thank you for this. i’ve been drawing for 7 months now and it’s gotten to a point i feel like i’m just a printer and not really an artist. i started drawing from imagination recently and it’s so much fun especially since i don’t have to bother gathering a ton of reference before actually getting to drawing. i didn’t know if trying to draw from imagination was going to hurt me since so many big artist say u need to use references or else u won’t learn. but i found drawing from imagination forces me to think how things would work in the real world and how that would look like. this approach to art is so much more liberating

Constructive drawing and perspective drawing is key. It’s true that references will help us learn, but not if we are copying it. If I draw from reference, I like to see if I can change the perspective of the subject, or even change the lighting scenario sometimes

BTW your drawing style very inspiring, it looks like you are sculpting not drawing. Amazing!!

Thank you! It is a bit like sculpting, I keep chipping away at it until I find the image I want

just the other day i felt an impulse to just express and create something on a blank piece of paper and i felt that i just cant do it and i cant look at what came out. I got into drawing because i wanted to draw portraits of people, but now i want to draw from imagination more than anything. I can only imagine how liberating it must be

I felt the exact same way 4 years ago. I couldn’t get the image in my head on paper. Start with basic perspective, 2 point perspective I think is best. Start with the basic shapes (cubes, spheres, still life etc.) I think architecture sketching is also a good skill to develop. And Scott Robertson’s “How to Draw” is a great entry into constructive drawing. I hope some of this can help guide you a bit more

I feel like copying references is good to get some fundamental skills and confidence. then you can go on to designing if you feel like you're ready for it.
