Star Trek DS9 is Star Trek at its best. The show, controversial when it first released, is still a show that creates opposition in the Trekkie fanbase. It's heavy war themes, dark suggestive material and violence is a far cry from the show Gene Roddenberry envisioned. However, DS9 is a fantastic show, with deep material, wonderful characters and quality production value. Check it out!

But there were some gems in those two seasons..set precedent for the whole series(introduced the Dominion, the character dynamic, and brought in the Defiant, the 2nd one anyway, lol). DS9 crept up on me kinda late in the day! I tried to watch it regularly when it came on air for the 1st time but, after TNG, I simply couldn't get into it... All this 'boring' talk about war, the Cardasian Occupation and tensions in the newly formed Bajoran Government... Oh... And although I was pumped for it, those wormhole aliens didn't provide anything compelling at the time... Now... Forward a decade or two.. And someone introduces me to the Dominion War! Sisko had a bad ass ship (and a kool shaved head!) and I was sold! I've watched the entire series, back to back, at least 2, maybe 3 times! And yes, it's the Best Star Trek series by far!!! But, it's not for everybody... But, thanks to the success of DS9, we had the, at the time, seemingly compelling Babylon 5, which was in direct competition... And then of course... Perhaps the best sci fi show ever to hit television: The re-imagined Battle Star Galatica... So... We owe a LOT to this show! It definitely shock things up when it came down to 'darker' sci fi themes and this trend is only going to continue...

When news of my own father passing came I took it calmly. I had to travel from Canada to Costa Rica to see him and return with his ashes. After 2 weeks of having to deal with Embassy's, customs and various other competing problems I finally was back at my home with some free time. I recalled this episode from my teen years and so I found it and had my wife sit and watch it with me. I was finally able to cry. Jake's pain was my own, and everything he had done in that episode resonated. It was wonderfully written, and probably the only show that can crush me.

Yepp. I like to think of it this way: Picard's Enterprise is the "head" and "heart" of the Federation, she represents the ideals of the Federation, with her crew being the best of the best and as the fleet's flagship that crew's very close to the most important people and events in the Federation. Deep Space Nine shows the Federation's... bowels. The characters are thrown into turmoil, things are chaotic a lot of the time, everything's makeshift and ad hoc... it's not ideal, it's not pretty... yet you can't live without your bowels, can you?

Ds9 was my absolute favorite. I've watched every tv series episode of each iteration of ST, all movies (and own), comics, and books. I'm a Trek fan over Star Wars. And ds9 is my favorite. I've watched the entire series, on repeat (yes, repeatedly watching all 7 seasons immediately starting over once 7 was finished), and I love this iteration of ST the most. "In The Pale Moonlight" was my favorite episode. It is the epitome of reflecting the difference of ds9 of TNG. I liked the idea that Roddenberry used ST in the 60s to show an idyllic universe to use as a mirror to real life and show how far we need to go and improve. I believe TNG also needed to continue that as in the late 80s we still had far to go. When ds9 came out, the world had "grown up" significantly since the 60s and ds9 could start to show the ST universe in a more realistic manner. Not everyone holds hands in season one. We got to see characters grow and evolve, this is especially true for Nog. That's what I didn't like about TOS and TNG. The character growth and evolution of both of those isn't as markedly noticable as it is in ds9, even Worf grew more in 3 seasons of ds9 than the character ever did in all of TNG. I love this series. And now I'm gonna watch "In the pale moonlight" after which start the whole thing over again

All older star trek shows are great, but DS9 to me is my favorite star trek series. The ending of "in the pale moonlight" still sends shivers down my spine. TNG showed us a mature federation and it's ideals at it's best. DS9 showed us the federation and what happens when it's principles cause conflict, and what happens when the federation comes under serious threat. Someone somewhere on youtube probably already said it and i just remembered it... ;) That's what i like about older star trek. It made you think, and every time you rewatch the show, you discover new things. Or some episode makes you think about current events, or about something that happened this week. Or it just simply gives you a moral dilemma to ponder (again). And this is what i sorely miss in STD. It is just so dumbed down, STD blatantly preaches instead of making you think, and often the moral lessons shown in STD are dubious at best, and sometimes even just morally wrong. The short trek "the trouble with edward" being a prime example: Someone difficult to work with? Just ignore them, try and ship them off, and if something goes wrong, don't even try and help them even if you are the captain responsible for this man... It is just morally wrong and not star trek at all. AND it is diametrically opposed to how for example barcley was handled in TNG! Barclay was included in the crew, picard ordered the crew to look for sollutions and ordered them to work with him. And in the end he became a valuable member of the crew. In STD a difficult personality is ignored and eventually left to die.

Johan Wittens Yeah I saw a video on that very subject about the new ST. I’ll watch the 300+ hours of DS9 and Voyager instead. STNG stands out in sci-fi in a brilliant way in that it wasn’t dystopian. Almost ALL the rest of sci-fi is dystopian to the point that it feels lazy. I thought DS9 was doing the same thing, taking the easy route. So much drama comes from war and conflict that it’s actually easy to draw the audience in (especially the shallow ones). What you said above made me see it in a new light. What if all the standards I love about ST is put to a logical and fair challenge? I love that idea. The show is pretty corny sometimes but I think it’s worth diving into.

@@pigpiggypigbigpig681 dystopian can be great, but it is a common trope yes. That's what attracted me in TNG too, this idea that if people worked together, humanity could be so much more and could achieve so much. TNG is a world I wanted to live in as a kid and teen. I love the expanse too though. That to me isn't so much dystopian, but more of a gritty realistic look at what our future in space might look like...

Yes, that's a very good point. Even Gene Roddenberry wanted to predict a true Utopia society for humanity, which basically is happening in Star Trek, in all of them, but it is never said that all alien races are alike and that it would be a natural thing for the Federation to get enemies. Alien species who simply don't like the Federation or where it stands for, or see it as a price to get, or simply just another target to obtain (for example by the Borg). So this leads to conflict and DS9 reflects in very well way how Utopia deals with Conflict. It's not even far from the real world. You and me, who are watching this video right now, we are 'wonderful people' as long our electricity is working, we have food in the fridge, we have clear drinking water and peace around us. Take all that away, and what would we be like? That statement of Quark was 100% true, the only little flaw in his statement was that actually this situation counts for most civilized species, not only to humans.

I am a huge Star trek fan, and have watched every series with the exception of the newest CBS all access shows. I was rewatching DS9, and my two roommates, who had never seen Star Trek at all, got totally hooked on it. This kind of surprised me, that someone who didnt understand phasers, the federation, transporters, warp engines, tricorders,or any Star trek tropes could be totally fascinated and engaged by the premise of ds9. I took a moment to explain to them the basics of the Star trek universe the best I could without boring them with too many details, and although I'm sure they appreciated having some context, they mostly just wanted to watch the show. They finished the entire series in under two weeks. They loved it. Now, keep in mind, these are two people with quite a bit of familiarity with shows that have sci-fi or fantasy elements. They watch quite a bit of anime, as well as American television, so the show was quite easy for them too pick up. They were never confused by how certain things worked, such as holosuites or impulse drive vs. warp engines. They were able to catch on quite quickly. It was the characters on the show that really hooked them. One was completely fascinated by the ferengi, and loved all the quark episodes and especially the Grand Nagus. The other loved the Bajoran/Cardasian conflict, and characters like Dukat and Kira. We all agreed that Bashir and Garak were initially supposed to be gay coded characters, lol. My point is, DS9 is still finding a new audience. That says a lot about its strengths as a show. Old school Trekkies might prefer TNG to DS9, but I think DS9 holds up to modern sensibilities, and will keep finding new viewers as the years pass.

Which is why I believe to appreciate DS9 you've got to watch at least TNG and probably TOS as well, plus Star Trek 6. You've got to know where Star Trek came from to understand how it ends. I have such fond memories of watching Deep Space Nine as a boy growing up in the 90's. I love Star Trek but DS9 always had a special place for me. I think Gene Roddenberry would have been supportive of DS9 - he was in the Navy in WW2 and even if he hoped for a peaceful future i don't think he was a pacifist or saw the world in black and white. DS9's greatest strengths are not only its serialised story telling but also its ensemble cast. Some of the greatest characters are only recurring - such as Garak, Dukat and Damar.

I don't know about that. Maybe the Roddenberry that created the Original Series would have liked it, but by the time of TNG he seemed very controlling. He bought his own hype about being the visionary of a utopian future and developed a lot of very specific ideas about what did and didn't belong in Trek. I can't imagine the same Roddenberry who said that Federation officers wouldn't even argue with each other being able to sign off on an episode where a Starfleet captain has several people assassinated. Maybe if he saw the whole arc of where the series was going. But if he was alive during its production I bet he would have protested a lot.

What I loved about DS9 was that it took what we already knew: the post-scarcity utopia of the Federation - and showed us how it collides with the various other polities at the edges of its territory where its power, laws and regulations are weakest. It's not that the message of a higher purpose and enlightened humanity is ignored or discarded, it just shows that even a less uncivilized humanity that, in general, strives for higher ideals and goals still has to deal with reality as it is. In the real world, you have to deal with others coveting what you have and with the consequences of your decisions for the greater good where they conflict with the laws of other species that decided differently. It's the other side of the same coin of Star Trek: we've seen one of the most optimistic and upbeat visions of what humanity could be like in the far future and DS9 showed us what it might cost. It shows the struggle that Federation fleet personnel goes through every day on the frontiers to keep that utopia alive and kicking where previous shows focussed more on what is BEYOND those borders, in uncharted territory.

My favorite aspect of DS9 is how we got to see the Federation viewed from the eyes of aliens who aren't apart of their actual organization. From their allies like the Bajorans and Klingons, to neutral, morally grey characters like Quark and Garak, to full on enemies like Dukat and the Dominion. This perspective helped widen our view of the Federation, in how they are ultimately good, but are as flawed as any other power. They cut freedoms when infiltrated by changelings, would not support the Maquis, and the revelation of Section 31's existence completely changed our notions of how noble Starfleet really is. All of this led to more interesting and nuanced storytelling from the DS9 team.

DS9 also showed that the Federation was the cleanest shirt in the room: the Romulans were conniving and militaristic, the Klingons were a corrupt society wanting war and glory, the Cardassians had an oppressive society and imperialistic mindset, the Breen were ruthless, the Ferengi were greedy and underhanded, while the Dominion were the tyrants of the Gamma Quadrant and perhaps as bad as the Borg. So yeah the Federation had some dubious elements to it: playing politics with allies and adversaries to keep the peace, Section 31's activities to covertly neutralize threats and a covertly sanctioned genocide of the Founders who quite frankly had it coming with their totalitarian, genocidal methods.

I think I sorta disliked the angle of approaching the episode from Sisko's personal log recording. It felt a bit heavy-handed to me although it did give insight into the way Sisko's mind worked (which I always thought was kinda lacking in DS9 compared to, say, Picard's inner conflicts in TNG). Yet I think I would have preferred it if it wasn't told in the format so that we might even start really questioning Sisko's actions more and maybe even have periods where we question if he's actually a decent man or a villain. The personal log format made it too easy to empathize with his actions and thought processes the entire way IMO and kind of spoiled the moral dilemma to me right from the beginning. You know, like show vs. tell. The episode felt more like "telling" to me than "showing".

Deep Space Nine is my absolute favorite Star Trek Show..PERIOD..It was and still is just plain awesome..When it comes to Discovery..I absolutely hate it..I watched the first season and thought it so so. Then came the second season. I gave it a chance and hoped it would get better. Then they brought in Section 31 who were established on DS9. They were a deep cover organization that no one had heard of. When they bring them to Discovery, everyone knows all about them and I was like..WHAT!!!!???? That's when I said, oh hell no!!!! I will never watch another episode of that crap again. I also have no faith at all with future Trek shows coming, including the Picard show. I'll give it a chance, but I'm not hopeful. If I want to watch great Trek, I will always go to what came before, especially DS9. Great review, thank you. And just have to say, rest in peace Aron Eisenberg. I still can't believe he's gone.

If I'm not mistaken, Section 31 played a part in Enterprise. And why wouldn't it? DS9 established Section 31 dated back all the way to the beginning of the Federation. It only makes sense that a shady organization would get more secretive and "lost to time" as time goes by.

You won't be disappointed. It gets better as the show progresses. It isn't without it's issues, like the religious concepts. However, watching the characters desperation and the battle sequences more than make up for it.

I believe that Star Trek: Voyager series was a meld of both Star Trek: TNG and Star Trek: DS9, which combined the exploration aspect of TNG, and the DS9 seasonal arc storytelling and the ongoing war aspect with the Borg (DS9 was the war with the Dominion). All three of the series mentioned are in my mind the best Star Trek shows ever made. Never truly watched the OG series, and did not finish the Enterprise series. Still haven't watched the new CBS All Access series Discovery yet.

Oh also later enterprise seasons (before it was cancelled) are actually pretty great. Earlier seasons aren't quite as good, but there are some outliers. Most season 4 episodes are very well written and def worth a watch. Also please just skip the last episode. It's an embarrasment and you'd be better off without even knowing the plot.

The sequentiallity of DS9 was just ahead of its time. Most people had to watch when it was "on air" and binging wasnt really an option. It´s the reason why the show has been so underrated until recently, imho.

The thing I like about DS9 is that almost all the characters start out cynical or broken. The series is punctuated with adversity, it is often those character flaws that make them best suited for the job of overcoming those challenges. Gradually in surmounting their traumatic pasts they become a more integrated and coherent group. Forging a better world in the crucible of conflict and loss as it were.

To be fair TNG did have certain story-threads that needed to be seen in order, like the Borg or Lore (as in Data's brother) episodes, but those were few and far between. Certainly nothing even approaching DS9's story threads. I too think that DS9 is the best of all the Star Trek series... in no small part thanks to all the stuff in which it was.... inspired by Babylon 5. Speaking of Babylon 5, I think that would be a good candidate for Lost and Found as well in it's own right.

We lost two that year. Who could have seen that coming? In 2018 they were all happy and healthy at the DS9 reunion. It was season 4 that hooked me. And it was the conflict. I always wished for ship to ship combat in TNG. It was rare and always left you wanting more.

@BlazingOwnager
@BlazingOwnager 4 жыл бұрын
@@Zimionz Yep. I have a soft spot for 'Move Along Home' but that was the only really 'bad' episode in Season 1, and even that had some good elements to it. The one thing I will say is the episodes for season 1 - 2 often felt like they were (and often were) recycled TNG plots, just swapping 'We run into an alien' for 'Alien runs into us.' That drops off pretty fast into the 2nd season and there's a TON of great DS9 specific episodes, but I think it's one of the reasons it gets a bad wrap. Like the Tosk episode could have easily been totally a TNG one, even though it was still really fun and good. All in all watch it start to finish. They pay so much off from season 1. DS9 unlike Moor's later work on BSG asked LOTS of questions.. then actually answered them over the show.

I was already a huge STNG fan and DS9 came out when I about 12. It aired at 9pm on Wed nights in Milwaukee and was one of the very few shows my parents would allow me to watch on a school night. Needless to say I absolutely loved it. Ive watched the series from beginning to end twice, once in the 90s and once in the 2010s. It holds up incredibly well… I guess its time to watch it again💙 Thanks for the great video!
