From a business productivity standpoint, absolutely yes, editing is a time drain. From a 'makers' standpoint, sub-contracting parts of the creation is like hiring a ghost writer to write your book. There is something special about creating the whole thing, painting the entire painting not just the finishing touches. Editing also lights up my day to day life, and my first 1-2hours of the day being absorbed in something I really enjoy feels awesome. That doesn't mean I'll never change that, but it's something to consider if editing is enjoyable to you

Spot on Ed! I hired 4 college students full time in the Philippines and we talk exclusively through Discord. They do amazing work and cost less than 1 entry level person in the US. Aptitude is global if you'll choose to find it and invest the time and processes.
@davetriesthis
@davetriesthis 7 ай бұрын
Was this through Fiverr? I find a lot of great creators in the Philipines. I hired a news writer when I was the editor of the magazine, and at first i felt really bad outsourcing to something less expensive. But we'd offer news writing jobs to US people and the pay was just not worth it for them. Editors ended up writing the news. Then I found a great writer in the Philipines and the amount we could pay them was the highest any client was paying them. It was a win all around but I felt bad for a long time.
@brianporter2806
@brianporter2806 7 ай бұрын
@@davetriesthis No, I found them all direct. Once you find one great resource, they typically have friends that can do the same. There are job boards and ways to find people direct in the Philippines. I was looking more for aptitude and personality and trained them on skills, rather than the other way around. I pay them all directly using Wise, so no middle man to take a cut. I even sent them money to buy high end desktops they can buy locally for video editing. It's more of an investment, but if you find good people and treat them well, it's amazing how it can be a win win for everyone! Let me tell you this, I've never once ever questioned their work ethic, whether they will show up for work, or their ability to do the task. If there's a drop in delivery, it's usually because I wasn't clear enough in my communication. Even though I can get on a zoom, I choose to put everything in screenshot tutorial videos and type on discord so it's all documented and they can consume it at their own pace and have reference materials. It works amazingly well.

Thanks, Ed. This was a great video. And great point about the story heavy videos! I’d love to find an editor. My problem is that I am working on news related content that is often extremely time sensitive. I film on a Thursday for a Friday upload. This means getting all sorts of news material together very quickly. This can’t be easily outsourced to an editor unless they are really copied up on news as well. I’ve got most of my editing down to a routine, but the one bit that is now most time consuming is the one thing that I really need to do and can’t easily be put out to an editor.

@@creator-booth Unfortunately, the easy bit is the main cut. (By the way, have you checked out Gling? It is fantastic. I’m also using the Elgato prompter. Both have really improved my workflow.) I can actually get the base of the video done in an hour or so. It’s finding and adding the b-roll that’s really time consuming. It has ti be very specific to my video. But that’s what levelled up my videos and saw my channel grow. I was taught all about that several years ago by this bloke called Ed from something called Film Booth! 🙏🏻😀

Hey Ed love the video. I am in no position to hire an editor but i know for sure now it will be my first thing i do when I can start generating income on youtube so I can focus more on the story and impact of my videos. I was wondering if you know anywhere where I could get honest constructive criticism about my videos so I can grow as a creator. Let me know if you have any suggestions. Regardless, thanks for the video!

every creator is unique, you have to try out different style on how you communicate your value to others. Like Ed, he is on the edutainment style on this video. Educating while entertaining us with the jelly bean analogy.

I get what you're trying to say. And I love most the videos on your channel both of them. But for me like you I do love editing. But also I don't make my living off KZbin yet. And I would rather edit for other people and myself then work a different job. So editing is a skill that you can be a freelancer for other people well gaining a skill to use for yourself. So yeah it makes sense for some people. But for people like me. It's like I'm either going to make money landscaping which is my other business or editing and then also saving money on the videos I make and also enjoy it. See what I'm saying. But yeah this video might get some more people paying for editors so... Hit me up... Lol ..

As an editor i agree with the point. There are a lot of red flag job descriptions. We would be more than willing to help you if you are the right person and treat us like actual humans instead of content machine.

Then there’s the artistry…. 🤔… so you’ll be poor if you focus on artistry and self expression over popular topics? There are way too many creators in the world for this advice…🤔

@@creator-booth I rewatched it when I saw your comment to see if I had missed something. As a Latina, I find your accent challenging to understand at times. But I think wanting to edit (which I think is what you mentioned) and editing as an art form or way of self expression are not the same from my perspective. Your old videos had a lot of bells and whistles that I agree might not have been necessary and totally get being exhausted. But they set you apart and a lot of times I was able to connect because of the feeling you portrayed. Like I’ll never forget your video in which you checked your phone every morning to see how your video was doing, and your struggle with that. I felt a human connection to that. As a viewer that’s my prefer form of consumption… things that make me feel. So as a creator, that’s what I also choose. I don’t want to let go of that as a way to grow or optimize my creating. And since I watch plenty of huge (mostly women) creators that have grown with a focus on emotional expression, I know it’s possible, I just wish I knew how. Unfortunately those creators don’t teach. Mostly men focused on talking head teach.
