Why Eggstra Work Is NOT Salmon Run - Splatoon 3

I think it focuses on another part of Salmon Run: teamwork and coordination. Overfishers for example have incredible teamwork and communication and can hit high egg scores on any type of run. They use strategies and manage their resources. This event is like a Salmon Run teamwork exercise

I really enjoyed having a second kind of Salmon Run. For me, the ideal would be that this mode is available all the time, and the scenario changes every two hours with the maps and modes to help prevent it from getting stale. If Nintendo had chosen to make it a mode with no badges attached, we might have seen less of a datamining frenzy as well.

It would be cool if it happened more often. But the major issue I see is that the scenarios need to either be created or chosen. More likely than not, the scenarios were still randomly generated, like Salmon run, prior to being chosen for the waves. So having a new Eggstra work every 2 hours might be a bit much. But I could see it being an event every weekend or something. I don't know what they would do for rewards though other than stickers or badges. Only time will tell.

@@splattuning Consider badge rewards like the weapon freshness in PvP: “collected X power orbs with a certain weapon”. “Completed five waves at 1.5x quota”. “Completed wave 5 at 300% hazard”. “Completed five waves at 2x quota”. Now there are badges to strive for without making it so that the badges display that you defeated a certain number of people, and therefore require that Nintendo engineer the rarity of the events. These dedication badges, rather than “merit” badges, would help encourage players to pursue their own achievements and objectives rather than defeat other players.

To me, the difference is Salmon Run infuriates me beyond belief 80% of the time while Eggstra work was only mildly annoying. Definitely apples to oranges there

I only found it enjoyable when I played with some of my very experienced friends. When I played with other people, it felt like actual salmon run since they couldnt keep up with the hazard level changing.

You're right in that regard. Once things go off the rails, it might as well be a random scenario.

If you don’t have a team you regularly play with using VC you’re wasting your time in this event. It’s like if they did a ranked version of splatfest for x rank players only.

I did pretty well solo but I won't do it again past the capsules because I thought there would be more rewards.

I went solo & barely missed hitting 20%. But I didn’t feel compelled to play that much because without VC there was no hope of refining much beyond blind luck.

tbh despite getting top 5% in both big runs, i wasnt really interested in grinding eggstra work at all. part of what I love about salmon run is the game knowledge you need to adapt to all the random situations and knowing what you should be prioritising when. eggstra work to me felt more like memorizing times tables back in school and it just made it not very fun for me. it's a cool idea for a mode, but it's not for me.

If eggstra work isn't salmon run and salmon isn't based on getting the most eggs then how does overfishing work, overfishing is literally eggstra work but you need to do it mid game

It's just like a categorization issue. They had to call it salmon run based on the rules, but, when playing it, it's not salmon run at all.

This just seems like a weird way of splitting hairs. It's a different variation on the mode to add a new type of challenge to it, but does that really make it "not Salmon Run"? Makes about as much sense to me of saying that a 120 star speedrun "isn't Super Mario 64". It's worth noting that when Scenario Codes were first added to the game, the Overfishing community started to play around with hunting for good seeds and optimizing those seeds just for fun. So this style of play already existed a little while before Eggstra Work canonized it, much like how Overfishers were playing for high scores in S2 long before Big Run made it an explicit objective.

It's just a bit of fun about how categorization works. So yes. It is just splitting hairs. The other reason I made the video was that I saw people online saying they didn't think it was much fun. I think it's fun, but not as much as normal salmon run. So I just wanted to highlight the distinctions so that people who just say "it's not fun" have words for why they didn't like it.

So, one major flaw in this argument is that you can speedrun randomly generated content. People love to speedrun roguelites, which are often procedurally generated, and the only way to do that is to be prepared for as many possible scenarios as you can and adapt to what you see. Games that use procedural generation also often let you copy seeds and share them to experience the same version of the game more than once or share it with other players. No one argue that when you do this you aren't playing the same game anymore. It's it different from the standard version of the game? Yes, it's a different way to play it. But enough that it's not even the same game anymore? No not really, just an alternative way to play.

Well you can also still optimize salmon run even though it's random. That's more akin to what you're describing with randomizers. But Eggstra work is a predetermined scenario. So it's more in line with optimizing an exact scenario like typical campaign mode.
