That’s just a stupid statement. And I’m not even an England fan. But harry Kane is the best no. 9 in the world and Jude Bellingham may very well be the best player in the world currently. If Phil Foden is your 3rd best player, you have some talent at your disposal. You wouldn’t know any of that from the 2 matches they’ve played, but that’s not the players fault. Nothing like subbing on three runners, mere minutes after taking Alexander-Arnold off (England’s best long ball specialist) to show you where the real problem lies. England doesn’t have the most talented squad at the euros (top 3 probably) and they should have never been considered favorites. But to call their talent “not that good” is a cretinous opinion, expressed by a dangerously unlearned person. Aim higher. Much.

@@philfoster8789 you make a very fair point, which will be reflected by my measured response to you. And by contrast, it’ll highlight how little I thought of Alex’ point. In my view - and I’ve been wrong on occasion - Alex deserved exactly the answer that he received, because his post - upon another review - was worse than cretinous. It was intellectually lazy and generic. KZbin is *littered* with posts just like his. These people fall in one of two categories: 1) they genuinely believe that this England team - which includes England’s all time leading scorer, a multi-golden shoe winner in multiple top 3 leagues, multiple champions league winners, a player who may very well be simultaneously the best player in the world and the best young player in the world, etc - isn’t talented. These people are dangerously stupid and it’s our collective duty to check their ridiculous opinions periodically. Or 2) people who don’t believe #1, but are just trolling. I find these people even more tiresome. While your point is a good one - and well made - upon another review Alex strikes me as a person who’s exhibited no redeeming qualities in the short time we’ve known him. Stated differently, his opinion is so bad, it *has* to reflect on his character. All the best.

Here, and everything this guy said about England's failure to win the Euro is 1000% accurate, lack of unity and discipline is one of the vital aspects of building a team and winning trophies, 1966 was their only year when they actually played like a complete team and even then refs ruined it kinda, what Southgate needs is to develop his coaching philosophy, that's how one grows, what he has looks good on paper but never actually implemented it when you really think about it. Managers like Pep, Xabi Alonso and other managers/coaches who aren't English know that you have to adapt your style of play otherwise you won't win any trophies, club or international, especially given that football is changing rapidly, another example is Turkey in 2021(2020 Euro) the coach had a good tactic that he could've used to win the whole tournament and can beat anyone with hell even go on a long winning streak like Colombia but the problem is that the coach simply didn't put that philosophy into action and which resulted in them losing all their games in the group stage. Bottom line, you have to be willing to unite and let your coaching marinate so it can actually produce trophies otherwise overhyped players is all your gonna get.

Southgate has taken England to a level higher than anyone since 66, he has nullified the pressure on his players better than anyone and he has built a unified squad who want to play for each other. The trouble is that he is a defender with a risk averse mentality and hardly the best tactician in the world and under him this is the best the team can be. I would love to see him stay but step down to coach the things he excels at. Alongside him I would love to see Pep Guardiolla or someone of his stature and nouse taking charge of England. Then we would win something.

Italy were actually cursed in the tournament from when it became a real tournament with a good amount of teams to when they won it in 2021 which was by them having to be statistically the best team (despite a much harder route than runners-up England). But 1996 to 2016 Italy were the best team to not win any of those 6 tournaments. 2 finals, 1 of which they were about 20 seconds away from beating the WorldChampions (France) and it should've been 2-0 before France scored the very late equaliser but also Italy's goalkeeper Toldo had a great tournament but got his nose studded in that final. Italy had won their first 4 games and got the better of both hosts and knocked out the favourites&co-hosts Netherlands without conceding to them when Netherlands had scored 13 goals in the 4 games before playing Italy. 2 uniquely unlucky group stage exits which has basically no chance of happening in today's format. 1996 (a group with the 2 eventual finalists Germany & CzechRepublic, the latter Italy had a better record than but UEFA's rules allow a team who beat you however lucky it was to finish above you if you're on the same points regardless of the goal difference, CzechRepublic had worse GD in my book & Fifa's book that means they had a worse record it's as bad as having a point less UEFA disagree and because Czech beat 10 man Italy 2-1 they progressed just for that reason but had 2 worse results out of 3 than Italy. Plus Italy were the better team vs Germany and also missed a penalty which would've made them finish top of the group let alone qualify) & 2004 it's extremely rare to be eliminated from a group where you get a win and 2 draws with zero defeats. The 2 eventual finalists that year would've massively struggled a lot vs Italy had either of them had to face them. 2 shootout exits 2008 (vs Spain who dominated World football 2008 to 2012 the latter was Italy's other Euro's final defeat) & 2016 (vs Germany the reigning WorldChampions) Italy were better than the eventual winners of that competition (Portugal) it's just Italy kept having to play the best teams every round while Portugal avoided everyone (Italy, Spain, Belgium & Germany) and were still unconvincing.

They need to be able to beat big teams when it matters most. England have done well in recent tournaments because they played teams that were not that good or not as good as they use to be like Germany in the last Euro or teams at the level of Colombia or Senegal. I do think England will do well this Euro hopping they win cause I'm English and I've never seen England win a single tournament in my lifetime. I also do believe that luck wasn't on our side in crucial moments like the last Euro or World cup. They need to be able to beat the big teams without going to penalties or even Extra time for that matter. Look at Argentina for example they scrapped by and suffered to win a world cup even with Messi and all they’re talented players. However in crucial moments Messi stepped up , Martinez rose to the occasion or the other players raised they’re game.

Well, it is a mixture of many things. Spanish football was in a similar position a few decades ago; when LaLiga was the "Star's League". We were the best league, but the national team always failed. Spanish players were not used to be the main protagonist of the teams; formation was not the keystone of every team; we were the richest ones; so, it was unnecessary to seize and develop a really strong tactician and player formation system. We did not export players on that time; so, our players were less competitive and able to adapt to different kinds of styles. In addition, Spanish football started a formative revolution during the 90s (not just in La Masia). On national team and club level. Less physicality and more understanding of the game and technical training. This kind of making things started on England just a decade ago. When the economic crisis arrived to LaLiga, we were forced to seize our football schools, export players and harvest the previous job done by national football federation. It took decades. That's similar in countries like France or Portugal, where there's a huge national football formation network (very young taleted players like Mbappe or Tchouameni were selected to be trained on national team academy when they were youngsters searching for a team). English football was very coarse and isolated of the ultimate football revolutions until premier league (mainly the Sacchi and Cruyff innovations), further more after the europe's ban from competitions in 1985, and started to be important and modernized on the late 2000s. You began to implement football formation like in Spain or France even lately. Now you have started to produce modern players instead of English players; but there's a lack of modern national coaches with its own ideas. It will take time cause you need coaches that experienced and developed modern football mentality instead of the old English one. At the end, modern English football is still in its infancy; like I said, just a few years ago Premier League wasn't even as professional as other leagues; first Spanish players that arrived to PR talked about the lack of structure and method inside clubs during 2000s. I even remember Malouda talking about the lack of the minimum tactical knowledge of English players when he arrived to Chelsea. Players like Phoden, Bellingham, Grealish or Saka are starting to show how can be national english football in a few years. You are doing well, but takes time!

I think the difference is the British are quite a sociable as we love or pubs and social clubs compared to other nations. I love how the Germans see taking a penalty as a great honour where with the English we’re petrified that we’ll end up in a Pizza Hut commercial. Plus we have very good players but also our education system crushes any trace of individuality out of people that’s why we end with bland leaders like Sunak , Starmer and Southgate. Come on England! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Thank you, very interesting. I was too young alas to remember the 1966 world cup. But as an 8 yr old fanatic, I remember all too clearly the horror of the 1970 qtr final defeat to W Germany, after being 2-0 up on 70 minutes. It remains the single most painful for me all these years later, and perhaps was the baseline for the next 50 years. On your point about club rivalries impeding the national effort: the FA realised there was some sort of underlying malaise by the mid to late 70s. In this period, Liverpool - then populated mainly by English players, Emlyn Hughes et al - were dominant at home and in Europe. We experimented for a shorth while by cramming the national team with Liverpool players, But this was soon abandoned.

Hello, my friend, seems we are roughly of the same age. Sorry, a German speaking here. The Wembley final in 1966 was the very first most important football match I ever watched at the age of 8. It was quite exciting, abeit I barely understood what it was all about and what it really meant. After the match we, the boys of the block re-played the game between some garages with a tennisball, haha. And, yes, the 3:2 in the heat of Mexico has always been a highlight for us, but even more important was the 3:4 defeat against Italy in the semi-finals. I think the first German victory a t a l l against England was a 1:0 in 1968 in a friendly in Hannover. Until then Eng vs. Ger normally ended 8:3, 5:1 or 6:2 if not even worse ( from the Ger perspective). From the Mexico WC on you could have called me a football fanatic too. After the Italy-Brazil final I calmed down significantly, we wouldnt stand a chance against Brazil, no doubt about it. Anyway, after all those years and decades the question remains why England actually didnt win a single trophy that counts. You can find many answers here or in discussions of the leading football pundits. I have to admit, I dont know. Three years ago I thought, well, they‘ve beaten us in Wembley which will set free enough energy to finally win the EC cup. I didnt doubt that for a second. But you know, we suffered a lot from the Italiens and they were always at their best when all odds were seemingly against them. So, terribly enough for England the unexpected actually happened. In my opinion, and that may surprise you, the German team will not go to the semi-finals this year. German football is seriously damaged since 2018 and at best recovery has only begun recently. England? In all honesty, I would like to see the EC, or even better, the WC trophy in the hands of your captain, believe it or not. But in my sixties now I think Football‘s just a game and life will go on, with or without the trophy in our hands.

In my opinion, the winning of a future title is a matter of hard work and not only in terms of football, even more so in working on the mental chip. Spain started becoming successful in foitball after having scrapped the nickname of "La Furia Roja". Defining themselves as furiuos was counterproductive because fury makes you lose control. The English team, public and media need to get rid of their stubbornness and entitlement of wanting to "bring back home "their" football trophies". If they don't get more humble in their approach, they very likely won't win anything if it's not a matter of luck.

There are a few reasons why England underachieve that i think are not looked at here. 1. Training/ coaching. England players are coached to play a role for their clubs. They are generally one-footed, not technical enough and unable to play even slightly different roles, causing incompatibility with other similar players in the team. The dirth of players who could use their left foot unbalanced the team. For professional players this is embarrassing. 2. Not enough English managers leaving innovation absent from England academies and a lack of respect to England managers from players who have typically achieved a lot more than the manager. No English manager has ever won the EPL. Only 2 English managers have ever beaten a Guardiola side. Depending on your definition there are only 4-6 English managers in top Leagues in Europe. Almost more Danish or Austrian managers which on a per capita basis is ridiculous. 3. This is more nuanced, but since WW1 there has been a split in English schools when it comes to sport. Posh, or at least aspirational schools, played Rugby and Cricket. Other schools played football. I think this has lead to a lack of 'academic rigour' around the thinking/ creative positions in the formative years for English players who can be coached into behaviours but might not know the why, or the theory around positional play. We always seem to have physically gifted players but not the creatives and seem distrustful of them. The answers to 1 is academy programme implementation guidelines from FA. St George's park will help train flexible England style and develop genuine 2 footed players. 2. Should be FA support for coaching programmes, bursaries and outreach. Try to keep successful ex-players within the game rather than pundits. 3. Is schools outreach and training/ coaching overhaul. Gradually things will get better, but its a pyramid. With more managers there are more likely to be a successful candidate with more technical players they are more likely to be tactically flexible etc

Using the term "Golden generation" while speaking about English media hype for the players is nothing short of insane. All these players shine in their clubs but it's not them carrying the clubs, it's players from other countries. Even a managerial heavyweight like Fabio Capello couldn't get them to a semifinal. And let's not forget that national teams from other countries back then were also stacked with quality players. It's not like England were a team of superstars and other countries could just pick nobodies. The vast majority of English players are by far not as good as they are made to believe by the media. And then there is the mentality and England clearly lacks the right mentality. What do you think happens in Italy, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Netherlands and France if their national teams play poorly? They are also being heavily criticized but they don't moan and whine about that and instead they put effort into bouncing back and often enough they succeed. On a side note I want to come back to the term "Golden generation". This term is usually being used by countries that have won little or nothing and at some point have an exceptional collection of players that might do something meaningful. Bulgaria and Romania mid 90s were examples, Portugal around the 2000s with Figo and Rui Costa, Czech Republic or Belgium in recent years. England is the only World Cup winning country that uses such a term. No other current or former World Champion does that. Maybe that's a hint that people might hope but do not actually believe.

Living up to their potential? You must mean living up to the potential the English press and pundits tell them they have. Best league in the world? Yes, probably, but only because their massive television money windfall is spent on top foreign players and managers. This in turn is the reason why the said clubs have no room in their top teams to bring youth through - which in turn is why England has so many good/okay (but hardly world class) players. But they are good at sideways and backwards passing AND their goalkeeper is brilliant at long boots up the park (and giving the ball away). To be fair, their top players play well for their clubs because they have top players around them (and are coached by good foreign managers), but playing for England they only have other mediocre players to play with.

At least a team should make it to semifinals regularly and finals occasionally to be considered a favourite. But England? Two finals in major tournaments, one in the stone ages and one three years ago. Just to give it a bit of context: since Englands one and only win Uruguay has won five tournaments.

Graham Taylor was correct. I always thought England should play the way we play in the league. If we had done that in the 70's and 80's, other nations wouldnt have been able to live with us.

We did play the way we did in the league, which is why we didn't do anything in the 70's. English football was dominated by the easy ball and the high cross. The easy ball, played to an un-marked player is the way that many English teams built up their attacks towards goal. But invariably the final pass into the penalty area was a high one. At international level the players must be able to play the difficult ball - up to a front player who is tightly marked - and develop a move from there. And the final penetrating pass into the penalty area has to go into feet. This is completely contrary to the way the game was played in England then.

@@Ruda-n4h ‘final penetrating ball must go to feet in the penalty area’ that is complete nonsense, why does it ? So all international goals are scored that way the then?
