Manchester United have reached an agreement with Atalanta for the signing of forward Rasmus Højlund in a deal worth €75million plus €10million. Erik ten Hag needed a striker in the summer transfer window and were heavily linked with Harry Kane. With far less elite level experience, why is Højlund the man ten Hag wanted?
Join host Ayo Akinwolere, football writer Carl Anka and football reporter Adam Crafton as they discuss what strengths Erik Ten Hag sees in Hojlund.

I don’t agree with anyone who has written off Antony. He may not have reached 100 mill levels yet, but the team plays 2x better with him on the right than anyone else at the moment. He works on his end product and we have a gem on our hands.

@samwize28 I can see the similarity to Robben honestly. It is true, if he works on his finishing, he will be great as is. What I'm trying to say is, in this current state, he is too easy to read without a right foot. I've seen plenty of games last season and in his Ajax days where the momentum stopped in its tracks simply because defenders cut him off going inside just outside the box. He only needs a half-decent right foot delivery to the box to make defenders think twice about cutting him off going inside, which will open more opportunities for the team. P.S. Speaking of being deadly going inside from the right, I'd love to see teams get stressed about thinking which of Antony and G*****ood will start on that side.
@jeffgumawid7554
@jeffgumawid7554 Жыл бұрын
@samwize28 Well Robben made it so that you know where he will go but you can't stop him from going there. Antony ain't there quite yet, but yes that is one avenue he could improve on. If he goes on and does that, it would be great. I'm not even suggesting for him to go two-footed. I'm saying just a semblance of a threat from the right and it will add a new dimension to his game and the lineup's dynamics in general. Apologies for the last part. Yeah I was excited for his rise too, but yeah that is why I dont spell out his name anymore. But it looks like ETH wants him back and I reckon he can whip him up back on track at least on the pitch.

Wayne Rooney scored only 15 goals (ish) in 67 1st team appearances for Everton before United bought him... Far from prolific but sometimes you just have to roll the dice on the obvious trajectory of talent. Northern European players always settle really well in the UK as well due to language, culture and climate, whereas Iberian and S.American players always seem to have a dream of playing in Spain, and those teams eventually come knocking if they do well. I think it's quite a safe gamble. We all know prices are insane, but if he's got the qualities ETH wants, I'm confident he'll grow into a good player in the next few years.

Not sure about the 20 goals in all competitions. People talk about what he accomplished in the Italian league. Before moving to Atalanta he still played 5 games for the Austrian league and 1 cup game landing 5 goals and 3 assists in total. The level isn't the same when compared to the Italian or Premier League. But that is still a total of 16 goals and 7 assists in all domestic competitions last season. I think Hojland has had good preparation for Premier League football, as since he was a young boy, his dad who was a footballer, and his brother, who plays for Copenhagen, built a football gym in their basement. Like the gentleman first said, Hojland is a good allrounder striker. With ETH and his proven record already, on bringing the best of out of some players like AWB, Shaw, Garnacho, Mainoo, Rashford, he would have a good chance of doing the same with Hojland. It’s a good time to be a man United fan, as we’ve seen some good progress, and a lot of changes that ETH has made, and the decision he has made, has been spot on. Especially on how he deals with players of all levels, CR7, Rashford lateness, Garnacho. It’s just a shame that Maguire lost all his confidence, otherwise he could have become a regular CB and have more place in the team. I’m looking forward to the season ahead.

The striker situation at Manchester United is not something ten hag is really concerned about. He’s more concerned about the team scoring goals than the individual getting the goals. I think Erik understands that’s the team needs to be more capable of creating goal scoring chances that’s why he’s more focused on how the team plays. Cause trust me a coach like ole would have gone all in for Kane even if it’s cost 120 (he payed a crazy amount of money for Maguire). So for Erik it’s more about trying to fix how the team plays football. Tell you what rashford will play as a 9 more than rasmus this season. Because Erik is not willing to just you no put him in the team straight away. He’s going to have to work to earn that starting position because rashford will score goals as a number 9 and trust garnacho is not joking this season. He really wants to play. So it’s all going to be really tricky and there’s going to be a step in the amount of goals from last season that’s for sure cause there’s so much more talent up front. Let’s not forget there is amad who is also going to play when he gets fit. I think it’s all going to be interesting to watch.

One thing that isn’t said much is about how the Højlund inclusion will benefit Antony’s overall game. As said early in this video, he wants to cut inside. Constantly. It’s obvious. While that worked for Robben for donkey’s years, the game has changed tactically since, I would say. A left-footed forward in Højlund’s profile is best suited for handling crosses coming from the right-hand side. If Antony needed any more encouragement to develop the ability to go on the outside as a viable option, it’s right there. Dalot is a willing overlap, Wan-Bissaka less so. Antony needs to add this to continue to grow as a more complete player. That it benefits the team more widely only adds to the urgency of that.

Could it be that Ten Hag views this as a transitional season, in which Hojland is introduced gradually into the rigours of playing Premier League Football? I can see a rotation of Martial, Rashford, Sancho and Hojland playing different roles upfront throughout the season. I hope Ten Hag is given enough time to cultivate this squad and to get them firing. Other managers have proven that time is good for a squad and for club culture.

Are the pundits having dementia, everyone is asking why we going for younger players, why we not signing proven world stars from other rival clubs. 1. we dont have the finances to pull it off 2. we actually did it with Casemiro, but having a lot of aging players is not a good strategy 3. We actually have done it a lot in the past, many of them didnt work out, including the famous ones like Alexis, Pogba, Di Maria etc.

ETH dont set the prices of players that's our poor negotiating Team, Antony would have cost around 30 million cheaper if they had just got there finger out and not chased Frankie de Jong for a transfer window even though he said multiple times he didn't want to leave Barcelona, so they waited and paid the end of Summer window tax.

I hope I'm wrong as a United fan, but I think this is just another example of *feeling* ten Hag knows what he's doing, but in reality an example that he doesn't. Hojlund looked extremely raw at a low pressure, middling Serie A side with really microscopic amounts of pressure compared to that at United. Hojlund is coming into a side that doesn't create hatfuls of chances - if it did, we wouldn't be so reliant on Rashford (who isn't really a striker) for about half our output. So an extremely raw "prospect" in front of 80,000 people, against far, far better defences than anything Serie A offers (he scored all of 9 goals in that format) in front of billions of eyes, with limited chance creation? Oh, and he apparently can't head the ball, so everything will need to be to feet. The gap between this picture and what £40m extra that probably secures Kane / Osimhen is absolutely vast. Even Osimhen would worry me, to be absolutely honest. We only have to look at the levels the likes of Lukaku / Abraham / Giroud appear capable of in Serie A, as compared with the Prem. There is a huge ocean between the two leagues. And that is a big ocean for one wide-eyed boy to carry on his shoulders. And by the way, Hojlund might have "3 seasons" to bed in (he doesn't), but does ten Hag? 🤨 This period in United's history reminds me a lot of Liverpool under Houllier and Benitez, when they were fairly freespending and optimistic, but the level of recruitment could never match that of what they were trying to catch.

Hojlund will have a much easier time of it if the rest of our attack can get 10-15 goals plus a season. Mount, Sancho, Anthony, Garnacho, Martial, Eriksen and hopefully Amad and Pellestri chipping in a few. If United can spread a few goals around the team and not just Rashford then the media wont care that Hojlund only gets 15.

When i was playing/ growing up watching football. Every strikers had complete skillset, near post back post diving headers first time shots. Sure they have their trademark finishes, inzaghi diving headers, crespo turn and finish, bierhoff back post headers, but they all can finish first time,score from near post and far post. Now how many in the world has those three essentials? Haaland doesnt, lukaku doesnt, lewandowski doesnt, etc Strikers talent are so much worse than it was 20 years ago. Haaland wouldnt start for inter when they had ronaldo, vieri, baggio, zamorano, martins, robbie keane and adriano on loan at fiorentina 🤣 he’s lucky he plays today he would have been playing for salernitana 25 years ago

This might be a silly thought but maybe we gambled that Kane will not sell now but may be available for a cheaper fee in December or on the free next summer and that This signing will get to bed in and learn with us to the end of Kanes peak if we got in in 6-12 months time...Kane has at best 2-3 seasons after this coming one at the top...Hojland can bed in and learn and we have.a great replacement or rotation olayer ready for then... Doubt we have the ability to do that FFP but we shall see...that would just be an epic game plan if that's what the gamble is here...or maybe the gamble is that Martial might actually get and stay fir for a season and then we have 2 options and can go for Kane on the free again next year...

@@dylancrosson7373 do you need to see more to see that we overpaid for Antony? He might turn out to be good but an honest person would admit that €100m was an overpay of epic proportions. Looking at what Hojlund has done it is obvious that it also is an overpay. I believe in being objective and calling a spade a spade but that is me. United are screwed in transfers not because we are a big wealthy club but because we are run incompetently and we have a reputation for incompetence. The guy negotiating the Hojlund sale previously sold us Maguire when he worked in the UK and he knew we would overpay again so he fleeced us.
