The day that I arrived in town to start my job straight out of college, I watched a group of old men play Euchre. I had absolutely no idea what was going on and absolutely no idea how important it was to the culture I had just moved into.

When my dad worked at a university as a janitor him and his coworkers would play euchre on their break so they had to be quick about it and he would call it janitor euchre.

I can't remember a time when I didn't know how to play. Euchre has been part of my family forever. My partner and I now play every week at a local brewery and it's the highlight of our week. We've made new friends and gotten to know people we never would have had we not been players

The cut to stone cold silence with your head in your hands realizing what you've gotten yourself into is comedic gold.

If it helps explain: a trick is a round of “high card wins”. 🙂

As a Canadian, seeing that bunch style of dealing makes my eyes bleed!

I agree that is kinda weird. Just about everyone I know in Ontario knows how to play euchre but we deal em one at a time.

As an Ontarian, Euchre is practically the official card game of the province. In my family, Euchre games break out at just about every get together ... even weddings. I haven't seen a game at a funeral, but really, it's just a matter of time. 😏♠️♥️♦️♣️

Yeah, it sounds like we played a pretty basic version of euchre in Zionsville during high school. My girlfriend and I my sophomore year were undefeated. And, we never meant to be, but we were pretty ruthless together... lol.

Had a good laugh at you thinking cards wouldn't be harder than ttgs. Modern design philosophy usually ensures you know which principles are going to be important, like, within the first hour, no matter what game you're playing; cards will keep even the faintest outline of what optimal play looks like hidden from you for years.

Modern games are intentionally designed so the rules encourage certain strategies/playstyles. Older games are designed with simple rules that give rise to emergent properties and strategies. Modern games are designed to have most of the player skill progression achieved within the first dozen plays because that’s as long as the average gamer will play it before moving on to the next hot game. Classic games will continue to be rewarding for years and it’s the reason they’re played to this day. If chess was designed today you would gain victory points for capturing pieces or forming pawn chains or controlling the center, and have other fundamental strategies given as objectives to be completed.
