How Europe is Flooded with Drugs | Lethal Cargo | ENDEVR Documentary from 2016
Episode 4: Drugs
We investigate how drug trafficking and distribution routes are changing and adapting to geopolitical changes in the Mediterranean basin.
Watch the full series here:
Episode 1 - Migrants: • The Shady Business of ...
Episode 2 - Toxic Waste: • How Toxic Waste Is Dum...
Episode 3 - Weapons: • The Harsh Truth About ...
The Mediterranean Sea is crisscrossed by traffics of every kind, some legal, others lethal. Over the last five years, we have been putting together the pieces of a tragic and terrifying story of the merchants of death. Lethal Cargo covers the escape of refugees from war regions in leaky boats, the spilling of toxic waste into the depths of the ocean during goods transportation and in our two most recent episodes, the illegal handling of drugs and weapon across the Mediterranean. Shockingly, the governments that should be trying to stem the tide of this illegal trades are the very ones involved in a tangled web of corruption!

A wise man, who's spent his entire career dealing with this on an international law enforcement level once said to me: "trying to stop the flow of drugs with law enforcement is like trying to empty a river with a bucket." I'll never forget how absolutely crushed he looked, staring into his beer and contemplating whether his life's work has actually been a total waste of time and if it had actually made things worse.

I'm so glad drugs have been illegal in my country for almost a hundred years and we've had a war on our own people for almost a hundred years also even the people that just want to use them and don't deal them and arent violent still you can't do that and you can be thrown in prison for that. But hey you want to smoke cigarettes and drink alcohol you can get as much legally as you can no problem. Wait till Europeans have to deal with fentanyl will be praying for actual heroin by that time. Remember America has only 4% of the world's population but yet and houses 25% of all the worlds prison population imagine how many of those people are nonviolent drug offenders. But nothing will change the War on Drugs will never change

The only option is the full legalisation. Up to about a century ago and before that, things like cocaine, morphine, amphetamine etc were all legal and freely available at the pharmacy. It didn't cause any problems because it was affordable, the purity was assured, and it could be supplied in known dosages. What does illegality lead to? A huge increase in the price of drugs, in fact the more demonised and banned drugs are the higher the prices, which instead of eradicating them only causes those dependent on them to resort to even more desperate measures and the suppliers and sellers to make even bigger profits. Because it's so lucrative organised crime ends ends up getting involved in it, who usually make the majority of their profits from the drug trade but then often also branch out into other things like arms trafficking, human trafficking, organ trafficking, extortion, and a whole slew of other things. We see all too well in the Netherlands that full legalisation is the only solution, right now coffeeshops are exempt from prosecution if they sell cannabis or hash up to a certain amount of grams per transaction and if they don't hold more than half a kilo of cannabis products in stock at any one time. However coffeeshops are not allowed to buy the cannabis products they sell, and there is no government licensing or legal exemption for those who grow cannabis, thus still leading to serious problems. Because in order to get their products coffeeshops have to resort to buying it illegally, and as a result the majority of the cannabis production is in the hands of organised crime. The production of cannabis is worth several billion €, and with so much money involved the criminals have become incredibly ruthless and violent, we've have too many assasinations to count because of it, and a very strong organised crime built on the multi-billion € cannabis production. If only the government would allow a licensing system, where cannabis growers can apply for a license to grow it, abiding by strict regulations, then it would cause much of the organised crime here to collapse. And if they did the same for hard drugs like cocaine, amphetamine and ecstacy, there really would be almost no organised crime left in this country, because currently they make a killing off of it, both literally and figuratively, with just the production and sale of synthetic drugs in the Netherlands already having a yearly value of 18 billion € on a population on not even 18 million people.

Drug trafficking is glamorized in movies as the endless source of money that requires no skills. It doesn't make sense to me. Those business models have to include, agriculture area, labs, markets, distributors and a large margin of consumers. It's dangerous, it's illegal, destroy consumers. How can they keep the income string when the business kills both, the distributor and the consumer? The glamour of the drug business must be a scam. It has to be sponsored. Once again meth heroïne and those type of chemical drugs are a different story and every city definitely has a couple aggresive junkies. Would research into psychedelics and application not solves these issues? We can look at the networks but we can all starve the source of the problem by expanding mental health but also provide access to certain drugs.

Mrs Richards: "I paid for a room with a view !" Basil: (pointing to the lovely view) "That is Torquay, Madam." Mrs Richards: "It's not good enough!" Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..." Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!" Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky." What’s the difference in drugs and alcohol. Can you imagine the money and resources these countries could redirect, if they’d just legalize them ALL. My grand mother always taught me, “People do what they like and they like what they do” with that being said if someone wants anything bad enough they’ll get it! If drugs are widely available like cigarettes and alcohol most people wouldn’t even really want them. Humans long for what they can’t have and once they have it they don’t want it.

I liken the '''war on drugs''' to the war on people smugglers. No one is forcing anyone at gun point, it's by choice, Where there are no buyers there will be no sellers. put all those billions on prevention, and rehabilitation, from school age, decriminalize the drugs, because when the addicts can't get the '''real'' stuff they concoct it themselves, give the drugs free to the addicts while slowly weaning them off it, that would put the cartels out of business
