Robert Alter’s “Five Books of Moses” is a very diligent translation that is uniquely esteemed by both conservative and progressive bible teachers. It also has a great commentary on each page that explains when there are features of the text that can’t be translated adequately. In this case, he translates Eve as a “sustainer” for Adam.

What you will find is that all translation is influenced by the "agenda" of the translator, whatever it may be. There are many modern versions of the bible, retranslated from Hebrew or Latin or Greek, many with comments on what the original text said and alternative meanings, but ultimately the translators are human. There will always be some reflection of them in the resulting product.

Therefore, the root ezer does not have the negative connotation that the word "helper" gives it.

The fall (sin) made men domineering and controlling which put women in a very bad situation, dependent, always pregnant, not physically able to defend herself and always vulnerable, and so the result of the sin of the fall was subordination yo man and circumstances, which fostered anger and resentment. Then Jesus came on the scene and brought change and redemption and a new order that made the family work well. A man should love his wife so much he would literally die for her, and she would love her husband so much that she would respect and honor him. Out of that mutual love, kids would be raised to see parents who sacrificed their own sin natures to serve the Lord which resulted in a peaceful and happy family, which once again, reflects the nature of God to a lost world. He brought us full circle.

WRONG: Hebrews 13:6 is preceded by 5 lines thst bacically put it into perspective . The take home is that if these 5 rules are followed THEN you can be confident to say that God will be pleased and will help you. Not that God is you "helper" as God's reason for existing. This helper is the way a parent helps a subordinate child in need. The parent in that case is in a dominant position and "helps" out of kindness to one who is less capable and therefore dependent.

It is often praised as one of the more accurate translations in to English of the original Hebrew and Greek text and it respectfully restores the divine name in all the original places where it was found in the Bible.

Ezer does not imply "subservience" at all. It means helper, but in the sense of a "strong ally", one who comes to assist or rescue. So, the woman was meant to be more than a simple helper. She was meant to be a steadfast ally, even to the point of rescuing him from his troubles. The idea implys commitment to his welfare, not her own.

Every command in the Bible towards women tells them to put themselves under the authority of their husbands, but never says they are less than their husbands. Husbands are to care for their wives as they care for their own bodies and wives are to submit themselves to their husbands.

It does not mean "any woman, whether married or unmarried", because "gyné" does not apply to a "single woman (an adult human female who is widowed or divorced or has never married)". The Greek-speaking original recipients of Paul's letters would never have thought of a single woman when they read/heard the word "gyné" (and the accusative, genitive and dative cases of "gyné), they all would have thought only of "a woman who is married to somebody (not necessarily the wife of the writer who wrote the word, but 'the wife of some man')". Remember: Paul makes reference to Adam & Eve. Adam and Eve were husband & wife, they were married to each other. That contextual fact confirms that "wife = married woman" is the correct English translation of "gyné". But the original Koiné Greek-speaking addressees in Corininth did not need that fact explained to them, they already knew, because they spoke in Greek every day. (Koiné means "common" = vernacular = everyday and not literary). Conclusion: this passage is about marriage, and about the relationship between a husband and his own wife. It is not about *societal* (non-martial, non-sexual) relationships between male and female people who are not married to each other (e.g. neighbours, fellowship, siblings, extended family, platonic friendship, co-education, colleagues, other business/professional relationships, etc). Societal relationships are egalitarian precisely because a societal relationship is not a marriage, therefore societal relationships are not meant to be conducted as if they were marriages. (Marriage is meant to be unique and unlike every other relationship in a married person's life). So do not expect any woman to 'timidly behave like a submissive little wifey' towards any man who is not her own husband. That expectation is not Biblical. Feminism was invented to correct a widespread worldly myth that "women are inferior to men, therefore any & every woman should be submissive to any & every man including all the men who are not married to her." That worldly myth of alleged female inferiority created two-caste societies, in which the male (upper) caste had full civil rights, but the female (lower) caste was deprived of many civil rights. Original feminism was never about abortion, lesbianism or misandry, it was always about civil rights, specifically "restoring the egalitarianism which should be characteristic of societal relationships."

Atheist is the opposite of theist and there can be religions that aren't theist, and there can be non-religious people who believe in a god they came up with, or who believe there could be some kind of god. So you could have a religious atheist and a non-religious theist. This interpretation is actually very ancient. If you want to know why a certain word was chosen, go to either the Midrash or the septuagint. Speaking of midrash, the word more complicating the translation is the word after: "a help against him" (in hebrew: ezer kenegdo), the midrash says: if he've won, she'll be a help, if he haven't - against him. (in hebrew: zacha - ezer, lo zacha - kenegdo)

Companion sure but I don't think they are meant to be equals and I think the Bible is clear about the desired relationship between men and women. Men lead women like God leads His people. And women respect and be loyal to her husband as His people are supposed to be to Him. More so it would be companion or helper as in complement. Modern Hebrew Ezer doesn’t mean rescuer. It’s an uncommon word for the meaning “helper”, but it does mean helper, or help. It’s very much possible that Ezer meant rescuer, and that the modern day meaning is influenced more by the globalized culture. Help as a concept itself is also influenced. But it’s unlikely that a drastic change like that occurred for all the words that are related to Ezer, like Ezra (help) or Azar (helped).

It says helper not to mention the rest of the Bible goes on to continually say women are below men women are to help men never they are above men or they are equal except in one verse in the gospel which I believe is in Mathew.

@@brahimdiop5506 the Bible, that we know today wasn’t officially fully compiled until the year 500 but they used all of the original writings from the apostles, who had been writing since before, and after the death and resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ. And you are correct modern English is 500 to 600 years old so you have to remember when they were originally translating the Bible to English the Catholic Church instead of directly translating, Hebrew, Greek, and Aramaic they decided to just take the entirety of the Greek translation, and put it into Latin, which doesn’t directly translate. And then they translated the Bible from Latin to German, which also doesn’t translate directly, and then German was used as the middle language to create the original English translation of the Bible, because German was the only language close enough to English at the time because they were sister languages. So as English eventually evolved, they had to continuously translate. The Bible and words ended up having dual meaning, and the Bible in the English translation became very obscure. You didn’t see an actual cleaning of the English Bible until about the 14 or 1500s and the English translation of the Bible is still being cleaned up to this day in the protestant circles. But in the Orthodox Church thankfully they have been doing direct translations for quite some time I believe in a year 1843 they made a direct translation from all of the languages in the Bible to English, and unfortunately orthodoxy was not very popular in the west and still isn’t but orthodox Christianity is on the rise in the west and so the orthodox Bible is being used more.

Wow. His dad had so much faith. This is inspirational, as I am a mom myself. I completely understand not wanting to be rejected and a second class citizen. Who wouldn’t? He made the worldly and “logical” choice to live a fun and easy life like everyone around him…. but that was NOT his purpose!!! God is good to pursue His children and direct our path! I also love that his name is Joseph. Joseph is such a solid man of God in the Bible.

Since the word has both meanings, you'd have to read it in context of the whole Bible, and yes, the Bible does put the man as the autority of the family, the head of the woman, so Eve IS the helper. She didnt rescue Adan from anything, he was great with God, didnt need rescue. It wasnt good that man was alone for the purposes of God of multipliction, but Adan was 100% complete and happy with Gods presence.

in my old testament class in college, my professor lectured about this translation, and another thing she emphasized was that “ezer” is something that god is described as many times in the bible (god is a helper and a rescuer) - so eve’s description as “ezer” is a meaningful way that she is made in the image of god

Really interesting! I just checked and in French the translation is closer to "I will make him an assistance akin to him". I also checked Hungarian, it is the same as in English.

I don’t think he actually speaks Hebrew, the word he used does mean “helper/assistant.” If he wanted it to mean rescuer then it would have to be “matzil” מציל and not ezer.

@@dronite0019 Yeah, he is obviously not a linguist. He uses the language like a poor translator with a cheap Hebrew-English dictionary and an agenda. Especially when he talks of the "andro-centrism" of the language. It's sad... well, pathetic, really.

@@dronite0019 Would you think there is a chance the word may have slightly changed meaning since the rebirth of the language? The English translation seems to imply that Eve is a subordinate of Adam, but in French - although you could also interpret it that way - Eve will be of assistance, instead of her being an assistant (if that makes sense). French also added "akin to you", instead of "suitable for him". I'd be interested to know what you make of it.

​​@@FrancoisTHX The KJV says "a help meet for him", which would imply to me that she was to be someone to help him through life's decisions and problems that would be equal (meet) to him, that would balance him. This man just doesn't understand the different definitions of English words; apparently to him, any given word has one definition, his, and any other definition doesn't count as "correct" in his eyes. Edit: and in this verse, you can't really separate the "help" from the "meet for him", as that's part of the explanation of what God is looking to provide.

"...then you may go to her and be her husband and she shall be your wife" (every translation I've read is more-or-less this) - 'aḥar (after(time)) kēn (therefore/thus) bô' (enter) 'ēl (toward/in reference to) bāʿal (rule over/possess) hāyâ (to happen/to become/to be) 'iššâ (woman) - "after, enter to her to rule over her; she shall be your woman" I'll appreciate it when people properly learn of the goodness of God. Yes, men are to rule.

The video is false. Even was a helper. Adam didn't need a rescurer. Helper works better than rescuer for the word in question, ezer, in other verses. Indeed, every time, in every context, the KJV uses the word "help" (help meet for Eve).

@@jamesreed5678 This whole debate is a bit semantic, it's just that we have to differentiate between Eve being the kind of helper that is lesser than Adam and more like the helper that compliments Adam. Even if she is a rescuer, it's still true that she rescued him from loneliness.

“Reinforcements” has been the best word choice I’ve heard. It implies no order of importance. Just true interdependency. That doesn’t imply that God made them interchangeable, but both are made in His image as is made clear in Genesis 1:28.

Seems to me the Bible makes it pretty clear men and women are equally important and equally valued.
