Good video. I definitely noticed a big difference when i regeared my TJ to 4.56. Now i need 5.13 for the Gladiator and 4.88 on tje Commando 😊

Good video. Hit all the right stuff without going too deep. Weighing your vehicle costs ~$15 at a truck stop and also helps. My ‘21 JLUR Xtreme Recon came with 35’s and 4.56 gears and weighed ~5,250 lbs. After 2 yrs I swapped to 37” tires and added aluminum skids and bumpers, took out 2nd row of seats and added an Ursa Minor camper bringing my base weight up to 5,750 lbs. My Hwy MPG dropped from ~20 mpg to 15 MPG and I rarely saw 8th gear, 5th gear in the mountains of Colorado. 9 mos later I pulled the trigger on 5.13 gears. My rig feels better, Hwy mpg increase to 18-20 because I was in 8th gear more often. Offroad crawling is fantastic. Gearing makes a huge difference and like the presenter says, going slowly and deliberately helps dial in the process.

Great video, I have a 2023 JT Rubicon with 35s and the Alu Cab Canopy Camper. I live in southwest GA and travel all over the country and Canada with my vehicle. I had about decided the 4:88 ration was the one I wanted, this video made my mind up for that.

very good overview. The bride and I were just talking about this subject. Bought our 1st Jeep in June, Rub X with 35 and 4.56. looking at buying a Gladiator next year and would like to run 37 after a 2.5 incv lift, at least that is the thought process. you gave me a lot to think about.

Easy way for someone to find out starting gear option. Current axle ratio x new tire size then divide by current tire size...round up 3.73 x 37..÷ 32 = 4.31...up goes to 4.56. Gets you back to power point before you added bigger tires

Also...you can totally reuse a set of "match" gears in a set used together. Say you re geared...then later wanted a locker...you can absolutely reuse that gear set
@SFJ4x42 ай бұрын
That's fine if you do that personally but we as a business will not re-use gears
@thehouseman812 ай бұрын
@SFJ4x4 well yeah your in the business to make money. Just know to use other words than they harden to eachother. The wear or match to eachother. They do not harden ...if that the case gears would snap all the time. As somthing hardens it looses ductivity...knows as flex. Not the same as gears

Just a FYI even the Yukon Bible has a mention about using used gears...and i think they may know a thing or 2 @SFJ4x4

If you have larger than stock tires you will not regret regearing your axles. My poor WJ is in desperate need of a set of gears.

My old WJ needed a regear even with stock tires 😂 They are geared for the highway

Great info -- learned a lot as a Jeep newbie. Just acquired a stock 2023 Jeep Gladiator Overland. 3.73. Planning to replace the stock sub-40 pound H/T tires w/ 58-60 pound A/T 34's. Will use it as a daily commuter and, on the weekends, to reach remote trailheads via Forest Service roads. And for SAR. May sometimes tow a very light 4x5 Lowe's utility trailer. Probs OK not regearing?
@SFJ4x419 күн бұрын
You might see a marginal improvement with 4.10s, but it’s not necessary. In my opinion, the investment wouldn’t be justified at this point.

..thanks for sharing...question: is it also more advantageous to have both remapping and regearing in your 4wd truck? If yes, which should come first, remapping or regearing?

I have a jk 2015 wrangler sport unlimited with 33s and stock rims, was considering going to 3.73 for gears.. too little to still off road ? I live in Iowa so not a load of options here but driving it to its destinations for the overlanding trip. It’s also a daily driver. Lots more going on my jeep too bumpers winch lights cans ect. Thank for any advice given !
@joeobrien64052 ай бұрын
I'd go at least 4.56 because 35's or 37's are coming
@Brownguy3422 ай бұрын
3:73 with 33’s would be adequate. 4.10 would be better. Honestly if it is a daily driver and occasional weekend warrior I would keep it stock as possible.
@SFJ4x42 ай бұрын
I'd recommend leaving it alone right now until you lift it and go to bigger tires. See how that feels then decide from there.
@thehouseman812 ай бұрын
@joellivingston6175 depends on your area and parts for sale. Lots of times you can find stock jk axles with different ratios at a fraction of the cost of re gearing...maybe grab a set of axles and swap them in. Then you have your stock axles to re gear if you want even lower

Excellent video…thanks! I have a ‘21 JTRD. 12# winch and usually have 300-400 lbs of gear in the back + my 350ish personal drag on gravity. Will be running 37-38’s and plan to add rockers & belly skids. Gearing recommendations? Also, where can we find those spreadsheets?
@SFJ4x42 ай бұрын
You're probably going to be better off in 5.13 with the bigger tires but since you're a diesel you could probably get away with 4.88s. Also, I put a link to a spreadsheet in the description for you.
@thehouseman812 ай бұрын
@@dougstdig look at that math in my other post...get you in the ballpark quick
@thehouseman812 ай бұрын
@dougstdig your jtrd should have 3.73 gears with 33in tires so if you do the math 3.73 x 37 = 138.01 ÷ 33 = 4.18...round up to next gear set put you at 4.56 will put you on 37s with about the same millage/ power you currently have

@SFJ4x4Ай бұрын
You don't NEED to, but you definitely should. Especially if you're still running on the factory gears, it's probably time to replace them anyway.

So if I have a 04 TJ with 4.0, nv3550 with .78 final drive. Dana 30 front Dana 44 rear with 4.56 gears and 33" tires. But I want to go to 35 and trailer it. Should I stick with 4.56 or go 4.88 or 5.13?
@SFJ4x42 ай бұрын
Normally we gear 4.56s with 35s but if you like the way it performs now, go with the 4.88s when you go to 35s
@BRONZE_ROCK2 ай бұрын
@@SFJ4x4 I don't like how it performs right now. In a slow craw fine but as soon as you need to climb something it fights to not stall out so I end up doing the two foot shuffle. As far as of line torque and acceleration it's good, but at highway speeds rapid climbs in elevation leave me down shifting it and making that 4.0 scream.
@thehouseman812 ай бұрын
@BRONZE_ROCK no way do dana 30 with 4.88 if you plan on really offroading...your pinon just way to small. 35s and trailer it...sounds like you should be looking at a front 44 before wasting money into that 30
