Look up every cinema rig from Blackmagic or Canon and they have this lens attached. It's in every video shooter's arsenal. An unheard of super fast zoom covering a decent range of 18-35mm f1.8 on aps-c. Testing it out on the full frame Canon R8. Pros and cons to Sigma lenses in general. Sharpness at the cost of 3d pop and micro contrast? What I look for in a lens.

I have a boatload of Sigma Art lenses (I have a set both for Canon and for Nikon), and I adore them. sure, the 135mm weighs the same as some long telephoto lenses, but I love the look it produces anyway. If I'm shooting a prime off of a tripod, it's probably a Sigma. To compound my sins, I like the Tamron SP primes for hand held work because they are stabilized. I don't own a single Zeiss or Voitlander lens. I do also have a collection of very old glass (mostly old M42 screw mount lenses and Nikon ai and ais lenses) but generally speaking, I prefer autofocus lenses with all other things being equal.

3D Pop is real, but I was surprised to see in the test shots of the Sigma vs your Zeiss 55mm, that actually the Sigma looked just as 3D! It's nowhere near the Voigtlander 20mm but it's not bad. Proud to say I've owned the 18-35mm for 8 years now and will never sell it, I just keep adapting it to new camera bodies.
@darrenorange2982

I think the 3D pop is really just contrast. The Sigma has a lot more contrast vs the other lenses and in general is sharper and has more detail. This can be tweaked in post or with a filter. Sigmas are fairly clinical.
@audioupgrades
@audioupgrades 8 ай бұрын
The Zeiss 55mm is actually a Sony lens; made by Sony with a rented Zeiss badge. The Voigtlander is actually a Cosina lens, made by Cosina with a rented Voigtlander badge. They're not bad lenses but it is wrong to take the licensed logo literally. They are not actual Zeiss or Voigtlander lenses, so if you think they are magical because of the logo, you are wrong.

I recently filmed a boudoir shoot with a new Sigma Art 24-70 f2.8 MKII cost over £1200 and a Helios 44-2 bought £40 of ebay. The Helios put the Sigma to shame. The Helios felt like it got black mist, low contrast filters built in, the roll off was excellent, bokeh and overall feel made it look organic. The Sigma was harsh looking mess and if in good lighting look very video-ish.

Personally, I don't see the 3d pop you are talking about. I bet if you take the Pepsi challenge with those lenses, you won't see it either, at least not every time. On my OG and P4K, I have the MB .71 Speedbooster, and you can control the Tones on both cameras. The 18-35 goes down to F1.3 with the Speedbooster. That Sigma 16mm looks fantastic on the 6400, or any other camera, plus it's cheap. I rate the 18-35 #1, and the 16mm #2 as far as the best lenses from Sigma, at least the ones I have tried.

For a fairly logical explanation of what "3-D Pop" is, see the article: "MICRO-CONTRAST, THE BIGGEST OPTICAL LUXURY OF THE WORLD". I do have one minor disagreement with the article, however. The author claims that 3-D pop is independent of resolution. That is incorrect. Imagine a single eight by ten inch pixel that has a billion color variations or shades of grey. When we look at it, we will see only one color, since it is only one pixel. In order for enormous dynamic range to be effective, high resolution is necessary, and the higher the better. On DXOMARK, the color depth is called "Portrait". What is being measured is how many different values can be stored in a single pixel (on a logarithmic scale).

I am not defending Sigma ,my dad does not own this company so I don't to vouch for them , but you talked so many times about " a pop " which I did not really see and the sigma looked better to me. The most important to me in a lens is the lack of chromatic aberration. If there is any I puke and delete the video all together and sell the lens immediately. Please try to do a 3d pop blind test. About colour reproduction, every lens will be slightly different based on the coatings but as long as you white balance before the shot, it won't even matter. Also you seem to have absorbed all these buzzwords like 3d pop, micro contrast etc, from the theoria apophasis guy, who is a complete phoney. He uses complicated words to seem smart but once you parse through his word salad you'll start understanding that none of what he says actually makes sense. He's something of a crank (I only watched his Angry Photographer series, his metaphysical stuff is not my cup of tea), and swears like a sailor, but his lens recommendations are usually good. His advice for lens cleaning is completely correct. He does not like Sigma either, but he loves Tamron (shrug). I have almost all of the lenses he raves about, and I like them too. There is room in the world for different opinions. Consider Jared Polin (I shoot raw) and Ken Rockwell (I shoot Jpeg). Personally, I shoot raw too, but look at Ken's images. They're great. There are contrasty lenses and lenses that wash out at the slightest hint of backlighting. For some people, contrast is very important. It's a viewpoint, and viewpoints are never wrong. "I like X!" "No that's wrong!" It's only wrong if he's lying because it's a viewpoint.

Statements like "This lens has more totally immeasurable polymorphic fluxions that give the viewer that certain je ne sais quoi" or similar gobbledygook are pointless, meaningless, useless and add nothing to the discussion. Sigma lenses differ a lot. Their nicest lenses are the old DSLR lenses that are marked "EX DG" with tons of 3D pop and character. As you're using DSLR versions of Canon lenses, it wouldn't be difficult to find some old Sigmas too. The Sigma 50mm f1.4 EX DG HSM is a legendary secret sauce lens (I have several copies in case I lose some). The Art lenses are good for shooting clean images. The Contemporary lenses have a bit more character. In short, Sigma has almost every type of lens that you could want.

I bought that 18-35 f/1.8 Art . When it came out I fell in love with its versatility. It has character of vintage and modern combined . My words on the reviews of that lens, “the Sigma 18-35 will be a legendary lens “ Sigma lenses usually are flat flat flat .

man, I think you just debunked yourself. 😅 I mean, I get what you're saying about Sigma lenses, but in this video they got amazing 3D pop actually. Especially 16mm f1.4 on a6400, I like it a lot.

I don't see which one has 3D pop. I genuinely don't know what you are talking about all this time. Rendition of out of focus backgroung is essentially the same. Details are similar. Cut-out of the subject from the background is similar.

Yes, I love my Leica 9mm. Combined with the digital zoom and ex tele converter on G9, I don't even use my zoom anymore (for video). Also the jokes in this one, laughed real hard!

It's even better because it trolls photographers by choosing a random spot to place to focal point 30% of the time when you use phase detect autofocus on this lens It's so diabolical because they'll think it's reliable but then when they go to edit later, BOOM, shots ruined because it's out of focus BWAHAHAHAHA

Why do you keep trying to prove the 3D pop of Zeiss, Leica etc by comparing them with shorter focal length lens of others? Is it a joke? Of course at 55mm you will have better separation with 35mm.

Honestly I record most of my KZbin Talking Heads with the Sigma 16-28mm F2.8 and it is not heavy at all; also usable for vlogging… it is no art lense though, but sharp for video on my A7IV (don‘t throw anything I know only 60fps in crop, but hey 120p in FHD 🤣). 3D Pop? Don‘t know, apparently not, but also personal preference, right!? Also did a review about this lense on my channel and Autofocus is, as you said very fast on it. Price, 899,- better than Sony’s 2000,- … Anyway, great entertaining video as always.

Honestly? All of those lenses looks pretty much the same IF we talk about youtube show. I don't really get the pursuit for better look. I'd understand if your show was about something cinematic than maybe it would be worth to search for those extra 2% but talking head? Any lens is fine :) We are here for the entertainment
