Dealing with uncertainty feels like working while feeling a need to sneeze, but not being able to; incredibly unsatisfying, to the point where I wish I could just forget about and never use Statistics ever. Unfortunately, it's too useful to ignore :/

I don't know if it was intentional, but having the climax of a video about hating statistics be a thesis that mathematicians hate statistics based on a made up statistic that 80% of math students are autistic is very fitting. Sobering, boring numbers: "A total of 378 mathematics undergraduates (selected for being strong at “systemizing”) and 414 students in other (control) disciplines at Cambridge University were surveyed with two questions: (1) Do you have a diagnosed autism spectrum condition? (2) How many relatives in your immediate family have a diagnosed autism spectrum condition? Results showed seven cases of autism in the math group (or 1.85%) vs one case of autism in the control group (or 0.24%), a ninefold difference that is significant." - Mathematical Talent is Linked to Autism, Springer Science, July 3 2007 Even if every autistic math student was an ardent statistics hater, it would barely make a dent in the polls. It's also fitting that the use of statistics can more rigorously evaluate a sociological hypothesis.

it sort of was intentional, i knew the statistics were of poor quality but then again, i dont like statistics

I think one of the main reasons students dislike stats is that its effectively just applied measure theory/probability theory. I’m not sure what the kind of level the stats course you were taking was, but from my personal experience most undergrad stats stuff is just taking results from measure theory/probability theory as a given (which math students DO NOT like) and applying it to real world situations (which math students DO NOT like). One of the things I love about mathematics is that if I really wanted to, I could derive everything I’ve learned from first principles, but I cannot say this about statistics.

Another reason I think pure mathematics is more liked than applied mathematics is because applied mathematics is a "job" while pure is a "hobby". There are people like KZbinrs who made their hobby into jobs and got burnt out and started hating those hobbies.

@elginbeloy90662 ай бұрын
Why? It is almost Normal it just has a skew like basically every real world dataset would have. We use normal because its a good "fit" for these situations, not because you are gonna see perfect Gaussians in nature ever (been doing data work for years, still NEVER seen one). That is why we have skew and kurtosis. To make our idealized model match the real world better. For real data about a population the idea that both sides would be perfectly symmetric is like wishful thinking. This comment is funny to me because the resulting graph does actually show the "Normal" aspects of population data pretty well. Could have been bimodal. But nope, like we expect mean in the middle, both sides are close to symmetric. But because there is slight skew we are surprised.

Statistics was funner to me then Calculus. And I learned quite alot. I think what it taught me was how easy it is to ‘lie’ with it lol. Both in the softer sciences (Political Science and Economics come to mind) and day to day life (Studies show that consume cows milk makes you 69% more fat!) I even think I liked it because I always had a thing for RPGS and optimizing plays. Statistics is about pattern matching, almost like computer science. It is just with statistics those patterns are EVERYWHERE. Oh and you most likely only learned one side of the statistic coin. Don’t get me wrong, frequentist statistics has more uses in the STEM world, but Bayesian statistics has more general uses everywhere else. Or maybe I am flipping them? I don’t know, studies show 42% in a group of 420 common folk don’t understand statistics 🤷 Source: It was revealed to me in a daydream in statistics class. (I got a B, which is good enough lol)
@kylezdancewicz73462 ай бұрын
Nah Bayesian statistics is better for predicting data while frequentist is only really any good for things that have lots of existing data on. The problem is predictions just become better predictions in the light of preexisting data when preexisting data can’t predict anything if no such data is present.

I personally had a butt-ton of fun self-studying probability (and in the bigger circle, statistics), it's super fun and enjoyable, but the problem which I believe, is: Probability and statistics rely HEAVILY, on wording, and bear in mind, 80% of us, as you said are autistic, so when I retook probability (I self study a course at least 3 times before actually taking it in college) in a university where the Professor lounge has the cumulative English reading and writing of a 7 year old + the "stress" of the outcome of this course, would probably make you hate it.

Whats funny is that stats initially brought me to love mathematics, but as I got deeper into the math, I got aggravated by stats and much more preferred calculus or abstract algebra. Ive been studying stats again some more, and Ive been coming to a re-appreciation of it. But lately Ive been having a mini existential crisis on what "likelihood" even means beyond the textbook definition 😅

AI student here. We do a lot of Maths and I enjoy it except for reasoning and decision making since its basically stats. Everyone seems to think the same and everyone loves it when we do Linear Algebra and Calc. There is a lot of theoretical Pure maths that we do that can potentially be useful in AI. Me personally I don't hate Mechanics and Logics but I do hate Stats. It seems so unrefined in my opinion. With Pure, Mechanics, and Logic half the times I don't even know what I am doing, I just do whatever makes sense and let the Maths guide me and it works. With Stats, this approach doesn't really work.

You gained 500 subs in what feels like 5 minutes. Congrats! The editing keeps climbing steeply, very well. Just be sure to not go overboard. What I have observed, is that especially the zooming is a little on the heavy side here. I would suggest to tone it down, zoom less and less fast. You know what they say, less is more. Insane zooming and panning makes people sick quickly. Also, I would suggest, that you try to get down all the text at once, whenever you are being shown speaking, so that you don't have annoying jump cuts there. They serve no purpose, but to lower the quality of your video. If it need 10 takes, then so be it. Do you know Tom Scott? He memorized insanely long monologues and it's beautiful, how smoothly this goes down. Your texts are way shorter, you can definately go with them in one take. Other than that, keep it going! Next week 500 more. =D

Funny, I didn't know statistics was disliked by maths student. I have never cared about maths and have forced myself through much of it for the sake of statistics, and only to the extent that I need it to fully grasp some statistical concept, because I became quite obsessed with it. But I'm in the social sciences and I'm drawn to variable clusterfucks and uncertainty.
@caspermadlener41912 ай бұрын
The reason people find math satisfying is because of what happens in your brain when you solve a difficult problem. The reason statistics sucks is that there is usually no point where you have "solved" a statistics problem, leaving you unsatisfied.
@bentrolley4316Ай бұрын
You got me pretty much dead on there. I taught myself a mechanics module (M3) that wasn't taught at my college in order to avoid doing any stats. I definitely regretted that a couple of years later during my physics degree... Still consider it to be highly suspicious tbh. Statistical mechanics is some kind of eldritch trickery that humankind should not ken. A big part of my preference is intuition - I can intuit a lot about pure maths and mechanics, but stats just doesn't click in the same way. Couldn't explain Bayes' formula in plain language if my life depended on it.

Honestly, I didn't like it so much, and I imagine most of us don't, because everything feels just a little arbitrary, and the metrics we have don't measure things as clearly as what we'd see from other branches - think: Simpson's paradox, and the non-linearity of correlations, etc. Stats becomes enjoyable usually after a healthy dose of probability and functional analysis imo.

I think statistics professors should always talk about the fascinating applications of statistics, but this should go for every unit in university. How the concepts you are learning are applied in the real world, how it solved problems in economics, computer science and etc. The problems they make you solve should be related those interesting applications Yeah, statistics on its own is pretty boring. Like why do I need to know the t-distribution? And teacher will give a reply like well its important for blah blah. But, instead a teacher should give response about how it revolutionised this field and how its used in this field. I think its only logical to teach statistics like this because thats what why it is used.
