My main problem with strive slayer as someone who has mained him in every GG is the fact that arcsys, by trying to homogenize the rosters basic options(mainly how gatlings work), have added slayer with all of his good moves, yet none of the downsides. 2h is still a godlike normal, but now you can gatling into it with whatever timing you want(allowing for the nightmarish frametrap 2h scenario described in the video) and they made it special cancellable. They also gave it fantastic CH properties for no apparent reason. They made a good button with obvious weaknesses into the god emperor of all normals. C.s, which used to be a relatively bad starter for slayer as his gatlings were severely limited in their ability to combo into his damaging stuff(H buttons and dandy step followups), now he can gatling into any of said buttons, making it his best combo starter. Slayer used to have to get a good starter and spend meter in order to do the extreme damage he's known for, now he just hits C.s. and does 40% meterless, 70% for 50 tension. Arcsys turned slayer, a character defined by gameplay which encouraged risky plays and gambling with his high health to attempt to hit a big, commital move(6h, pilebunker etc.) into someone with none of the risk and all of the reward.

That's a good way of putting it. They bottlenecked all of his risk into pilebunker and his backdash, but made everything else extremely tight and reliable Now, what used to be a relatively rare explosive cash-out, is just whatever fat button he presses into a high damage confirm It kind of overshadows whatever nuance he has when everything just leads into "Fat Damage"

For the most part, my main issue with Slayer is giving him a -1 option while also getting way better reward from essentially a neutral RPS situation despite being minus. It's like that one Baki meme where Baki and Yujiro play RPS where even though Yujiro threw the "losing" option of scissors (mash on minus frames) to Baki's rock (press on +1), Yujiro cheeses it and crushes Baki's hand into doing paper with scissors to win anyway.

Basically articulated my concerns with the character. The high damage isn’t so much the issue, it’s the plethora of ways to get that damage that makes the character unfun to play against.

I remember Hotashi's recent video where he argues (IIRC) that Slayer's damage isn't an issue because everyone can do tons of damage in Strive. Then he shows Ramlethal getting a really nasty hit, setting up highly developed pressure that deals a lot of chip damage, and then getting another really strong hit to open the opponent up and win. And I was just thinking, that whole time, “Slayer doesn't need to do anywhere near this much stuff and he still does more damage.” There was also his point about it not mattering whether you do 50% or 80% because you're still killing in two combos, but that ignored everything outside of combos, which does indeed happen in every match. And he capped it off by dismissing “Slayer is too easy” complaints as more or less whinging, which it can be... but, also, it's a valid critique? Slayer doing stuff more easily is a balance matter. Ease of use isn't separate from game balance, it's an integral part of it. SQ goes much deeper into that point in this video than I can in just a comment. This video, needless to say, feels much more considerate of how the game's actually played. I don't agree with everything SQ says but I feel like she's less prone to coutnerproductive Git-Gud-ism than Hotashi is; in this case, it made it so she was pretty bang on the money. That said, I could have misinterpreted Hotashi's arguments or misremembered them since I watched his video a few days back. Shame on me if that is the case.

Finally someone mentions the c.S starter mix that loops into itself. Absolutely baffling how no one does it and the character still does so well. Btw if you are out there thinking "it's reactable" or "it's a knowledge check". No, it's not reactable and the slayer player has three to four ways to change whether the c.S crosses up or not.

Pmappa being -1 honestly reminds me of something in Tekken that’s pretty common. Moves Being neutral or even slightly positive, can be worse than neutral or slightly negative moves. The mind games you can play when your opponent knows they should be able to take their turn is more valuable then them always holding block when you’re plus 1 or neutral. I think something similar is happening here with slayer

I hope they make his low risk high reward moves in RPS, such as 2H, 6P, 236K, much more risky on block and whiff. With that at least we get a meaningful punish when we guess or react correctly, instead of letting him get into the same stupid RPS again.

I feel like a lot of issues with damage at the moment are aimed at characters like Sol and Slayer who get absurd routes off of fairly mundane stuff. I think Bunker loops look cool and them going away would be a shame, but I have to wonder what weakening them will end up doing to the character overall. It's also worth noting that in the past Slayer's 2H wasn't special cancellable, and we've seen certain moves like Leo's sweep lose special cancel properties to make their best reward reliant on counterhits. I think it's possible we could see that with Slayer's 2H or even his sweep in the future.

I feel they need to tune johnny and slayer down a bit. I feel johnny was was overtuned. Slayer i feel has just come to their own so its just tune them a little.

That's true against a lot of characters, but... in my mind it's more that Slayer makes it *very* easy for you to make mistakes. Like she explained in the video, he can brute force his way into a hyper-advantageous position, not even really winning neutral, and then punish you with the extreme damage that would, on other characters, be reserved for actual hard callouts.

I agree, but to be fair this is Strive, most characters are killing you off of 3 semi-decent starters, 2 if you play a low HP character.

Okay let’s talk about Master’s Hammer. It’s a mid-hitting low-invul guard crush that crosses up with forward DS up close but has hitboxes on both sides of Slayer’s hand. So no matter what direction he’s coming at you it’s nearly impossible to whiff. The only way to avoid it is by preemptively jumping, and the only ways you can hit him out of it are using a preemptive reversal or praying your 5p can hit him out of it on reaction. If you jumped it, good luck getting a punish in, since it recovers in only 16 frames. So if you press a button too late or pick a slower, more rewarding option, you WILL get hit by C.S. Because it’s Slayer. Of course he’s mashing C.S when he whiffs something. But what happens when you block it? It’s a guard crush so naturally you’re taking a fat chunk of chip damage, but then you just watch in horror as Slayer gets to do basically anything he wants, considering he happens to be *+26.* So you’re really at his mercy with that. If you think having 25 frame startup is a weakness of Master’s Hammer, keep in mind that he gets invulnerable frames from frames 4-23, so the speed doesn’t end up mattering anyways. Overall it’s one of his best moves, and by some miracle it doesn’t end up invalidating any of his other options from Dandy Step because all of them are bonkers.

The music awakened a deep memory from my childhood and I spent like 15 minutes looking for what it was. Great choice, hahaha In addition to P mappa not being -1 (which literally feels like dolphin RPS for some characters) and more risk on 2H, I'd love to see K mappa get a dolphin hurtbox. You know, just complete the analogy on that one.

I think if they are going to balance him, they should nerf his reversal by making it no longer invincible and make it take like 7 frames to travel fullscreen, instead of 1 frame, and make 2h minus 23 and cant be canceled on block, plus make his damage get scaled very fast.

As a slayer player, when people said they wanted him I started laughing internally. The most common complaint between my friend group is that the damage was too high and that the game was extremely volatile.......so....you're telling me, that you want the character who makes everything invincible and is notorious for one shotting people.

Im not a pro in the game but ever since he's been added its been pretty unfun I play Bedman? and yes in this patch he has become strong but still its way too frustrating to fight against him i have to develop a third eye to play meanwhile they just mash whatever and already took half my life without even needing to combo

New crossup mix and i cannot resort to zoning because of the full screen super But thats not the problem the thing about Slayer is too much damage tell me why is it ok that only connecting 2 pile bunkers and half your health is gone? Thats what makes him frustrating i used to be hyped about the character released i wanted to play him but only 2 days playing him and i noticed that he is just way too strong the rounds only lasted seconds and thats not fun felt like i was playing alone

Finally somebody complaints about wake-up 50/50 (which is actually hard to time to avoid a cross up and still hit a meaty, timing is very strict being around 2 frames), let’s wait a bit and maybe people will figure out that slayer has fdc bite mixups…

They could reduce 2H recovery by a lot so it not spam able and still can Special cancel. i think that good. Then slayer need to use hes meter more and other button more and play more NATURALLY. Fighting need to be in check with two person not just one way around.

IDK at first I was on that Slayer-hate train, but now he doesn't really bother me. I guess it's because, as an A.B.A player, I too can find an opportunity to run an offense that he can't recover from. He's been nowhere near as troublesome to deal with as this patch's version of Jonny, which I'm slowly starting to hate the most out of any character. (I also just hate, hate hate Jonny's vibe too.)

I went 1-11 against a slayer today because we were having pretty good matches but in the end the only reason i won 1 of these matches is because i double perfected him, every other time he only needed to hit 1 move and it ended up in my hp being deleted

13:45 I'd like to say that 2K2D IS rewarding for most of the cast, saying they don't gain too much from it just sounds wrong (Bridget, Johnny, A.B.A, Millia etc.. All of them get their wincond running thanks to a 2K2D on hit) Other than that i agree with all the things u said.. and don't think Slayer will escape from that nerf hammer when the patch comes out

Just so everyone knows. Slayers crouching heavyslash was never special cancellable in past guilty gears. This is one of the reasons why I believe strive slayer is so much more powerful

I played Slayer and people just play absolutely ridiculous against him. I’m not even covering the mix up or the damage. Same round starts, same gameplans, I compare it very similar to Axl syndrome where they only want to play their game and melt when the opponent starts rolling.

Seems to me, the big part of a "Slayer problem is ego. Sol and Nago aren't less ridiculous but Slayer is significantly easier. So people think: "He won with no big effort uhhh". In reality your win rate against him might be as good as vs a couple of other chars but the ego, the ego hurts you

HC's RU stats at the top level are a bit of a red herring since most of his best players opted out of the elo system. I suspect they're conspiring to make him seem bad in case the Strive balance team looks at RU, which would be very on-brand for HC players.

I feel that we've had characters that were more broken (release hc) but we're getting such an outrage because slayer is insanely easy especially compared to chaos so every skill level is get owned which leads to complaining, myself included.

*watching old Strive videos* Yeah Sol is overtuned a bit, but this is basically the most balanced GG game ever. You can beat Sol with anything if you know the matchup. *watching new Strive videos* Man, Sol back then was insane. No character has ever been as broken as S1 Sol.

Since you asked at the start I'll just write out some thoughts I have about this before I watch the rest of the video. 1. I think Slayer is strong but I don't think he's overpowered. Or even the best character in the game. I think the problem is the *way* he is strong. 2. Slayer is heavily defanged once you know the matchup. A lot of his most powerful tools are fake. He has to spend resources and take risks like everyone else. But getting here feels like you have to do homework and when you are a floor 8 player, it feels unstoppable, and you need to do homework in a way you don't have to do with a lot of other characters. 3. When he wins it feels like he didn't have to work as hard. And truth be told, you don't. Slayer has so many knowledge checks that unless you know them, you really can autopilot with him and just erase people from existence with basic combos. It's not until you are in celestial that you can't do silly stuff because the better players will check you every single time. And then it's like playing an entirely different character. 4. I think the species of character that he is also makes people upset. It's a lot like how people dodge Axl. There are just some kinds of characters that people think aren't allowed to exist in fighting games. Oppressive zoners are considered inherently bad, as one example. You'll never see MvC2 Cable show up in a fighting game again. And it's obvious why: to beat zoners you need to master movement, a fundamental skill a lot of casual and casual-competitive players hate developing. Slayer is a robbery character. A zanshin character. He takes his shot and if he guesses right he lays you out. In terms of "feel", you never feel like you are really ahead of him since he can always reverse it. He forces you to play cautious and a lot of people really don't like that feeling. They like the progression of "as I get their health lower and my health is higher, I can be more aggressive." Slayer is designed to go against that. Much like how a trap character is designed to punish you for making choices. People hate that too. Byakuya from undernight wouldn't be liked outside of that games community which accepts this sort of stuff still. Since it's a hard fighting game. 5. Once you realize that Slayer has weak damage, the proper way to fight him is to, paradoxically, be super aggressive. This makes people uncomfortable since this feels risky (cause it is) , so they don't like the feeling of having to do the thing they don't want to win. Once you realize Slayer has no reversals, his normals outside of S and 2H are very beatable, you realize you can just slap him out of his punches too, just go insanely hard on him and he has no real defensive tools. He can't really abare either. But this feels bad to do if you are still soft on the games mechanics or are just a more reactive player. 6. Most of my concerns have to do with the upcoming nerfs he will inevitably get. My fear is that they won't change the way he plays, just cut him down numberwise. He will no longer be infuriating because he will no longer be effective. I don't think people realize how precarious he will be to balance. He has a few very strong tools, but removing any one of them will be devastating since he doesn't have other tools to cover the hole left. Likewise, he takes bigger risks than you realize to setup the silly damage stuff, if the silly damage is gone, he's just taking risks to do what better characters do for free. 7. It will also be just another step towards homogenizing the roster. Characters are much less diverse than they were in XRD and we are quickly at the point where, if Slayer is just trashed, it means "You just aren't allowed to have this kind of character in your game." Is that really what we want? We think we want it, but we really don't. 8. I would be for him having some of the knowledge checks toned down, or making it easier to punish bad guesses (adding 10 frames of recovery to 2H might feel great, since you were canceling out of it anyway, but it would remove slayer players using it as just a random poke that has a chance to strip 80% of your health). Then if you guess it's coming with a jump, you can easily just float over and give him a heavy punish. Those are the kinds of changes I'd be interested in. 9. If they do remove his damage, trading it in for some of his mixups and pressure to be real would be a good trade off. Again, my fear is that, the same with everything these days has the metacontext of being political, people "lobby" for buffs and nerfs with emotional thinking, and really what a lot of people want is "I just don't ever want to play against Slayer ever again." So just nerfing his damage into the ground means this very fun character is just unplayable now. He really is a one trick pony.

Ever since hes been in this game my anger issues have been riding up again. I dont know if its just me and my poor paitence...but everytime i get hit by a slayer nearly all of my health is gone

The anger is something for you to handle, but you're right that Slayer does very high damage off of almost anything, with none of the usual warning you'd get from anyone else in the game.

whether or not hes top tier, I hate fighting him cuz he has so little endlag I have trouble wiff punishing him on anything, or punish light pilebunker

Yup, Master's Hammer is shockingly fast to recover on whiff, and he actually has the fastest recovering far slash in the entire game, tied with Sol's.

I disagree. The stats you noted can simply be explained by him being the newest character. People haven't learned what to do to deal with him yet. Even some of the "looping" situations you described can easily be dealt with if you properly use FD and Deflect shield to relieve pressure if not put him in a bad situation. Not to mention, the situation you described was with a player in the corner. What character in this game has better options than their opponent when they're the one in the corner? Saying he has high damage is also a moot point in strive where literally every character has high damage. There are lots of characters in this game that are very easy to use and give you low risk high reward situations. Slayer is just the most successful at the moment because he's new and people haven't figured out the matchup yet.

This argument falls flat when you look at any other new character. None of them had a dominance period that lasted this long. People figured out Elphelt in a week.

1. You do have worse options than your opponent in the corner, but usually when the opponent is minus on block and out of cancel options, you can at least start a block string. -1 is a pretty nasty number. 2. Strive is a high damage game, but slayer can TOD potemkin with 2 hits of RISC. 50% off 3 moves. He has a super that does 75% to the tankiest characters in the game. The point is definitely not moot. 3. Slayer isn't new anymore. He is the NEWEST, but he isn't new. Slayer's tools are very strong. Tanky, high damage, good buttons, full screen plus on block approach options, safe ender from any blockstring, full screen invincible super, good mix, consistent plus frames, etc. The only real weakness Slayer has as a character is movement, but he is given way more than any other character in the game whose weaknesses are movement-related.

I'm a fairly mid-level Millia main and I personally don't find Slayer OP. He's a really good check for your fundamentals and neutral, where if you aren't up to snuff he'll jackhammer right through. He's a kind of difficult matchup, but not OP.

If we think Slayer is a problem then ky should be too. He also gets mad conversions, as well as great pressure. You have to actually work for high/low, but he's a way more powerful character in most ways. But people think hOnESt KiYy is fairer even though his interactions and reward are better than slayer in most ways except damage(most of the time). That and the winrate

IDK what to say honestly except just, pay more attention to the characters. Genuinely, this sounds like one of the takes you see from new viewers of an FG who don't actually play it or know much about how it works, but who want to feel insightful about it. I know that's insulting, I apologize. My point is that Ky has nowhere near the pressure or reward that Slayer does. Saying that he does shows a serious and very broad lack of understanding of both characters' capabilities, and the conditions they need to fulfill before they can actually reach their peak performance (this is what SQ is mostly demonstrating in the video; most things Slayer does put him in a lethally advantageous position).
