Thank you for this. I was always more of a Camaro guy but ended up with a 2016 Mustang GT I bought new. These catfish Camaros were on showroom floors when I was in high school. I used to fantasize about buying a black on black with leather t-tops SS with SLP package. Like, it felt like God put me on earth to own this car I loved it so much. Couldn't afford one until my late 20s but by then most were in poor shape so I ended up with a new car instead. But I always, always have a soft spot for these 4th gen SS's. The interior bits and little body parts didn't age well but the engines lasted forever.

Personally I like the 4th gen Camaro styling, GM manufacturing issues aside, and 325 Hp was quite respectable for the day. Working at Chrysler we would purchase competitive vehicles and test them as a result I had a chance to drive both 3rd and 4th gen F bodies. So when I retired I bought a 6th gen Camaro ZL1 convertible, love that car.

great video. A few nitpicks; Unless I am mistaken, the radio/deck was a period Chevrolet deck, so the Sunfire would not have received it - that car would have received a Pontiac version of the deck. I belive that GM streamlined their decks a couple years after this generation F-body was released. Also, SLP did the pre-1998 SS conversions - for 1998-2002 the SS (and Firebird WS6) package was actually all done at the factory. In your bit about the price of these cars, most of the listings shown are pre-1998 cars which were LT1 (non-LS) cars - these cars are less desireable than the 1998-2002 cars because the different older gen engines. I am Firebird guy, and remember when the WS6 package debuted - which is also around the time that the Camaro SS package came out. The inital cars had the hood actually connect to the airbox, which is why the hood is ducted as you show it. I still am a Firebird guy, and have heard no hate on the Firebirds of this time frame, so I was quite surprised to hear of the hate that the Camaros of this period are getting. In all this was a great video, and I like how the writing and presentation is consistent with the goofy/loveable style that James does.

As of right now the car is at my mechanic getting upgraded plugs, upgraded wires, new opti (yes, I know all of that is a pain in the ass which is why I'm not doing it lol), oil change and getting a new harmonic balancer as I type this. 97 30th anniversary. 4th gen baby!

Cool video. I have always been a Camaro guy especially the 3rd gen but I just recently acquired a 98 Z28 6 speed with 7,500 original miles on it. Unfortunately I have to drop the transmission and have it fixed, but that's OK it is what it is. Looking to put a couple upgrades on it and just enjoy the car.

In 2020, I was just starting at the post office and I was looking for a right hand drive vehicle to do my route in. On the way from Georgia to Alabama, I stopped at a little used car dealer because out front, they had a 2002 Camaro SS 35th Anniversary Edition. It was the orange with the silver stripes that faded into checkered flags. It was the rarest Camaro they made that year because it had all the options you'd want, it had the higher horsepower motor, the better suspension (it was the WS6 on the Trans Am) and it had the cool center exit exhaust. The only thing was, it had been ridden HARD. Only had like 90k miles, but every interior surface was worn, the mats were gone, the carpet was worn, the wheels had curb rash, etc. It would've taken $2-3k to get it right, but the most major thing that was worn, was the SLP sticker. It was gone, so there was no way to know if it was real without calling SLP. Nonetheless, I test drove it and fucking loved it. It chirped the tires in 1st-4th gears. The dealer wanted $14k for it which, had it been in good shape, would've been a great deal, but not in the shape it was in, and not questioning its authenticity. I told the dealer I needed a couple days to research and he said he'd put it on hold for me. So I called SLP, gave them the VIN and they printed the report, it was real, it was built on 9/11/01 and had every performance option they had. I was on my WAY to the bank to take out $10k for an offer the following morning when I got a call from the dealer. He asked if I had accidentally kept the keys after I test drove it. I said "No why?" He said "I was afraid you'd say that. I'm so sorry, but someone stole it. The keys and the car were gone when I came in this morning." He said if it was recovered he'd sell it to me. But I'm not an idiot. I know that guy drove it into the crusher to collect the insurance money because he never would've gotten what he was asking for it.

Also try to be more specific Ford and Shocking Chrysler at the same time were their own issues and generally very good as good as the Japanese even if people though the Japanese were better made.

People are morons.. injust watched some fool bid $23,000 for a rusted to hell 1970 boss 302 with no motor on ebay when they could have had 2 of these for the same price. Back in 2000 the camaro had it all above the mustang in looks and power

Another thing regarding the horsepower rating disparity vs the C5, they did in fact make the same horsepower of 345-350. Chevy deliberately claimed less horsepower on the Camaro for the reason you stated, internal competition. They both dyno at about 290hp at the wheels from factory. Some later camaros after 2000 received the LS6 intake due to parts shortages giving those particular camaros even more hp.

Ok. Here’s my 2 cents. I’ve owned every gen of Camaro except the current 6th gen. I still own a 4th gen 2001Camaro SS with CME with just 54k miles. The best all around most functional Camaro were the 1st gens. Several things I disagree with here. The 4th gen Camaro at the time it was built had the best build quality of any Camaro previous. The brand manager for the 4th gen was a guy named Scott Settlemire, who had just come from Lexus. Look at any unmolested and undamaged 4th gen and you will see exceptional body gap fit. It is screwed together pretty well. The design was influenced by the F-15 fighter. Which you can see it in the profile shape. It is my understanding that the sail panel issue is just for 2001 cars because GM changed the glue, which was changed again in 2002. The interior is where most GM cars fall short, but it is a compromise between style/ looks, performance and price. Can’t have it all in an affordable package. Personally, I’ll take the cheapo interior for great style and performance. Another thing, in 2001 we found out the Camaro was going away in 2002, so the cars kept their value for many years until the 5th gens came out in 2010. That’s because they were the last Camaro for 8 years, nobody was sure they were coming back...looks like 2023 will have history repeat itself. The cars styling has always been debatable, but remember when the 4th gen hit the streets in 93-94, they sold like hot cakes...because of the performance value and great looks and affordable price. The Camaro SS had upgraded suspension, wheels, exhaust (3 inch pipe vs 2.5), and allegedly 20 more hp than the Z28...who knows if that’s true. Chevy and lots of other manufacturers have been lying and underrating the horsepower of some muscle cars since the 60’s. Based on what I can see, that car in the video would be a 335 HP car because it has an upgraded optional SLP exhaust (dual/dual), which has two pipes on each side. The standard exhaust has one pipe sticking out on each side, and the other optional exhaust was the CME. They are advertised as being good for about 10HP. None are true dual exhaust but are cat back systems with the pipe from the diameter being bigger. Last thing dude, take a closer look at your car; the hood scoop connects and sends the air to the hole in front of the air cleaner, which makes it functional. How much improvement is debatable, but it still functions. Good video, and glad you put it out. I just became a subscriber.
