Bon-chan-san might well be single most perfect representation of the moral relativism/gray world view of the story, and our heroes, particularly early on in the story: By all accounts, he was a career assassin and seemingly completely remorseless criminal, as shown by his rise to the top ranks of Baroque Works (also something to consider when looking at Vivi and Igaram and thinking about how they reached their quite high-ranking positions...)... but also an unwaveringly loyal friend, to an almost absurd degree. Honestly, it's more difficult to comprehend how the same guy who didn't hesitate to kill people or turn all of Arabasta against Cobra (SERIOUSLY; he successfully turned the people against their King, yet none of us hate him, whereas Doflamingo failed to get the majority of the people to believe King Riku had betrayed them and was slaughtering them, and all of us think he's the absolute worst. ...Make sense of that, why don't ya...) also didn't hesitate to sacrifice himself for the Straw Hats despite just recently standing up to them as an enemy and fighting Sanji... Capricious; as whimsically impulsive in his choices as he is fluid in his self-identity... Ultimately, Bon Clay is one of the most brilliant displays of the series' ideal of individual freedom; no matter how flawed our choices, sticking to your principles, even if met with negative consequences, is something to be admired.

Honestly, the thing that has me the most worried about the second Netflix season of One Piece is just how they'll depict Bon Clay. Getting Chopper right is mostly a technical issue, but Bon-chan is bound to rub Netflix the wrong way for ideological reasons. Oda better keep a firm hand on the wheel for as long as the show is allowed to continue.

It's probably an attempt to either make it easier to understand for those who aren't familiar with what an okama is or an attempt to omit the line entirely. In the Crunchyroll subs at least, any time he says Okama it is almost always changed to "oh come my way" unless there is literally no other way to skirt it, in which case it's changed to "queer" or "queers"

I hope that one day in the future, Bon Clay gets his X mark. He posed as an allie but lacked the mark of friendship. Now as a true friend (Luffy acknowledged him by name, which he only does to friends) it would be fitting he gets his mark of friendship. Bon Clay is quite possibly my favorite character in one piece because of how devoted he is to his friends, he struggles with his convictions and even fails in what he believed in, only to rise again. Bon Clay is not the best character ever written, but he is absolutely a perfect representation of how humans belief and fear works. We all struggle to live up to what we would teach others, and it's nice when we get a lovable character who goes through the same internal hardship.

Bon-chan is one of my favorite characters in the entire show. The depth to his character is phenomenal. He's hilarious, he's cool, he's just genuinely fun to have on the screen at all times, and he has some of the most memorable moments of the arcs he shows up in. He will always be an honorary Straw Hat in my view. He's done every bit as much to risk his life for Luffy's as any of them have. I will never forget him desperately screaming for Luffy's recovery for half a day straight. Fucking chills. I'll never forget Bon-chan.

I think that Bon Clay had possibly the best development of all villains in the anime. A man with a botched sense of morality but a big heart of gold becoming the leader of Impel Down's secret, hidden society of prisoners is perfect. His entire flaw as a character is treating strangers with disdain - now he's leading a society with constant new arrivals of prisoners. If Luffy ever returns to Impel Down, I bet Bon Clay won't accept his offer to leave - because Bon knows that Impel Down will forever get more and more additions to the prison, more people who are doomed and tossed aside like trash by the Marines; people that Bon can try to help.

i'm actually a big fan of how "weird" and not dumbed down bon clay's identity is. i *never* see bigender characters, even in praised queer media, so to find one in one piece of all things, and for that character to be so beloved, was a breath of fresh air for me. op's queer rep can be pretty hit or miss for me, but bon clay really hits the mark. that's the reason i also love iva and inazuma by extension. they're weird and exaggerated but not in a stereotypical or derogatory way, and all of them, bon clay included, have luffy's full respect. that's just awesome to me.
