The thing I love the absolute most about Reigen (I love everything about him honestly) is that he is maybe the ONLY adult I've ever seen in a action manga and anime that reacts like a real adult should. Multiple times, especially in the fight at the end of s1, you see his focus begin to shift to trying to find a way for the children to get out safely. He is an adult, they are children, and even though they are all technically stronger than him, and in theory, could handle the situation, he sees that at it's roots, this is a dangerous situation, and they shouldn't have to fight in the first place. He doesn't care if it's seen as "giving up." Don't get me wrong, I love the good ol' teen hero whose master teaches him how to handle a battle, but I just adore an adult seeing that this is dangerous, and that they need to get out instead.
@swampcryptid2 жыл бұрын
This is absolutely true. His position as an adult is something that the story always embraces for what it is. Which makes the lessons he teaches - and simultaneously the themes of the show - way more reinforced, as well. He is sincerely kind and considerate of everyone around him, but he is never portrayed as “less mature” for being that way.
@Sentariana Жыл бұрын
Yes! That is what made me start to love him! Reigen is an adult mentor with good sense and charisma! So opposite to mentors/teachers like Kikashi (Naruto). And I adore that!!!
@albedo-sama9778 Жыл бұрын
@@Sentariana ngl after watching Kakashi and Reigen I've come to loathe Gojo from jjk. Despite being an adult the way he kept letting the kids get in harm's way kind of peeved me. Ik its probably played off as a joke how unserious he is as their mentor, but even Nanami, a friggin side character proved to be a better mentor figure to the mc compared to Gojo, THE MAIN MENTOR FIGURE OF THE SHOW. No matter how gorgeous he looks aesthetically, Gojo's an example of how not to write a mentor figure.
@RosyBlannx11 ай бұрын
@@albedo-sama9778 And yet thats how it works in JJK. Its really important how Gojo is portrayed, in my opinion, because we see him as this highly irresponsible character who has the power to mess around in Jujutsu Society, and this becomes more significant throughout and especially in season 2. It shows that people who have a significant flaw are stronger, and people who are seen as more logical (Nanami) or mature (Megumi, Nobara etc) get harmed due to that. For example, Gojo’s negligent nature, or Sukuna’s egotistical nature are both portrayed as beneficial and they are the strongest in the verse, and self-centredness is the most elevated thing in Jujutsu Society, with domain expansions literally being the reflection of the soul. The whole message Gojo and Sukuna reflects dulls down to strength is reflected in the way you act, and you cannot be strong unless you neglect others.
@gamergod98l868 ай бұрын
Thats the point though, Gojo is frequently called out in the story for being a bad teacher and an irresponsible adult. If you dont like it thats fine but its just preference, not an actual writing flaw (JJK definitely isnt perfect though but for other reasons)@@albedo-sama9778

He also accurately reads that the kid is faking being possessed when he's on TV, and the only reason he gets humiliated there is because he thinks the act is part of the show and goes along with it. When it comes to Reigens kindness I think something could've been said about how despite being a con artist, Reigens rates are super cheap and he even accepts non monetary compensation from clients who are struggling like the farmer. Also Reigen spoiler I feel like the Rusty curse arc(?) shouldve had some coverage, given that Reigen was willing to die for Tomoe despite not wanting her at the office in the first place. It's one thing to sacrifice your life for someone important you have cared for years, like with him and Mob. It's another to still unflinchingly accept a death curse to save someone you're not as familiar and have viewed mostly as a nuisance.

I think the contrast between Reigen's confession to Mob & Tome speaks volumes about Reigen's growth since the end of Mob psycho 100. Mob's confession was obviously more difficult due to the weight of the years of lies between them. Tome's confession was a cautionary tale - he sees himself in Tome and he wants her to have a normal fulfilling life away from him. But in both cases, Reigen would still put his life at risk to save children. It's a definite line in the sand for him despite his areas of grey

This video absolutely hits the nail on the head with Reigen. But as a side note that I find interesting-... Beyond Reigen's kindness and strength of character, I think his insane dedication and his emotional maturity are something else that made him the only person who could've mentored Mob. Like, not many people talk about this, but Reigen doesn't half-ass much, and that includes being a psychic, even if a phony one. He's clearly incredibly well researched on psychic abilities, evil spirits, the paranormal, etc. He was able to point out perfectly by symptoms alone what the boy on TV in the separation arc was possessed by, even if it was just acting. And when he borrows Mobs powers in the Claw Arc, despite the monolithic degree of power he's just absorbed and despite having zero real experience wielding any psychic powers, let alone the most powerful psychic abilities (presumably) to ever exist, he's able to wield them with a mastery, calmness, and ease that puts even Mob to shame with his multiple years of experience with them. Reigen had no idea what Mob was dealing with when it came to his powers and emotions (as he says himself in the Mob Arc) in part because Mob more often than not hid his true feelings, and in my mind, because he, some random guy, could easily control such strong abilities when they were given to him. Why is this? Frankly I think it's obvious that since Mob's outbursts correlating with loss of control is a frequent occurrence, we can assume emotions and psychic abilities are linked. Mob's just a middle school student, so of course he's bound to have trouble, but Reigen is so emotionally mature/intelligent, even compared to many adults, that it only makes sense he would have a strong grasp on psychic powers, no matter how strong. Essentially his ideal of psychic powers not being more than a character feature, manifested directly into them holding the same trivial importance to him as he views them normally, allowing for perfect control. Self Actualization I guess would be the term. He instilled this virtue in Mob, which meant that once Mob confronted the trauma of past outbursts, and ongoing trauma of worrying about the next one, putting an end to holding his emotions in, he could carry this mentality with him, internalizing the good his powers have brought to him over the bad and returning to being his full self again. Basically TL;DR, Reigen is the perfect mentor to Mob not only because of who he is as a person, but his skill-set as a (fake) psychic.

Reigen is the Devil social link/confidant arcana if this was Persona. He's a total parody of the psychic conman. Instead of conning people out of their money by feeling out their anxiety about spirits and taking advantage using those weaknesses, he's a conman who finds those with needless anxiety about spirits and cons them into mentally believing that they are cured by changing their cognition with psychological and therapeutic techniques. Reigen's a great guy who just wants you to believe in yourself and do the right thing (and Mob is there for the real shit). Mob ends up surpassing his own teacher and decides to find his own course in life, but he's grateful to Reigen-- even if Reigen lied, Mob could still see a good heart the whole time shining underneath like a dusty nickel. Reigen is the kind of guy who knows how to manipulate people but he uses his powers for good so it's a bit gray area at times, especially when it comes to Mob's pay. He's the kind of character that could only really work in fiction.

It is not his fault that he's alone and as an adult you can't just go and make friends. While other characters would try to sabotage their friend Reigen instead does all he can and that is to work his ASS off to be as good as he can and to help as much people as he can in his job, and to succeed without his student! I'd love to see your thoughts on the anime original Hot Springs OVA. I love what it added for Serizawa and how Reigen acts about his time loop hell train adventure.
@swampcryptid2 жыл бұрын
Ong I LOVE the hot springs ova it’s so funny and I love especially how it characterized Serizawa. It’s honestly very funny bc it’s played as a joke while Reigen goes through his own Mogami-esque existential terror. All while we get some nice well-deserved filler with Mob and friends it’s so good

As you can see from my profile picture, I’m so normal about Reigen!! I haven’t finished the anime yet so I can only watch the first 25 minutes of the video but I love the way you pointed out the symbolism of light used in the separation arc, I would’ve never thought of that!

6:57 the funny part is if your like me and you watch till the end of the credits you get a peek of the next episode and its usually Reagan subtly talking about the gist of the next episode but instead and the end he says that he’s the owner of claw convincing me

I think its interesting when you examine why mob is so powerful. It may be me connecting dots where there arent any, but it also is true for Serizawa as well. It comes from when Dimple is explaining how to increase his psychic powers by doing something you're deeply ashamed of etc. For mob and Serizawa they are afraid of their psychic powers themselves, and try to hide not only them, but in mob's case his emotions as well. They live / lived in a constant state of fear over who they were fundamentally for years. Ritsu's power exploded after days/weeks.

THIS IS A RLLY GOOD VIDEO! one scene id like to bring up that gets me thinking abt his character is the scene they removed from the latest episode, but it's after mob leaves to go confess to tsubomi! Reigen n Serizawa are left alone and Reigen brings up how Tsubomi and Mob can exist without distoring eachother, and that he wants to become a partner like that to Serizawa. This is right after he discusses how pessimistic he is about people liking him for his true self, and that he believes anybody would reject him knowing his true self. I think this scene is important because it really does establish his views on himself and also the narrative that everyone has a version of themself that they dont like. Also (THIS IS JUST MY INTERPERTATION UR WELCOME TO DISAGREE!) this scene very much comes off as Reigen knowing that Tsubomi doesn't like Mob back the way he likes her, but it's ok because he knows that even knowing Mob's true self and feelings, her view on him won't change and she'd still like to be friends with him, even if she doesn't like him romantically. And this very much reads as Reigen wanting Serizawa to know who he truly is and his feelings about Serizawa (whether u interpert than as romantic or platonic is up to u!! pop off serirei likers), without that distorting their relationship. Especially considering that he very much hates his true self but wants it to at least be known to someone, where their relationship will stay the same despite it. (kinda showing his struggle with vulnerability but wanting it badly, if that makes sense!) idk thats how the scene reads to me :]! And I thought it was a really interesting one that says a lot about him.

Thanks for the in depth comment, I totally agree with you on a lot of these points!! Tbh I really only remembered that scene after it was animated, but by that point I was already editing the video lol. I do think I could have said a lot more about Reigen’s feelings about his identity and stuff, and his perception of himself compared to how others see him, but oh well. The distortion line always confused me a little if I’m being honest, but I think your interpretation is really good. Whether it refers to his desire to have a more intimate relationship with anyone in general or with Serizawa specifically, it definitely highlights an element of his loneliness that we don’t see a lot of.

I know it's been a year and this likely won't be seen like ever, but I think there's an additional meaning to Reigen taking off his shoes. It's so that, even if he were to die due to Shigeyo, anyone who found his body would put it to suicide and not get Mob in any trouble

woof a mob vid sounds pretty intimidating lol. maybe one day, but if i make a mob psycho video in the near future then it'll probably be about ritsu and teru. their characterization is a lot more subtle and i think it would be fun to explore!

Honestly having the final major confrontation be between Mob ( who's out of control ) and Regan was the best way the show could've possibly ended. It really put all the themes of the series together. Not only is the ultimate culmination of their relationship, but in the end the only person who could stop Mob's overwhelming an unimaginable psychic powers was the only major character in the story who didn't have any powers at all. Having powers isn't ever what made Mob special, his heart and his kind nature made him special and in that same vein Regan was never lesser or less capable because he didn't have powers his own heart and his ability to always know exactly what to say were what made him special. It's a perfect conclusion.

I LOVE VIDEO ESSAYS OMG! On a less broad note, I don't really have much to say about Reigen, as you did a wonderful job of making a cohesive and well-written breakdown of his character and growth throughout the series; however, I love commenting on fan media that I find myself thoroughly enjoying. The first thing I would like to say is that your tempo and depth of explanation are very well balanced :] I never really felt like anything throughout this video was drawn out or skimmed over too fast. I love you actually bringing in the visual elements of how lighting is used as symbolism throughout the separation arc as I feel a lot of people will stray away from things as nuanced as that because they don't want to sound like an English teacher commenting on colour theory lol. The minimal inclusion of clips from the show directly also give your personal voice as the 'author' of the video a chance to fully exist, rather than feeling like a compilation video with some commentary. I also wanted to note that I don't know if you used your usual cadence for this video or not but either way, you made a wonderful narrator, keeping your words clear without sounding slow or condescending. Anyways, I'm sorry if I went to into depth, I rant like this to my friends about fanfiction writing/authors as well, I just enjoy breaking down what parts of a media I like and what makes it entertaining/enjoyable. (feel free to delete this comment should you decide it makes you uncomfortable or reads strangely, I just wanted to get my thoughts in writing :] )

I mean, when Reigen got popular for infamy on the internet is probably something that's common in Japan because afaik there have been cases where those who express a rather outlandish behaviour or come off as a sham won't be taken seriously and may be turned into memes is actually somewhat true. Take 2chan, 4chan and even Twitter for example [I know the latter are mostly western but it still holds weight.] Cancel culture is both real and unavoidable.
