I dare say that it's impossible to sound bad with this guitar even if you play bad. The irresistible tone that comes through is the most gratifying sound of any guitar made.

I think you are spot on with your "most gratifying" description. I am so fortunate to own a fairly small (6) collection of awesome guitars I have been able to accumulate through 50 years of saving for or trading for. Gibsons, Guild, Adamas. Even a D45. I love and play them all. But the one that always puts the biggest smile on my face is my 2002 '53 Reissue SJ 200. I could never part with it.

I don't have one. Instead, I have a 1996 Guild JF55 which is great Jumbo acoustic and many people have told me, in no way inferior to the Gibson. All the same, I never had the chance to compare it with a J200. Which may be a good thing because if the Gibson sounds much better to me, I 'll be sad. There is absolutely no way I can ever afford to buy something that expensive, again.

There was recent NYT a article about how guitar sales had skyrocketed during this plague. The quality and diversity of the instruments made now is literally fantastic. Whether everyone needs one is another matter. I played one (maple)at our local store. Very resonant and great projection, but too large for me at this stage of the game. As far as price goes, in the late sixties, I worked overtime on construction for months to save to buy a Gibson Hummingbird. 50 plus years later it is still with me. Even with a few setups along the way , the “annuity” cost has been about 10 bucks a year. The latest Gibson models are an even better value.

Dang. I bet the Hummingbird still sounds as good, if not way better than the day you were finally able to purchase it. I rlly want a D-28, older j-45 or A Waterloo for my next guitar but next guitar is gonna be earned via playing my music live and I’m pretty jacked for the day. I think everyone having an instrument is a good thing, especially if they buy rlly nice ones, realize they don’t have time anymore and sell the them for cheaper than they bought it. lol.

I have a Martin, Taylor and F-hole Eastman, and they’re all great guitars. It took me a long time to first, find one that wasn’t sold by the next day, but 15 years later, I finally was able to get/afford one from The Music Villa in Bozeman Montana. Mine is a 1957 reissue blonde custom. They are very pricey, but the sound is amazing. It’s my new favorite. For those of you waiting/wanting to get one, you won’t be disappointed. Words of hard learned wisdom here, “DO NOT LEAVE YOUR HEADSTOCK TUNER CLIPPED ON WHEN PUTTING IT AWAY”!! The finish is Nitrocellulose lacquer, and it will react to the rubber on the tuner. It was a Snark by the way. Anyway, it melted into the lacquer and now I’m dealing with how to fix it. ☹️ None of my other guitars have had this issue. I wish Gibson or the guys at Music Villa would have warned me about this. But don’t let this stop you from getting one! They’re iconic sounding guitars with a lotta great history from famous players over the years. They’ve also been used on thousands of great recordings and hit songs!

Reading some of the comments regarding the obviously unaffordable price of this guitars for most people, may I respectfully suggest you guys try the Epiphone version? $499. It doesn’t sound like this Gibsons, admittedly, but it’s not that different. It does not sound 10% . Companies have flagship products. Aspirational. For wealthy people and pros. But Gibson has no frills versions (expensive, but way less than the standard) that sound pretty much the same (just like those fancy ones with the inlays sound no better than the ones played here). And the Epiphone’s are all right. My ¢2.

I tried one about the second year I started playing in the early 90's and saw the J-200 as a dream for later. Over a decade later, I used gig money I'd saved for a while and purchased a new blonde in Albuquerque. When they handed it over the counter to me, tears streamed down my cheeks. I was holding The Holy Grail. That was January of 2008, sixteen years ago. I gigged with it last night and am still overjoyed playing it. Playing it at tonight's gig too. The backup is an ebony EJ-200 (Epiphone) which sounds almost as good. Holy Grail, really, I mean it.

Ok, here’s my must have acoustics at this point, granted it’s currently ordered based on affordability. A Martin Dread (likely mahogany), a J-45, and then a J-200. They are all big for me, but the tone just grabs you and makes you convince yourself that you will grow into it. I love my 000-15SM, but if you were to recommend an island guitar between the Dread, the 45 and the 200, what would you choose?

I did buy one of thees 5 yrs ago an its huge. I am facinated by guitars and now have 37. The Gibson is beautful and sounds nice but not practical for some one as little as me. The quality an finish is super, but havin said that i have a Dean guitar covered in qilted ash with ivory/plastic linings on the body and fret bord, the finish is so beautiful....and it was made in China. I have bort my guitars from Thomann in Germany, except for some S/H ones i bort in England. The guitar i use most is my Thomanns Harley Benton travel acoustic guitar in mahogany, it sounds fantastic and looks nice, it about the same size as my baby Martin guitar. I hav recently bort a Harley Benton bass copy of a Rikkenbacher. i do not know if i can stop buying guitars, but one thing i have leerned is that the most expensive ones are not the best. I have a very old Japanese strat copy made in the 1970's by Mi. It is as good as the Fender strat cos i hav one of thees as well...wich i am goin to sell along wiv my Bitish made Gordon Smith...the end...ps. I wish Harley Benton guitars wer being made wen i started buying guitars cos i wood never ever hav bort my Gibson.

For studio recordings in song mixes , Martins can have that thick full sound too. And Gibsons can sound thin. I would say own maybe 2 or 3 acoustics for studio work and see which one fits the song the best. If on a budget, play the one that’s most comfortable.

I couldn't believe, because it is so reasonably priced, that the Martin 000-15 was the best guitar over and over when I toured Sweden and played the coolest acoustic guitars in many guitar shops. One out of three spoke to me extra, and I bought that very one. That was then when I was looking for my main thing. Ok I hear some videos that say that the SJ00 is the nicer one and the SJ stood for super jumbo, and the J200 is plainer one. But then I see some that the J200 is the nicer one is the, and the SJ200 is the studio. Which is it? I need to know.

There is no difference..... the official name is SJ-200 but often times we just call it a J-200. It's the same guitar. A studio model does have less inlays, bindings etc...

Would be great to sit in a room and play all the different J200. Only when the planets align or if you live in Bozeman Montana. 😎

I purchased one about 10 years ago and sold it did not like at all.My personal opinion. I’ve had other Gibson acoustic guitars that I’ve liked far more.

Checked guitars are the best. My grandfather had a 72 D-28 that spent a lot of time being abused and it’s gorgeous

@@hotlov72 well I have a brand new Harley, every gun I’ve ever wanted, a $16000 Lionel collection, and a brand new Martin HD-28 (Just to name a few of my many hobbies). Tell me again how I get little in return? Here’s a piece of advice that schools don’t teach you. Get into trades and don’t dump $50,000 on a college education you probably will go nowhere with. Blame yourself before you start wanting communism in the USA

I have wanted a J200 since I first heard Pete Townsend play one on “Behind Blue Eyes”... 50 years later, I can actually afford one. But hard to justify... I won’t buy a guitar that I can’t take to a gig or open mic, and let other musicians play... maybe I’ll buy two Guild USA working musician guitars, an F40 Jumbo, PLUS, a D20 all mahogany dreadnought. After installing Baggs Anthem pickups on both, I will still have $1500 leftover, compared to the price of a single J200 original... donate the xtra $1500 to my granddaughter’s college fund...

If when i have Gibson , i wont be lending" it out to others, ive had 2 Guilds dropped by "hot shot" guys that wanted to "check them out" in some public place. With J200 i will say"no", I'll risk being rude.

While that'd be nice, J200s have never been built with the intention for the model to be affordable and available for everyone.
