Why Everything Everywhere All At Once Won Best Picture

Everything Everywhere All At Once explained that the meaning of life is beautifully simple. Many see the meaning of life as the process of attaining or achieving something extraordinary; whilst others believe that there is no greater meaning to life whatsoever. Everything Everywhere All At Once doesn’t fall into either of these camps, and instead tells us that meaning can be found, not in any substantial thing, but in our everyday relationships to each other.

yeah it's annoying how when the film first came out, so many people agreed that it was one of the best films ever made. And then when the film got more popular, it's suddenly "overrated." I've also seen people calling the Oscars woke for picking this movie. The word woke has completely lost its meaning by now. Is EEAAO the best movie of the year. I do think so yes, but film is ultimately subjective, which makes arguments surrounding it meaningless. I'm just happy that the Oscars picked a good and original movie this year. Totally!! I have watched critic after critic who rated the movie highly, but qualified that score with 'oh, but it shouldn't have swept the Oscars! Poor Banshees! Poor Elvis! Cate Blanchett! Viola Davis! You are too full of yourself if your 'expertise' requires that awards for Oscars movies should be allocated as only you prescribe. They won Best Director by the *Directors Guild* themselves! the toughest audience other than SAG, which they also won. I feel neutral for those who hated the movie and want to run around commenting from the rooftops. There are others who wanted the emotional, incredible experience they watched millions of people have, but couldn't get there through the absurdism. We are all different people with diffuse life experiences. That's okay. But it irks me when so-called 'film critics' act childish and petulant.I have recommended this film much and have noticed that the friends/family that 'didn't like' or 'didn't get' the film, are either in a negative, distracted state and couldn't even *see* the film, are controlling, 'Type A' folks, who are turned off when a narrative doesn't fit into a perfect box that they expect or people who aren't particularly empathetic. All of this is fine. There are plenty of Oscar movies I rolled my eyes at, or gasped in bewilderment at how it could win. It's all good. I choose to see those irritations through Waymond's eyes. "Be kind. Especially when we don't know what's going on."👀

I give the credit to Yeoh. She should’ve won an Oscar, for Crouching Tiger, over Julia Roberts’ Erin Brockavich, or even if one would call the role supporting, because of Zhang Ziyi(not sure my spelling), she deserved a nom. It was a stacked year for supporting actress if I remember correctly. Jolie won for Girl, Interrupted, and I know Chloe Sevigny was nominated, for Boys Don’t Cry. Can’t remember anyone else who had a performance in a movie that would’ve been equal. She is the reason the scenes with Chow Yun-Fat, work so well. Her showing genuine happiness for seeing him, and just speaking, to his guarded until the end, character. Her scenes with the young character, are equally excellent, as she both protects her, and shows her that the respect, and the ability to achieve it, she’s using a shortcut to get, will be her undoing. The sadness when it’s the undoing of her love, who had only just opened up to her, after so many years wasted, is all in her face. So, yeah on Yeoh, and the director for directing her, though she’s a pro, which is why I say without her, it just doesn’t work the same. It’s a very well cast film, although the daughter is a weak link in points, as I just don’t buy her as the powerful version, in some scenes, with the wardrobe and makeup. But, that’s getting nit picky.

In addition to everything @@CorbCorbin said, this film takes a lot of its visual and editorial style from short-form social media videos. Pivoting in an instant is something we've all learned to accept, with short videos. This film reuses that filmic style to great effect. If you draw a plot of people's reaction to EEAAO, and their participation in social media, even as passive consumers, I am sure that we would see a positive correlation. And it's not necessarily age related, as I know people in their 60s and 70s that both get social media and EEAAO. But the ones that don't get social media tend to not get EEAAO.

I do not know any film that tries to be so many genres and actually succeeds at each of them. As a family drama, it works. As a comedy, its funny. As an action movie, its decent, it has very creative fight scenes. As a science fiction, its very original. Yes I know the concept of the multiverse has long been tackled in other movies, but its take on it is something unseen before. The parallel universe is not just there for the sake of being there. Each universe presented contributed to the movies Philosophical message. It had memorable performances, and very imaginative story telling. What else can you ask for?

People in the comments are mad. It’s okay that some people don’t like or don’t get this movie. I don’t think it’s meant to be liked by everyone. For me it’s a very special film. The first time I watched it I cried and laughed and cried a lot more. And then the same thing happened the next 5 times I watched the movie. It spoke to me on a deep level of hurt and pain, but most of all, hope when it seems like there’s none. There are artistic reasons to love this film and there are emotional ones (amongst many other reasons.) For me it was very emotional. If this movie had to be explained to you, then no you don’t get it and you probably won’t, and that’s just okay. There’s really no reason for those of us to explain to those who didn’t enjoy the film or have no interest in the film “why” it’s good. Not everyone needs to love or even like this film.

Action/comedy genre films don't win Oscars (or even get nominated). EEAAO broke the glass ceiling by combining absurd/silly action, humour and philosophical meaning of family values. Part 1 "Everything" sets the stage for the multi-verse concept and multiple ideal lifepaths for Evelyn in the most absurd and silly way possible. Part 2 "Everywhere" explores the psychological and philosophical impact of human relationships. Part 3 "All At Once" is the result of accepting and loving oneself in order to create and maintain a happy life. If money was everything, then we wouldn't see so many Hollywood celebrities take their own lives. There's got to be a deeper meaning in life. The "rock scene" shows that our lives is so "small and stupid" in comparison to the universe. Don't take it too seriously and enjoy the "small speck of time" we have on this planet.

This is not an absurdist or surrealist film. Instead, like the novels of Kurt Vonnegut, it uses absurdist/surrealist devices to disorient the audience, and then thoroughly disarm them from their preconceptions and expectations about where the narrative is going. As Vonnegut demonstrated in numerous novels (eg. Slaughterhouse 5, Cats Cradle, Breakfast of CHampions) this makes the impact of the actual message FAR more profound. EEAAO is not the first film to attempt this narrative device, but it is certainly the only film I know of where it actually worked across the board (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a possible exception within a far more limited narrative message).

It was helpful to me to see this movie portraying generational trauma as the primary antagonist / nihilistic force. Your “Relationships” chapter gets at this as well; although family, tradition, and culture is something that seeks to survive through space and time, through its many manifestations across universes, it can also function as an excluding, repressive force that fractures relationships and empathy between generations. I think this was best exemplified in the scene where the grandfather tells Evelyn to “let her go” when Joy/Jobu seeks to enter the nothingness of the everything bagel and Evelyn is figuring out what to do to stop Joy from leaving her. The multiverse, multi-genre, multi-generational depiction of this struggle is what felt so creative

Like one small part where she ran with the chopsticks and got her eye poke out in the other alternate universe (it is something we were told as kids not to RUN WITH YOUR CHOPSTICKS LOL), the part where they become rich but they did not find the love as it is a homage to Wong Kar-wai's mood for love. How the fighting were alot feels like from those Hong kong movies when watching as a child. And at least the Chinese and Cantonese they were speaking are not the broken kind of speaking or sound weird that normally you hear in some of the Hollywood movies, it is very smooth as they are very fluent in it. For most of the American Chinese movies I have seen so far, I really like how it is done to tell the story on both of the parent's problem and the child's problem too.

this movie deserves every single praise it has gotten. the message(s) it delivers have been taught so many times through so many different mediums, and yet this movie made it so refreshing and heart touching. to fight for the things that do ultimately matter- to love and embrace. I have never sobbed so intensely IN the theater before watching this film. it broke my heart into little pieces and stitched it back up again and again. this was a punch to the gut in the best way. I watched it a 2nd time at home literally earlier tonight and cried just as hard if not harder than the first watch. just an absolutely wonderful masterpiece.

Ok I just rewatched the movie, it was far more in-depth than my first watch, you can concentrate on other things you missed or didn't pay attention to and there's alot to be reseen. Its just amazing, you can tell it was by care, when just some of the ideas in particular scenes makes you go excited, imagine crafting the visuals and tone from scratch. I watched it way back when everyone was busy watching MOM, I'm glad I'm in this universe.

"Meaning can be found in our everyday relationships to each other." Here is an excerpt from the writings of Marshall Vian Summers about our role in the world, our purpose. "You have come into the world at a crucial time. You have come to serve the world in its present needs. You have come to prepare for future generations... you are working for the present and for the future. You are working for the life that you will live and for lives that will follow yours...Weaving your life with other lives in a very specific way, it is meant to uplift you and all with whom you come in contact. The Plan is greater than your personal ambition, and only your personal ambition can cloud your vision of what you must do.."(MVS, Steps to Knowledge)

This is the best reading of the movie I could find. In the face of the threat of nihilism and losing yourself and identity to that threat, the main character finds meaning in kindness, loving the people around you and cherishing life as it is. It reminded me also of Tolstoy (again a non-Western thinker) and his philosophy about the meaning of life. It is simply beautiful. Also when Joy thinks her mom wants to stay, because she enjoys the pleasure of being this or that and laughs at her, she is also laughing at the idea of hedonism. Because it turns out to be as meaningless as everything else.

Yeah…i Like a few things about this film, overall I didn’t enjoy the delivery at all. I imagine that if it were more serious and swapped between universes less that I would have enjoyed it a lot more. And I disagree that something is wrong with someone because they don’t like what you like. That’s one of the craziest things to say, and says more about you than anyone else.
@Intranetusa
@Intranetusa Жыл бұрын
 @VonJay - This film couldn't have been more serious because the film is an absurdist comedy where one of its core philosophies is absurdism. It's supposed to be funny, crazy, bizzare, and the events should not be taken literally/seriously (most of what happens in the movie violates the laws of physics). I do agree that there is nothing wrong with people for simply not liking a movie. People didn't like classics like The Godfather, Shawshank, 2001 A Space Odyssey, or The Dark Knight either due to personal tastes.

If anything can be said to be the "key" to winning Best Picture these days, it's empathy and representation of underrepresented communities. A gay working-class African-American boy in Moonlight. A mute woman who falls in love with a "monster" in The Shape of Water. An interracial professional relationship which becomes a friendship in Green Book. A poverty-ridden Korean family in Parasite. The Nomads in Nomadland. A Deaf family in CODA. An immigrant family with a queer daughter in Everything Everywhere All At Once. And in all of those very different movies, characters from different worlds and with different interests learn to appreciate each other and open themselves up to other perspectives. If you want to predict the next winner, the trick is to look for which film gives the warm-and-fuzzy feeling of people putting aside their differences and choosing love.

In a world of increasing polarization, ideology wars, decreasing attention spans, increasingly more apathy, and communication occurring through screens & less through face-to-face...I would say that it's less of commentary on the academy and more of a commentary of what should be prioritized prior, during, and after the dust of conflict settles

Great analysis of the emotional core of the movie!!! So true, the whole sci-fi aspect of the film covers a mother-daughter relationship. If the mother doesn't break the cycle in that whole adventure, Joy could have killed herself and end their family. The film is literally about nothing and everything at the same time!! Thanx!!!

It's absurd that people are complaining it shouldn't have won. Honestly, it was fantastic. In any year, you will have Tar or a handful of movies of similar quality and seriousness competing for the Best Picture, but how often do you get something this profound yet this silly? EEAAO is a comedy, an action movie and a science-fiction fantasy film rolled all into one. Each one of those is a black mark against a movie when it comes to Best Picture voting. Putting all of them together should be a sure recipe for a "thanks but no thanks" from the Academy, but it does all of that in such a refreshing way that it's not hard to see why it won. This is the ratatouille at the end of Ratatouille. A dish so cheap yet so well done that you have to sit back and wonder at why nobody else is doing it this way.

Apart from the yin and yang symbolism of the googly eye and the bagel, i felt that her putting the googly eye on her forehead was a powerful metaphor for the 3rd eye, an awakening of her inner self. It's a common concept in eastern religions where most deities have a 3rd eye which denotes enlightenment
