My husband was very skeptical of the auger. He said are ground is too hard for something like that. It hasn't rained it won't work. Well, he put it in the drill and was very impressed. In fact he wouldn't hand it over. He said "Look at this! " And yea I gave him a look. 🙄So hopefully I will finish the tulips and the hyacinth today. 😳 Great tool, I would highly suggest. 🔥

😅 let him drill out as many holes as he wants. Imagine how many you can get planted. I have too many rocks to even try and drill. I set out so many things this past Spring and rocks are a problem. All sizes coming from one hole being dug.

@@theoneandonly1158I’ve got a LOT of clay in our NE TN soil along with tons of rocks and roots (our yard used to be a cow field, so was never tilled or cleaned up for crops). I haven’t gotten Laura’s long versions yet because I already had two of the original short Power Planter augers and they just won’t die! 😀 The first year I dug holes and planted 1200 bulbs in two days! I’d bet they would work, esp if you were using a Dewalt drill. Just be sure to set it up per the power planter website or however garden answer says - usually take it off the screw setting because that won’t stop with too much resistance like setting it on a number will.

This is how I was taught when studying horticulture: a nursery is where new plants are propagated. A garden centre is a retail outlet that sells plants. If a nursery has a public retail section, you can call it a garden centre or a nursery. But you can't call a garden centre a nursery if it doesn't propagate new plants (by cuttings, seed sprouting, grafting etc) 😊

We drove to Portland from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in September this year. After watching you every morning, but Saturdays, I made sure to include a trip to Ontario to see Andrew’s and hopefully meet your mom or Monica. Unfortunately , it was Sunday when we drive through to Boise. We drove back the next morning to find out the family takes Mondays off!! We had some great conversations with the staff that was working. What a lot of house plants to water!!! I am the proud owner of a Garden Answer kneeling pad and a Dram wand. I also wanted to visit A’Tavola restaurant in Boise, but they are closed on Mondays!!🤣 We did get to the Antique Mall which was mind-blowing! Thanks for adding so much fun to my mornings!

In the UK the difference tends to be that garden centres sell plants etc but nurseries grow plants from scratch to then sell on.

We are one of the last small farms standing within a mile of the city limits. I have come home to find people picnic-ing on the property, one person (instead of taking the drive way) go willy-nilly across the field to end up axle deep in the freshly plowed vegetable garden and numerous individuals thinking our driveway is a public road. We put up a gate and large rocks on either side. It helps, but some see it more as a challenge. 🤪Recently I came home, mid day, to find a car parked directly in front of the gate, like they were waiting for it to open. Both occupants were in a completely reclined position, just chillin'. People never cease to amaze me. It has left us with many a story to charm our invited guests!🤣 I can't imagine how challenging it must get to guard your privacy.

When you were speaking about people driving into your trees and fences it reminded me of when I was a kid on the farm in Nyssa (very near where Laura and Aaron live). Our farmhouse and yard was located on the corner of a in intersection of two country roads. Not a lot of traffic out there, but what there was traveled fast. And when they were turning, they would cut the corner of our lawn quite often. That’s how we got a rock garden on that corner. Placed some pretty big boulders there. It fixed the problem and looked pretty good, too.

Can we have Aaron do a "Tree Tour"? He could include tips for planting as well as tree stats. I live in Western North Carolina and we have been devastated by Hurricane Helene. It took out 14 of our huge red oak trees and through clearing brush, most of our grass is gone. We are planning to redo our entire yard. I realize we are in different climates but I would still like to hear Aaron's information on your trees. Also, please pray for our area. We have had several deaths and many people's homes were washed away. Thank you for your information.

He has disposed of so many things because they serve him no further purpose. Where I am well, I might need this or this at some time...lol. Can't wait to see the gate, and Christmas wreaths on it!! Here in Wisconsin, we say Garden Center, I think because they also sell gifts etc., anything related to gardening. We also say plant container vs. can. I think it's fantastic that "Andrews" is offering online purchases. Your parents have such a beautiful selection of gifts, etc. so separate from you. I fully support and love you all!!! Hope I'm around long enough to see your trees and future visions mature. Laura, I'm 72 now, and believe me I totally understand how much longer it takes to do things! It's like age suddenly catches you, and I'm not liking it at all!! I keep trying to do things as I did, that's not working to well...HaHaHa! Love you all, God Bless!

You both have convinced me that if a plant struggles or if it’s in the wrong place, move it or toss it. It actually feels good. During the pandemic, you both inspired me so much. I would go out in my garden and make it bigger. Years ago, my thought was oh just bark mulch it. I can’t water that much. Now there’s a brick walkway. The garden is bigger more beautiful and I’m happier. ❤️

Totally hear you on protecting your driveway, fences, and yard from terrible drivers! We now live on a well-traveled road in the country and installed a circular drive, not only for our ease of use, in order to not back up onto a potentially dangerous spot, but for others doing delivery also, however, they seem to want to live dangerously and back up anyway. 🤷🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️ At our previous home, we had a large driveway for people to use, and somehow were still having people using our lawn...until the large rocks were installed. It is frustrating and we feel your pain! Really hope you'll bring us along as you solve this issue. Love how you two work together ~ you are a blessing to us!

In our area (Eastern Canada) we tend to call the box store “garden centers” (they are usually seasonal and only open for a short period of time and the local business that specializes in landscaping and selling plants “nurseries”. If that makes any sense. Also we call the plant containers pots, not cans. It’s always interesting to see how every region is different wether it’s accents or words we use.

Minnesota here and we say nursery and garden center both but nurseries are usually larger shrub and tree places and more outdoorsy settings . Cans is because in the business the containers used to actually be metal cans for some sized plants before plastics were pervasive.

We live in a suburban development and a neighbor on the corner had cars come around the corner too fast three times in the first year. They crossed his lawn, which was about forty feet deep and smashed into his house. After the third time, he brought in a lot of dirt to make his front yard perfectly flat and had a two foot tall brick wall put all around from his driveway to the back of his house. That stops the speeders.

I'll be looking for it. Need more things in my gardens thar can take care of themselves. I'm seventy an a new amputee from a rare cancer leiomyosarcoma I had in my ankle of all things. Went thru much this year. I planted so many things this Spring, fir I knew I would be having multiple surgeries come August. I tried to save myself from having an amputation tho that's the first recommendation. I went for limb sparing surgery, needless to say it didn't go well,it failed. Now in a wheelchair but at least I can get around. Cook and do a few things. Back to driving. It was my left foot so there are things to be grateful for. Prosthetic fitting is next. Just having to wait on the side the plastic surgeon cut up to do his thing to save my foot,it's taking longer for that side to heal. Hoping I can get out by next Spring and do my gardening. I have cut grass once since my amputation I have a riding mower. It needed it badly. Always been active, but this year between 5 weeks of radiation all the going to a Dr that's hours away, because I needed a special orthopedic Dr. has been tiring. The month of July was many 250 miles round trips for tests an imaging. Looking to see if cancer had spread to any other part of my body if so, surgery was off,no need to try. I'm thru tho. No more tests looking for cancer, only treatment is cut it out. I'll just live my life until I can't. Life isn't spending precious time driving hundreds of miles, seeing multiple Dr's. An when it's so rare you don't get the best treatment anyway. You really have to literally move to another state. If I were very young yes I would try. But not now.Something is going to take us at some point in time. I feel pretty good most days. Just hard mentally. One thing I have learned you git to get up,I knew that from nursing skills. Get up,even if you think you can't, do it. I had to,an I'm glad I did. Had nurses come to house, but only for about thirty minutes Physical therapy then a wound care nurse. I have a walker that rolls,I put my knee in it and push away, I use it for certain tasks. But I use wheelchair also. But you git to use your good leg, or loose the muscle in it. You figure things out when you're alone. Yes daughter came everyday, trying to help. Job new home, kids into school and sports, I can't and don't expect her to loose her job, take away from her kids, her husband. I've made it this far. I'm grateful. I cook my food, thank God,cause daughter bringing frozen meals and to go food delivered was getting yuck. She lives an hour away, bless her she came everyday for a week after each surgery and there were four from August thru September. Long boring story. But it's Sunday, drizzling rain in Central Georgia. It's going to be a long day.

When we were building our home 20 years ago, we had to have a culvert installed at the start of the driveway. The culvert was not buried deep enough and sure enough delivery trucks broke the culvert and there was a large sharp piece of metal protruding out of the ground. It was several days before we could get it corrected and a new culvert installed… correctly. We marked it clearly, as a precaution!!!! Several people had been using our driveway to turn around when they missed the street next to the house. You could hear them scraping the bottom of their car as they pulled in and backed out. I’m sure damage was done to their car for their carelessness.

I'm so glad you gave a little explanation on planting widths. I've been amazed by neighbors who buy lots of arborvitaes to use for privacy and then plant them 6 inches from my property, usually a fence or in one instance a walkway. I had to get mad at the neighbor with the pathway planting, taking a tape measure and an info sheet on how wide they get to show my pathway would become unusable. It's my only way to get to my backyard and the space between the two houses is very narrow. Fortunately, they moved them back. A few years later new owners removed them completely. They also planted a California lilac about 6 inches from their mailbox. Years later the postman is always getting on the new owners for having to deliver mail through a forest of branches.

25:00 Root flare. Many think a wide, flaring root base is elegant and adds the look of age and stability to your tree. When you strip off the soil and expose more vertical roots (like when the stock has been planted from a cutting so the roots emerge from one place) it looks like an elephant foot--to be avoided. When stock has been grafted, in some growing zones, the graft is placed below the soil level to protect the joint from freezing, and in some it is placed higher to prevent suckering. If roots are really tangled and crossing at the base (often a symptom of having been grown in a pot), it may be best to expose those and prune them so they don't choke out the tree. With lindens (or basswoods), they definitely sucker from the base if planted too high or damaged by a mower, scuffed or wire-wrapped. An important key is to not allow soil or mulch to ride up the trunk (think volcano cones of mulch around parking lot trees). The mulch belongs in a circle around the base of the tree, with the trunk exposed, to prevent bark rot, rooting above the soil plane, and it looks better. Over time, raking away from the trunk will allow the natural root flare to become apparent.

I’m sure many viewers, like me, never heard the term “can” until following Garden Answer. In Michigan, it’s a pot or container.

When we put in our gravel we used the stone chip with “fines” and pack it with a plate compactor we bought at Harbor Freight. The fines act as a cement over time and create a very nice walkway.

About the cans, the plants used to be all potted in cans. When I started working the nursery business back in 1973 plants were all in cans. We had a can cutter that we would slide down either side of the pot so the customer could get the plant out of the can.

I’m a native Tennessean and we call them nurseries or greenhouses, also cans for the plastic containers since pots sounds like the permanent ones. I’ve lived in Kentucky and Ohio and nursery works there as well. I think it’s actually apropos - you’re just growing plants instead of people! 🌺

Yes plant nurseries is a thing. I have always called them nursery. Samantha’s head going behind the table cracked me up. Ohh the disadvantages for short people! 😂😂 I am pretty positive that you did not give the names of those trees in the video. I am so glad you all are so blessed with your warehouse and the success of your videos have helped your family. I love your videos. Please remember as you continue to succeed to give the glory to God because what He gives, He can take away. ❤❤ God bless you all.

I’m in Southern California, in Zone 10a. In a one-year-old, new landscape, I had to have someone remove the two yarrow plants that were sending out runners like crazy! I guess they were happy in that planting bed! The baby yarrows appeared in/through other dense plants. So many! Thankful you don’t have that problem. They are a very pretty plant!

All of the places that sell plants and flowers around me are ALL called in Nurseries. It’s actually in their name most of the time. I shop garden centers/nurseries ALL over the state of Illinois and into Missouri. Whatever you call it, we know what you’re talking about! I had not heard the term ‘nursery can” before your channel, but I like the term and have adopted it because it differentiates my decorative pots from what the plants come in. Keep doing your thing, most of us will adjust to the regional semantics .

Yarrow is sometimes used as a lawn replacement in areas that are difficult to grow. In my area(very hot and dry) Yarrow starts to grow in the fall when it cools down and we get fall rains. That is when it spreads. It spreads by sending out runners.

Nurseries grown on plants for sale. Garden centers sell what they’ve been sent to the public. Pots are what plants are meant to be kept in, like what you put a house plant in or an outdoor container. Plant cans are the temporary containers you purchase them in. I’m in IN and that’s how I use the words.

It’s called root washing to wash the dirt off. This way you can cut out roots that are starting to circle to stop girdling and spread them out. It doesn’t shock the tree.

So much fun watching these recaps. I think it’s very regional. Pots for plants and garden center is a store that sells all gardening things. A nursery sells plants and frequently grow. IMO. From Michigan and now Florida. ❤❤❤ Another topic is the root ball… in our home that we had built a mature tree was in the front yard and I built a berm up around the trunk and planted hosta and other annuals and 45 years later that tree is still going strong. So I always wondered why everyone says don’t cover the flare. 😂😂

From all the research I have read, you got lucky with that tree. I’m glad you did, but I wouldn’t count on that result or recommend doing that to anyone working on or around their trees. The information I found says that piling up dirt and mulch around the trunk of a tree will eventually cause damage.

My understanding on root flares is that where the trunk meets the roots is the most vulnerable place to be infected by bad bacteria. So keeping soil away makes that less likely.

In my experience the difference between a garden center vs nursery is as follows: A nursery propagates and grow plants from seedlings to the desired size for sale. These can be wholesale or retail nurseries. A garden center brings in plants from nurseries to resell to the public, they don’t grow their own.

We use both terms, nursery and garden center, here in Alabama. Around here garden centers tend to carry more of the hardware gardeners need and a variety of plants and a nursery tends to focus more on the plants and usually have a larger variety.

As a child in the 1950’s in California, before the popularity of plastics, nursery plants mostly trees and shrubs, were grown in mainly 1, 5, and 15 gallon cans. You used long handled tin snips to cut down the sides of the can to remove the plant. Larger plants were boxed in wood boxes or balled in burlap. I can’t remember how small annuals were packed up because we grew those from seed. It would interest me to know the history of the plant nursery to garden center evolution through the ages.
