This video helped me realize that I am NOT, in fact, writing the downfall of a hero - I'm writing a villain origin story. It's significantly changed how I view my story now. You've made me realize that while I know the main character is/would have been a good person, the readers aren't really going to get to see her in that roll. The story picks up soon after she has a tough decision to make - one that sets her down a path that will eventually lead her to make increasingly more deplorable decisions as the book goes. The readers won't expierence a lot of her life before this inciting incident. They'll get a glimpse, sure, but I don't think it's enough for the readers to consider it a 'downfall' story. I'm not sure if this is a good or bad thing, but it is most certainly helpful!

I always loved fallen heroes because they show how close we are to becoming evil. Anakin, Revan and Siegfried are some of my favorite characters for this reason

I have similar things planned for Tartarus. Slowly he gets consumed by being an officer in the sentry legions. The war shapes him and by the time my book is playing Tartarus is cold, cruel and efficient. In general he isn’t a good person but bitter sweet with the people he cares about.

I can imagine any historical figure who was a freedom fighter becoming something like a "fallen hero" under the right (maybe wrong) situations, because there is a great difference between fighting and ruling. At least in those cases when they survive long enough to become rulers. Just take the example of Simon Bolívar in Venezuela, Porfirio Diaz in Mexico, Emperor Pedro I of Brazil and Robert Mugabe in Zimbabwe, just to say a few examples. They were extremely popular after the fight towards the independence that created their nations. However, they all followed an authoritarian path (if it was for the best or the worst, it is another question), and they ended their political careers under unfavorable interpretations of their respective legacies.
