As a black artist of 20 plus years, I’ve never felt the need to get support from friends and family! I didn’t become an artist to please others, I pursued my art and art career simply because it’s what I loved to do! It’s a huge misconception that we need support and acceptance as an artist from friends and family, in fact I believe it’s unfair of us to expect them to understand, because they never will and never can! There is only one person and one person only, who really needs to believe in you, and that’s you!

Tarra!!!! I LOVE this advice, and definitely what I needed to hear. While I am not currently selling my art, I share with friends and family on FB and often feel a bit disappointed none have ever either a) reposted my work to their feeds; and b) have never reached out to me to either buy my work or ask for me to paint something for them. Your exercise really opened my eyes to this conundrum - they simply aren't art people. None actively support artists - they don't buy art on the regular, nor share even favorite artists on their pages. The majority just view the art as a hobby, not something to invest in. I do need to find my tribe, and part of my issue is I don't go out of my way to connect with other artists or art lovers. As an introvert, I need to get over this. So, I have some goals to plan! P.S. I love your presence! Thank you for doing what you do - I feel like you gave me the biggest hug and encouraged me to keep moving forward. 🥰

Awww I’m glad this video found you. 💓 I’m glad you did the exercise and came to the realization that they’re just not art people. A lot of people just see art as something fun to do and aren’t aware of the benefits of practicing and viewing art. I’m an introvert too but getting out of my comfort zone and making friends with other artists is very important. The support/community is needed. Hugs to you 🤗

Just the title is pure gem ❤❤❤. Yesterday I had a discussion with my dad because I share a lot of my art with him, and I really have a good relationship with him. I'm used to do portrait painting, and charachters design but yesterday I share with him a still life and he said "don't scatter yourself". I'm a mulipassionate person... I AM SCATTERED. Like always (and I struggle with this because I can never make a choice, or find a style, or find who I am, as I am so many persons... ). This comment broke my heart because I felt misunderstood. I had a huge insomnia this night, thinking about my art "what am I gonna do, do I have to keep up ? I feel lonely, I do not have any style, I'm bad at painting, I don't know what to do anymore... bla bla bla". I read the title of your video. And just the title made me feel better. Thanks for that?
@tarralu6 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for sharing. You’re not alone. I’m multipassionate person as well and I confuse people around me with how quickly I can shift my style. It’s a journey really and how can we find our voice as an artist if we don’t try different things? I’m now just finding my voice and it took over a decade of trying different styles. My portfolio looks insane 😆 but I’ve learned to accept that that’s just how my brain works. I’m glad this video found you 🫶🏾

I have made a career of being a multi hyphenate artist I serve the story - the message. This means I am constantly shifting what I do and trying/learning new skills which get integrated into my art. Approaching life as if it’s a journey - not a destination has helped me overall. I am process oriented and thus everything I do is rewarding. I share all aspects of my process with pride and TRUST that those who will resonate with my art will see me and commission me to create. Please please do NOT think that having multiple passions makes you a dilettante - it makes you a “multidisciplinary artist” and more of us are being recognized than ever.

Do not despair @Melody! I hear you and I empathize. I've been painting solo for now almost ten years and have shared my art with few people because I was too shy. Allow yourself to experience many different styles in order to find your own. It's about experimentation. That's the only way you will find your style. Do no let anybody box you in a category. Artists are free spirits. I used to think all the things you expressed when I began. I do not know how to draw but I can find other ways to express myself through shapes and colours, Do not break your own heart dearest! Give yourself grace and continue to explore. Believe in your talent and invite your spiritual guides to help you find your true self and let it be revealed through your paintings. YES you can do that! Tara is a great source of inspiration for all of us . She provides a platform to meet and share. I'm grateful to her. I'm at a different stage of my evolution as an artist. I'm no longer scared to show what I do. I'm looking for the right platform to do it. KEEP CREATING and find joy peace and validation into your own spirit instead of asking it from others. Let your heart be your guide and trust your intuition. Be blessed!💙

It was an eye-opening video, especially the self-worth part. We expect things from the wrong people and doubt our self-worth. Very well said. Sometimes though, it's even more simple-- your family and friends just don't like art like you do. They have interests and pursuits that I'm not interested in. And face it, ours is a difficult proposition. It's not the same as one of our family and friends opens up a restaurant so we go support them and buy a plate of food. True we supported them and all, but we got something out of the deal as well. We got a good meal and we needed that meal. In our case, we are sometimes literally serving up a "nothingburger" from their point of view. They hope we're successful, but they just don't get it... It's okay.

Hey Terra this was really good for me to see. I would say I'm an optimist and that I know a lot of my hurdles in sales or lack thereof. I want to say I know the two sides of interest, positive and negative, but I'm not sure anymore. I'm just starting on my youtube journey, at least in new content and having deleted far too casual efforts, but I have dreams where I could write a novel and my videos would be liked by people who may support it. I guess what I'm saying is for me right now its like deciding who to talk to between 2 people I meet because one is more interested. I do like the role of strategizing and meditation. I'm personally leaning towards quicker impressionistic painting styles and it lends to me knowing I can go a kind of new route with it all and not fear that I have several highly realistic efforts. In other words I think multiple avenues for things on the go that apply, like you doing helpful videos, is really good. Like a painter who sketches too, or a painter who goes on hikes (my kind of thing) and then like I was saying that writing a book could be helpful if wisely timed. You were right wisdom is precious, and it lends to that therapeutic, meditative understanding of art. I hope you're doing great, I was just out filming and its so nice here. Stay inspired! Dave from Canada

You make so many good points! Your comments on wisdom are spot on. Often we gain it through a process we might not choose to put ourselves through. After though, we are grateful for what we harvest. I want to add a point that I think might be true: just because your content has resonated (deeply) with me today, does not automatically mean that it will be reciprocal. It took me a while to make peace with the reality that some artists that I just love, don't necessarily love my creativity. Those bonds where two creators resonate with each other are really special.

I’m glad you brought this up because it is very true. It’s something I’ve experienced myself in the art community and felt left out at some point especially since I haven’t established my signature style yet. But you’re right…when it’s reciprocated it’s magical ✨
