I'm glad we got 5th Gear, I don't think I'd be here if it didn't exist, it's pure fun, that's all I need. Now that I think about it, it and the me hearing "One Piece will end soon" is what made me watch the entire series. Now I'm a new OP fan. @@TheBlackShinigami it's a good idea, the only problem was the mistranslation back in Enies Lobby. Lucci wasn't saying that the fruit literally tells you what power you have. Once you eat it, you will realize it after time, like you may accidentally transform like Momo did, or you might stretch without knowing like Luffy did. Also, we know that mythical zoans have paramecia like abilities. For example, Marco can heal people with his fire and it can work remotely. Sengoku has shockwaves and can grow in size. Kaido can breathe fire, summon tornadoes and affect the weather. None of the abilities I listed are physical attributes of the creature they turn into, where someone like Lucci, even though he is awakened, can't do anything outside of what a leopard can physically do with his devil fruit. Chopper can transform, but his fruit doesn't allow him to run in the air like a mythical deer fruit model Rudolf might do lol. So Luffy having other abilities outside of him transforming is normal based on how we know mythical zoans to work. Him being able to fly, him affecting the world around him, him using fire, summoning objects, they may seem like paramecia abilities but they are because he is a mythical zoan.

What if the source of all DFs is the original Nika himself, who learned to access this realm of imagination through the scarf. Maybe the scarf is some sort of divine artifact that was created at the birth of the universe (like an infinity stone), and Nika somehow found it. It would keep in line both with what Dr. Vegapunk said, and how the cloud scarf is the "source of Nikas fantasy". It would certainly cause the people of the world to endow Nika with the title of god if he was able to grant powers to people by imagining a fruit that grants the ability, then pulling it from his cloud scarf.

The scarf kind of reminded me of Gokus nimbus cloud (sort of a divine object), and how Sun Wukong has divine artifacts. Since Luffy has some inspiration drawn from both characters I thought there's a possibility. I dont know if it's really in line with Oda's writing style but divine objects could be a cool idea.

One thing that echos to me is that Luffy’s connection to Sun Wukong is more tied to his abilities and his staff. I feel like Luffy SHOULD get a weapon in Elbalf that syncs with his Gear 5 PERFECTLY because no Yonkou uses no weapons. Sounds like a very personal gripe and it's hard to relate to what you're saying without specific contrasting examples. Yea, people like tension, but they also wanna know that their heroes win in the end. "the end" being a nebulous term; it doesn't necessarily mean the immediate end to a fight or an arc, but by some end, either being the end of a particular character's arc or the end of a story or something else. Example: Luffy vs Usopp. Very tense situation, and it stretches throughout Water 7 and Enies Lobby, but at the end of the arc it's resolved and our heroes "win" by reuniting. If instead, Usopp had remained on Water 7 and gone his own way, the tension would remain but people would be anticipating the resolution of that conflict, the reuniting of those characters, the "win". If the series ended and Usopp never made it back to the crew, that would be unsatisfactory because that tension would remain unresolved. So it's not really that people like the tension, it's more that they like the resolution, and the tension helps to build that resolution. So if your gripe is about unresolved tension, I'd say just wait until the story is over, because until then it's not really a valid complaint. If your gripe is about past resolved tension that you believe is invalidated by current events, that's not really valid because that resolved tension still exists within a specific timeframe of the story. You can't really say that it's ruined by future events because reading the story without foreknowledge will always result in that event having a satisfactory conclusion. The big example here being Robin/Saul. Saul being alive doesn't invalidate what happened before, because when you read that, it hadn't happened and you were satisfied with the conclusion. If you're looking back and saying "well this sucks now because I know he doesn't really die" then that's not a realistic criticism because at the time you didn't know he lived, and anyone reading the story for the first time will also think he died there and be satisfied. Hindsight has never made anyone happier. If you're not happy with the resolution itself, well that's just a matter of opinion and taste, and there's nothing to be done about that.

Oda has already placed limits on Luffy's devil fruit abilities: fatigue for gear 2, shrinking for gear 3, losing consciousness/becoming immobile for gear 4 and 5. "Playing with fire in a dry forest with oil" is essentially saying you expect with near certainty that Oda is going to ruin his story. I have far more faith in Oda's writing than that. There's a big difference between summoning goggles and summoning a replica Zoro out of nothing, to the point where I'm not worried about gear 5 at all. In fact, I'm more hyped for every upcoming Luffy fight than ever.

I understand what you are getting at but this shows is about freedom and gear 5 fits with the theme. In the get go, Oda took heavy inspiration from loony toons. That is not a current thing and has been know for years about where Oda gets his inspiration. To say it in short, gear 2, 3, & 4 was a lead up to 5th.

@@77dd2 then you misunderstood my point. its general freedom on all forms. writing, illustrations, and so on. they might not understand the tension when reading or watching but its there. its a time limit and a cap of his imagination. but how powers work in this fictional verse is more insane so always expect to be surprised.

Yeah I agree. The nika powers have sucked a lot of the tension out of the story imo because we don’t ever really see Luffy get serious or desperate when he’s in the nika form so it’s hard to know the actual tone of the conflict. I do support Oda as an artist and fulfilling his vision for his story even if it isn’t my favorite. At the end of the day, the guy has been writing this story for 27 years and it seems like this is what he’s always wanted to do with the story. This is what gives him personal joy so I try to enjoy the nika stuff for what it is and all that Oda will show us with it.

@Randomguy1d One Piece has always been goofy, even in some serious moments. This isn't AoT. Plus, Luffy's goofiness in Gear 5 isn't just some cool gag Oda threw in there. There are obvious links to the story and who Nika was as a person. Could even link to the devil fruit origins. Some One Piece fans just see everything at face value, which just doesn't work with One Piece. A serious, edgy Gear 5 might make 0 sense to the story.

@@manofculture8666 It has never being gear 5 levels of goofy. I'm kinda at a crossroad with this transformation myself. On one hand, I like how this transformation means something to the people who know about nika. It's not just some random transformation. The transformation also has ties to the past that will be explored in detail later. Some MCs just unlock transformations for the sole purpose of defeating the enemy in front of them. Not gear 5. On the other hand, it doesn't help in elevating the tension the story builds up. It actually counters it. Vegapunk's death is a good enough example of how the situation can go from 100 to 0 in an instant. And the forced laughter gets annoying after some time. But the latter might be a me problem 😅. I just hate forced comedy.

@Randomguy1d I can understand that. I just don't feel it's "forced" because the laughter in itself probably means something and relates to how Nika was. Imagine we find out Nika laughs because everyone he knew perished in a horrible way, worse than Ohara. I trust One Piece to pull something off like that, and it would make the Gear 5 laugh hold more significance. I'm just going based on how One Piece always is. Nothing is random. Luffy in Gear 5 laughs like a maniac for a reason. I don't think it's just an added gimmick. Details you just don't see in box-standard Shonen transformations.

Luffy is not a mythical zoan, but a paramecia deliberately designed to counter enel/thor Rubber-counters basic lighting Motherflame- counter power source for ancient weapons. (Enel was able to power the ancient city in the moon, the same power source for urunus and other weapons) Heartbeat- counter enel's resurrection ability. Toonforce- counters enel's mind control/ mind reading. Stretchy/freedom- counters enel's want for control and dictatorship. "Sun"- counters enel's want to go to the moon. Rubber fruit was made by nika on elbaf, wanting to fight against thor, a dictator destroying elbaf in order to build urunus to escape to the moon, along with flooding the world so no one could follow. Nika made the paramecia as a counter, making pluton as a ship to fight urunus. Thor ends up getting beat, ends up going to the moon anyways. The moon has people on it, which thor takes control of, using his electricity to create a city along with automatons. Fruit gets passed down, until someone comes and announces that joyboy is fighting the world government, and they are going to flood the earth, causing people to want to go to higher ground, and eventually the moon. The lighting user doesn't want the moon to get crowded, so comes down with the ancient weapons. Fruit user ends up dying, having the fruit spawn on skypia. The world government thinks that luffy's fruit is a mythical zoan, because they haven't seen the lighting fruit, and don't know that is a counter to it.
