Not all of us city folk are fooled by the shiny new things farmers. 40 years ago, at art school in Wales, I met farmers sons telling me stories of Welsh dairy farmers going bust, and farmers topping themselves. The attack on British farming has been going on for a long time. I am daily aware where my food comes from, even if it is via a supermarket sometimes.

What a lot of people don't realise all of Ollys new tractors and kit it's all borrowed money. Tom's sheds and parlour it's all borrowed money again. There's 2 types of farmer one has all the kit and spends his life paying back the bank, and after he passes still owes the bank. And the other sacrifices, goes without, buys what he can afford when he can afford it. Both sides are very stressful, while one has to find money every month to pay back the bank + interest, the other one has old kit old sheds has to work harder, but doesn't owe a penny to anyone.

Yes I agree with you Gazza. I watch Olly, Wardy and Harry. They seem to have loads of time to make multiple KZbin videos per week, and swan off on foreign breaks several times a year. I don’t watch Clarkson, his banning of Starmer from his pub worked really well for him, didn’t it? He and Harry are clearly hobby farmers. I grew up on a small farm, too small for me to earn a decent leaving, so I had to get myself an education and work damn hard and for very long hours at something else over the last 40 years. So I don't exactly sympathise with them. Big farmers often seem to look down on the smaller ones. And that's not unique to the UK. Anyway, new subscriber for you from Ireland. The average size of a UK farm is 88 hectares, 200 acres. The other farm influences are not flaunting it but have the time and opportunity to show their farming enterprises. I don’t think anyone would be interested in seeing a small unprofitable livestock farmer struggling to make ends meet tbh.

In the budget the Chancellor lays out her plans. OK Labour have a large majority, but these changes to Inheritance Tax for farms are not law yet. If sufficient people protest there is a chance that the proposals will be modified. Throwing in the towel the day after the budget was announced makes no sense at all. The people on here slagging off other farmers who have KZbin channels should look in the mirror and ask themselves is that going to help? Clarkson, has done more for British farming than any other farmer ever. Jeremy is not a fan of Labour you need to get him to lead a campaign against these proposals. In France farmers would be planning to blockade the key infrastructure and motorways to force a change in Government policy. I think within the country there would be a lot of support for farmers once people understand that giant corporations will not be interested in looking after the countryside and the food produced.

Yes people have big expensive tractors but they are used to create a big turn over of money. It’s invested into the farm. If they were building swimming pools and taking private jets you’d have a point. A lot of these you tubers are making all this money from you tube not farming…. But all seem to invest the money back in to farming. If they were going skiing every month I’d understand your moan.

I didn’t say that I said poorer people and politicians watching this all happen while they are skint is why it’s changed and my point with Olly is that he is part of the farmers union and decided to not support the welsh farmers last year but is now crying in his soup because he is at the sharp end. I’m Not jealous at all I’m happy with what I’ve got, money doesn’t rule my life like it does some. The unrealistic big money farming we see on utube is part of the problem

Can I ask what you think of ploughing? This no plough idea is now going into people’s gardening . I am sure that this does nothing for compaction or drainage? Please correct me if I am wrong , I aim to learn .
@onlygazza8 күн бұрын
I am no expert on it but certain land types need to be ploughed and sone don’t but they still need subsoiling if it’s not ploughed to get the compaction out. Pasture does improve with a rotation of ploughing but on my farm most of it has been in a key for over 40 years but I over-seed grass into it to keep it performing. The nonsense about doing it on gardening is ridiculous, a garden needs shoveling over to pick out the weeds n stones. Lots of what you here about regeneration farming is lies to be honest because you simply need to put back the nitrogen and nutrients the crop took to grow to grow a crop next time. Thanks for commenting 👍
@simon-k7m8 күн бұрын
@ Thanks , like you I can see it for and against . Non plough people seem to bang on about how much diesel they are saving but don’t mention the cost of the special drill they need . I also hate this “one solution suits all” approach . Our land and farmers in the fens are no doubt vastly different from what you lads need on the Welsh side . I think at this point the lunatics are definitely running the asylum.

My neighbours farm has 10,000 acres and he's a Tennant farmer. Always the latest technology, biggest Tractors etc. This may be his downfall ? 16 Tractors
@TotalOpel7 күн бұрын
I can see where you're coming from as regards some of the KZbinrs but to be fair to Olly, he is always saying how his farm is not like all farms and also that he has basically got 14 different incomes. He isn't completely relying on a crop to keep him afloat. He also explains how and why he gets new equipment. He buys on finance and he explains how that method works for him. As he's also a contract farmer he needs the equipment to be able to make money back though it. He has diversified his business. The grain storage, the offices he lets out, the stables, the Airbnb and even KZbin are incomes for him. It's the money from KZbin that is paying for the Bateman sprayer. As a view we see this - we know that this isn't the same for every farm. I guarantee you that the government hasn't brought this inheritance tax in just because Olly bought 2 new Fendt tractors on finance. He has been constantly going on about how farming is not making money.
@dominicrobertson58856 күн бұрын
I am sorry Gazza but I don't agree with anything you have said. I watch the other farmers you mentioned on KZbin. Andrew Ward from Wardys Weekly Waffle does a huge amount for livestock farmers and set up forage aid to help them. Very little of his equipment is new. Apart from one tractor most of his is just well maintained older equipment. He is battling the weather like the rest of us and he shows farming in it truest form (worts in all). One of his landlord has just taken back 400 acres as he has just signed up for one of the SFI incentives. So there is no bragging or showing off there. James Peck who has the PX farm KZbin actually owns very little of the 12000 acres he farms. I would describe him more of a business man than a farmers. He has big balls to be dealing with the level of risk with the finance involved. Being a limited company you can see his balance sheets online. That has the potential to go very wrong. All his equipment is on finance. He needs new and reliable equipment as he can't afford downtime given the acres he has to cover. The other point you completely is that they create jobs for many people. James Peck must employ over 30 people. Finally people (not all from farming) watch these You tubers not through spite or green envy but because there are informative and very entertaining. There is no need for an us and them attitude. Farming people should all stick and work together. Andrew Ward has just been pointing that this new inheritance tax will affect all farmers including you and other welsh farmers. The point he has been making is that farms may have assets over £1m but they are not cash rich. So a son or daughter taking over a family farm would have to sell land to pay the inheritance tax.
