Why Fernando Alonso's Driving Style Isn't Working
Fernando Alonso and Aston Martin have been on a bad run after really big upgrades to the car. Fernando has had a bad streak of 3 races and has said this is a major wake up call for Aston Martin and he needs to drive better. Alonso loves understeer, but is one of the most adaptable drivers on the grid. Will Aston Martin and Fernando Alonso turn it around soon?

Last year's car had Vettel's development input now this AMR 24 has Alonso? if so he's not a good development driver or maybe they prefer to develop a car that suits Stroll's driving style.

@@kevinmugi8811F1 cars aren't developed to suit an specific driver,(that is a myth from the 80s) they are made to be as fast as possible. It's the drivers job to adapt to them. Alonso has allways been very good at adapting to new car specs, he'll make this tractor work eventually.

Alonso has the quality to make any car work. Lets not forget Alonso qualified 3rd in China just 3 races ago. The car is just not fast enough and struggles with balance. Even in Imola, Alonso before the crash, Alonso was matching Stroll's Qualy Simulation lap despite being on 7 lap old Hard tyres.

Pre upgrades, the car was at least quick in Quali - Alonso got P3 in China. Had AM brought a car with that kind of characteristics in Monaco, they could have got a podium as tyre wear doesn’t matter there. I don’t understand AM with their upgrades and development, despite Merc being involved in this as well. Aston should not upgraded the car at all until their is physical proof that the car is getting faster

I think (and it may be a coincidence here), but the 2 cars sharing the same wind tunnel (Mercedes and Aston), are both having correlation issues between sim driving and data, and what the actual car is doing on track. Now I may be simplifying things here, but there has got to be something in it. The sooner AMR's own wind tunnel comes online, the better.

The major problem is due to the Mercedes rear suspension, Mercedes admitted that there is a major flaw in the performance of the suspension, I think Mercedes are coping better than Aston Martin with this issue since they understand the suspension more so they know how to setup the car in a better shape. It's weird how Mercedes haven't figured out how to make a good suspension in the past 3 years.

Fernando is facing chicken and egg problem if he setup understeery car then the tyre wear out will be more which hampers his race (we saw that in china) and to preserve tyre it is needed to setup oversteery car which is opposite his racing style (compromise speed while entering a corner to get better exit which is opposite to max). The new generation cars are more oversteery and new drivers is able to perform bcoz they started their carrer in these cars. Only solution for fernando to change his extrem understeery driving style to balanced driving style ( balance between understeer and oversteer like lewis) that will also suits lance and aston can perform better again.

@SailICfast
@SailICfast 3 ай бұрын
I think you missed one important part when he won the WDC in the Renault. The tires then were indestructible. He would heat up the tires understeering into the corner. On exit, the ultra stable rear of that car, and now he had a lot of front end grip, he could accelerate like no other out of the corner. Perhaps Alonso's weak area is how to manage tires. Given the ultra sensitive Pirelli tires to temperature, high or low, this is something he is less capable than the young drivers who had to adopt and learn this at an early age.

I wouldn't say Lewis and Alonso are similar. Alonso is likely the most adaptable along with Max. However their styles are very different. Max uses a shallow line, has an earlier turn in, extends the straights. His corners are shorter. Lewis requires a strong rear end, is very late on the breaks, takes the geometric line. Alonso is closer to the Geometric line but has far more aggressive turn in.

I really don’t buy into this most adaptable narrative. Alonsos had a gaping flaw his whole career with his extremely abrupt steering input. It’s why in a lot of cars he’s driven he’s often left 2/3 tenths on the table in qualy and on low fuel at the end of the race. His ceiling was never as high as Verstappen/Hamilton/Schumacher. Fully agree about his IQ wheel to wheel though that’s by far his best strength

Alonso's track positioning skill is the most reminiscent of Senna of any driver I've seen since. Overall Alonso is most like Senna apart from all out speed over 1 lap. Alonso himself admitted he is not the fastest over one lap but better in races. Senna's had the track positioning skills of Alonso with the best all out speed over 1 lap. I didn't like Alonso in the beginning (also with Sing 2008) but now I root for him simply because of his skill. Man, everyone knows we want Max and Alonso in the Red Bull. It's so simple.

For all Alonso’s greatness, there has never been a team he stayed with for a longer time period that developed a faster car while he was there. In fact the opposite. The longer he stays the worse the car gets. Only exception is arguably Renault. But then he likely had relatively the least amount of influence and clout to determine the development direction of the team, because he wasn’t the made man yet that he became later on. Personally I feel he tries to develop the car towards more understeer, resulting in not fast enough cars that he then drags to positions they have no business being in (but not enough to win) while his teammates can’t deal with those cars at all. So he beats all his teammates…but he and his teams don’t win the championship. To make the most out of him teams should probably not let him have an overwhelming say in the development direction of the car (so either hire a top tier designer who does his own thing and/or an accomplished teammate with a nack for car development).

Aston Martin is the BEST team currently on the grid, in my honest opinion. Just how good is Aston Martin Racing? They are so confident that week after week, race after race, they only have one car in the race, while Ferrari have 2 cars, Charles and Carlos, Red Bull Max and Checo, LH and George for Mercedes, Oscar and Norris with McLaren, AMR only entered Alonso for the races and used Stroll as a test car in the back of the grid away from dirty air.

It's interesting that with this iteration of cars the more they are being developed more to have oversteer as that is seemingly the fastest way. I think I'm right in that LeClerc, Norris, Max and probably Russell all have that style of driving I don't know about Yuki I probably missed that video 😂

I’m sure that these ‘odd’ suspension geometries are causing problems, with extreme anti-dive and anti-squat causing a lack of feel and predictability if the dynamic roll centre is shifting around…

It's just a couple of races due to bad luck and some rare bad driving from Alonso, may be overdriving due to the car being shit. I will be more concerned about Aston perpetually bringing upgrades that take the car backwards

I think that Fernando is fed up with the car, Aston brought so many updates but lost 3-4 tenths instead of gaining speed. He also just resigned with them and is probably regretting it. Mclaren doing well now is making him hate his life as well.

So what about the issue of coherence with the Mercedes wind tunnel? Both teams using this tunnel have issues w underperforming upgrades 🤔

Uh… it’s actually bad in the longer high speed corners cuz it just doesn’t generate downforce. But at the same time their speed on the straights is bad too so… something wrong with upgrades

So so strange watching Alonso, who for the longest time has seemingly been able to drive around every single problem a car of his has had, actually truly struggling. 2024 has been a big surprise in sooo many ways so far 😅

Surprised about his own comments regarding how he feels the front tyres at the steering wheel. All other F1 drivers I read or heard about in the last 15 years at least, say that you get little to none feeling from the steering, and it's more about seat of the pants than anything else. Maybe he's just too old school for the modern crop and that's why he retains such skill.

I am really praying Alonso gets his 3rd title. It's a moonshot but he deserves it so much more. Really hope he goes to Mercedes or Red Bull. Or even McLaren if Lando moves. His race IQ is unparalleled.

No, Fernando adapts driveability in each car. Cant compare Renault v10 with Ferrari v8 with Honda v6 in Mclaren. The problem is the car,chassis and geometry in AMR24

Fernando signs multi-year deal with AM ... Fernando lets AM current Owner's son win a few weekends ... seems pretty cause and effect to me. I would expect him to come back "suddenly" when the AM real owners (Honda & Aramco) put a little pressure on, especially once we cross the season halfway mark to get ready for 2025 when Lance won't be there and they are trying to be suitors for talent that will want to see what the car can do. You ain't getting big talent if you're at the back of the grid no matter how big your wind tunnel is. Results attract talent, talent makes results and so it goes around

Alonso is an all-time great. He just needs an Adrian Newey to replace the joke team in designing the car. Regrettably, we have seen the designers at Aston develop the car backwards too many times. It's a pattern. Stop developing the car backwards. Throw away your simulator data and your wind tunnel and CFD data and the entire design team if needed. Get Newey.

is not his driving style, Stroll last year was gettting near podium every race and this season he doesnt even score points, the car is just slow now. With Alonso it happens like with Hamilton or Leclerc, whenever they are not fighting for important stuff, they dont really go to their last gear
