Why filmmakers use bi-colour lights and you should too | with the GVM SD80s

What color temp do you have your key light set to here? I'm deciding whether to buy a bi-color Amaran or a daylight, but all of the accent lighting indoors at my place are warmer lights, so I'm wondering what the best move would be

I have my key light set to 5600k daylight because I want the lights in the background to look yellow/orange. Some people will say this makes it look “lit” but Im not trying to trick people into thinking I’m not using a light, and everything is natural, so I don’t mind. However, I would 99% of the time recommend getting a bi-colour light if you can. It’s give you so much more flexibility in dialling in a look you want.

the d stands for daylight. these being bi color you can tune in the white balance to match other lights where youre shooting. with the sd80d its only daylight so youll have issues shooting on location with warm lights and trying to color balance

​@@BrandzHD It's the opposite. In this fixture, D stands for dual and S for single. GVM80S is not Bicolor.

Yeah I have 4 …. 80w ones and they tilt green …. So I can only ever use just them … or gel them for color unfortunately. That’s what we get saving money but to Be fair the competition was pricey… but I see why now

Hey, sorry but this is wrong. The GVM SD80S is not Bicolor, it's just Daylight. The SD80D is (D stands for Dual). Please check.

I've just checked. The light is bi colour. You can change the kelvin by holding the dial in for a second then turning it. The code on the light is GVM SD80S, it is also on the instruction manual that came with it. Unless GVM have branded the light they sent up to me incorrectly, then it is 100% bi colour. It would also be strange that they used a different naming structure than other light makers where the D stands for daylight.

Haha, your right their website says the S is mono and the D is bi colour. Strangely their home page calls the D - GVM SD80D 80w Bi-Color Spotlight Daylight - I have no idea what is going on. All I can say is my one is branded as SD80S and I can change the colour temp. Maybe they branded some up wrong, or maybe they’re got their website wrong. If anyone else has the lamp, let me know if it’s mono or not.
