Why Final Fantasy 16's Prologue is AMAZING

A few days ago we finally got our hands on Final Fantasy 16 and the fan response has been pretty insane. With less than a week until launch, I wanted to take a minute and reflect on the beginning of the adventure this demo showed off, and why I think it's one of the best opening acts to a game I've ever played. Surprisingly eikon is not a made up word. It comes from Greek and means "image of", so with Phoenix being the eikon of fire, it means that it is the image of fire. It also has religious connotations with a whole ass civil being waged in the Byzantine empire, the eponymous "Eikonomachy", about whether eikons should be allowed to be used in the Christian faith or not.

The combat in the beginning of the game has a bit more depth than you mentioned in the video also. The standard combo of square x 4 can be enhanced to adding in a triangle press after each square press turning your standard 4 hit combo into a very fast 8 hit combo. Also, there is a damage multiplier being added to staggered enemies so you want to raise that before hitting the enemy with your R2+square for extra damage. Also, counter attacks can be done by pressing square right before an enemy hits you. There is even more to the demo combat too these are just medium tech if you will. So the skill ceiling here is really high if you want to dive deeper into it.

Hey ran into your videos a while ago great content. Wanted to comment this on the community post of my thoughts and what i think is so cool with this game and potential. I know people personally that was upset about the combat without it being turned base but its really great in this game. Some people were saying they feel like the freedom is taken away cuz there is no party control only you controling clive, but because if the eikon form changes that is pretty much ur party character changer. The combat allows for so much freedom in how you want to play it and we saw a glimpse of it at the pre-launch event when max an Suzuki played. Max went for a straight up dps build, and Suzuki went for a counter build. Regarding party being AI I say it makes sense cuz its also just the narrative of this game. It's Clive's story, which even before originally (I could be wrong) there was supposedly not going to be any ai companions except for Torgal. If it was a center focus on the party like all other games like that im sure they would've done a action combat more akin to 7R and if they want to try action rpg but not like 7R with all the eikon abilities this game has prob a dragons dogma. I'm just really pumped for this. From the VA amazing delivery, the more traditional yet grounded fantasy setting, the combat, the music its pretty much my GoTY. Want to make vids on it but kinda afraid cuz my writing is pretty all over the place and idk how to make vids. Side note (personal feelings on just the combat system change) I feel like FF has been trying to move away from turn based to more action real time with the introduction of ATB system in the games and how they progressively changed with each entry. Then 12, 15, and 7R were main line entries that got rid of it. Spin offs like crisis core, tactics, dirge of cerberus, lightning returns, and type-0 didnt have them which to me was square testing waters on how to introduce a more real time combat as well as just variety for the IP. Even with this im sure its gonna be probably just for this game cuz they can always go to turn base again or have it with a party system like 7R for future mainline installments. Not to mention if this game does well in Japanese market it's gonna be huge for practically all devs. It'll be another Ghost Of Tsushima over there. Pretty much everything from this game is what doesn't work over there with their market. It's a very much darker serious tone with an older male protagonist not some 17-19 year old teen, no major big booba or massively fan servicey/mascottey young female companion. Not to say there's anything wrong with that I do also love those tropes, but it can be tiring entry after entry, game to game. It doesn't play in the trope most JRPGs or just Japanese games have. And it's not because devs don't wanna try it it's kinda because execs don't wanna risk it because they know it won't attract their audience. Sure we have Clive and cast as they are younger but I think once we get passed that prologue which we played in the demo that would be it cuz we ppay as Clive when hes 28 as well as in his 30's. It can break the door open especially over there because with Ghost Of Tsushima it was well this is a western company now imagine a household company of their own trying it and succeeding number wise or at least to their standards (which if im correct after the demo pre orders went up in japan a a good amount). It could probably execs more open to trying new things with characters, and direction. If you read through all this im sorry lol. I just wanted to let out my thoughts on this game and the impression the demo left on me to a more public area than just my notes so I can get some feedback, and read other thoughts.

Thanks so much for the in-depth comment! They're the best ones to get. In regards to sales, it'll definitely be interesting to see how this game performs in its domestic market, and will also heavily effect if the major shift to focusing on overseas markets continues in the way it has been over the last handful of years. FFXV sold very, very well and considering that XVI isn't cross platform I doubt it'll reach that 10m copies sold mark, at least not right now. But we can hope. And I totally encourage you to keep writing and try your hand at making videos if you have the motivation! It's a lot of work but it stimulates so many different aspects of the creative process, it's a very personally rewarding thing to do. Just don't steal my views, because then I will eat you! Argh!

Also thanks for the encouragement. I will try to make a videos with this game being my 1st one then. It has been crazy with video games especially this second half of the year practically giving banger after banger of enjoyablity each month to me at least. Eikons is the name older civilisations in FFXIV calls Primals to keep it story vague essentially gods summoned by anyone with a combination of image, prayer and sacrifice be it lives, bodies, crystals or a combination of those. The team came fresh from FFXIV post first expansion circa 2015-2017 so that won't be the only shared but altered concept from there as it's made by the same producer, translator, director, writer and composer as the first expansion and most of them have worked on both projects during XVIs development.

I didn't really enjoy Final Fantasy 15 at all, especially the story, so I was rather hesitant to give 16 a try. I think they did a good job with what was given to us in the demo to change my mind at least.

i mean its not fair to say there was no good games from square. Nier, Dragon quest 11 ,FF7R, triangle strategy, Octopath Traveler I and II ,Tomb Raider, Kingdom Hearts 3, Star Ocean: The Divine Force many good games. Yes that's right they had a lot of flops too but most of the single player games was great. And let's not forget the masterpiece FF14 Shadowbringer and Endwalker. People only remember the bad when there was so much good. What I like about Square Enix is ​​that they are one of the few who dare to try something new even if it fails. The funny thing is that players criticize that about many developers these days. Square does it yet they are not afraid to fail.

Very true, yet I still think my point stands. There were many flops I didn't mention as well, chocobo racing and it's poor monetisation, Crystal Chronicles getting a remaster that borked its multiplayer, alongside games like Strangers of Paradise and Star Ocean 6(for as much as I love it) having serious issues with optimization at launch. I'll actually stand by Square as still being one of the most influential and interesting developers and publishers in the games industry, but its very hard for the collective gaming community to take them at their word these days.

In general I dislike cover shooters, and from what I played of TLoU 1(which admittedly wasn't much) I felt no draw from the combat. I didn't necessarily slam TLoU either, I simply said it wasn't for me. More power to you if you get something out of it.
