Why Flint still doesn’t have clean water after 4 years | AJ+

AJ+'s Dena Takruri returns to Flint for the 4-year anniversary of the water crisis. Officials here say the water is safe, but residents still don't trust them. And since the state of Michigan stopped providing free bottled water, people here are forced to pay some of the highest bills in the country for water they don't even use. When will this crisis be over?

It was heartbreaking to return to Flint after two years and find that not much has changed. Even though this story has largely disappeared from headlines, the people are still really struggling. I hope you all enjoyed this video and that we did the people of Flint justice. Come back to next week to see me report on what Nestle has been up to in Michigan...you don't wanna miss it.

Dena you should have walked in with a cup filled with this new "safe to drink" water and asked him to drink it. "ok if it's safe to drink then I want you to drink this cup of water". If he refuses or takes a sip rather than drinking the whole thing then he is tying his own noose.

TokenBlackman7 So while those who fault Governor Snyder are not entirely wrong, what is deeply dishonest is the story put forward by such people as the filmmaker Michael Moore, who enjoys pretending to be from gritty, blue-collar Flint (he actually hails from an affluent suburb nearby), that this is, somehow, the result of the Republican approach to government or conservative governing ideas. That is absurd. Flint is a mess made by Democrats, made worse by the Democrats in Detroit, and ignored by the Democrats in the White House. The worst that can be said of the Republican on the scene is that he failed to save the local Democrats from the worst effects of their own excesses.

Cause a stupidly large number of Americans think taxes are evil. It is also often framed as a state by state issue rather then a national issue so often times the Fed trusts the state to handle infrastructure. This has only gotten worse as the country has become more polarized and the Federal government has become more dysfunctional. Internationally Washington does a lot, but internally it's best to look to the state government for help then the fed.

@@auntmelisa8689 In the US, that's the point. I've noticed from travelling around the world that in Europe & Asia, cities are where man's greatness is celebrated. In the US, it's a dumping ground. Where I live (the Rust Belt), all the money goes to the suburbs, while welfare cases, drug treatment, halfway homes, mental health housing & parole programs are sent to the inner-city, usually with cut funding & high crime. Why are the cities treated so badly but the suburbs treated so well? I'll give you a hint; look at the skin tone of the residents. As a white guy, I've seen blue collar trade-practicing blacks get denied suburban housing, but white people with two jobs in fast food & retail given the OK. Redlining is alive & well in the northern US. I live in a city which has PFOS poisoning in its drinking water & the county, state & federal government have done nothing, yet the suburbs next door are on their third filtration plant in twenty years. So it's like I originally stated, if the suburbs had this happen, the problem would have been solved long ago. I think we all know why no one will fix this.

Mark Brown No, I am saying that their average cost for water is 3x what mine is at about $150 p/mo in a region with a median household income of 28k (31k for a family). That is insane considering I live in a desert and they are in Michigan, the land of a thousand lakes. That's just on-time payments. These people are paying about 10% of their annual income for poisoned water. Imagine how bad the fees are if they fall behind, as discussed in this video. Would you willingly divert 10% of your household income to pay for poisoned water?

That's not a result of gentrification. Quite the opposite, the population once was 200,000 and fell to half of that and is still declining. And that's part of the problem especially when the population "thins out" rather than "shrinks" because that means the entire infrastructure has to be kept up at full scale. Less people have to pay more for it to keep running, deterring new people to move in and enforces the feedback loop down. Its a collapse. Some cities have trouble to manage their growth but most do a really bad job at managing downsizing.

the explanation the Chief Financial Officer has given is the most arrogant thing I've ever heard the overall state of the situation boils down to this ; instead of the at-fault party paying damages they've effectively turned around the point of culpability and are now forcing the victims to pay damages to the at-fault party. The equivalent of this is forcing the family of an executed man to pay for the bullets that the firing squad used to put him to death.

And Nestlé who steals our water wanna stop giving free water to flint ..pass this on flint still needs water And Nestlé needs to pay more than $200 a year to get our water..and if they think the water is clean tell everyone they don't need water filters anymore if its truly safe like they say

Colton Is not my name The Free Market ideologues are the ones that brought this to communities like Flint. Remember the mantra of small government? Don't try to play down the influence of inept government (austerity) and business accumen in these events, the whole Flint crisis was kicked off in the name of budgets and business deals.

Amanda Harig After a further infestation the ”led poisoning” was traced to an ”outbreak of the bacteria-based Legionnaires’ disease in Flint that caused the deaths of 12 people.” After measuring the blood lead levels of several children, there was an average of only ”0.11 micrograms per deciliter.” These levels are not statistically significant considering they are within the standard fluctuation ranges. As with most issues, people are merely trying to politicize the event an there assertions are unfounded. I am not stating that they do not have an issue they certainly need some renovations. If it is an issue, you are concerned about why don't you take action rather than blaming others.

They can’t sell their homes for capital the way many of us with clean water can. If they try to move other near by areas with clean water, it drives the housing price up each time a person moves. Those who didn’t move right away, and don’t have enough money to just pack up and start over, cannot afford a new home because the price has gone way, way up.

@Mark Yates that is for a fact wrong though, there are enough people that don't have a lot of $$ in capitalist countries. We get the scraps of what is left of the money, the rest is taken by the government and the richest of the rich. It just looks like it helps people out of poverty because capitalist countries have more money than countries using some other system and the scraps we get are bigger.

Deena, you're a promising reporter and u talk about important issues. However, you're very biased in your reporting and pick a side before the episode is even aired. You should present the facts with balance and represent both sides of the story equally no matter how u feel. For example, in this video u showed many families and children affected by the toxicity of the water before. That's no indication that the water isn't safe now as the government claims. If anything u should've looked into these tests and how reliable they are instead of appealing to the audience's emotions. And u didn't look into how the heck that lady raked up over $6000 in water bills, was she filling up all the pools in the neighborhood everyday?? Are we supposed to feel sorry for her without all the facts?? And the 5 strokes comment, is that related to the issue at hand or is it also just to stir up our emotions??
@amandaharig1978
@amandaharig1978 6 жыл бұрын
Michael Wassef And your commentary is ignorant of the testing criteria already obfuscating this crisis. Allow me to point this out: there are 2000+ counties in the US of A that have already been identified as have similar drinking water profiles/inefficiencies. Of course the EPA/State declared this safe and assured the populace that all was well -- they can't allow a precedent to be set for the rest of the country. G'damn.
