Since Netflix released "Drive to Survive", Formula One has absolutely exploded in ways and places that no one ever really expected it to. Drivers like Max Verstappen and Lando Norris are now household names in entirely new parts of the world, but how did that happen, and what makes this type of racing so compelling to watch?

I've been a huge F1 fan for about a year now after watching the documentary, but I think I have to disagree with your concluding statement that F1 will always have you on the edge of your seat. Drive to survive certainly will do that, because it's made to entertain. Actually following F1 is something entirely different. It's way more of a "slow burn", especially as we're entering another era of dominance. As you said, conditions like in 2021 were historical, and likely won't be repeated in the next years. Some F1 races are simply boring, and don't include much action. What draws me in, is witnessing the "bigger picture": Keeping up with news, developments and updates across the whole season, changes in driver line-ups and so on, and of course the unpredictability that anything could happen during the races. What I want to say is that I can imagine some people coming to F1 from watching DTS with the expectations of adrenaline fuelled, heart stopping racing action every week could be very disappointed because that is simply not what F1 is.

that is a very insightful and thought-out comment. I think I'm coming from a place of growing up in NASCAR country, where the races are twice as long and have twice as many participants. To me formula one is sort of a compressed version of that which makes it seem a lot more hectic and unpredictable by comparison

@@studentofthegameIt's interesting to note that something like NASCAR has more unpredictability, which could be good or bad depending on your perspective.

Much of the US push is due to the new owners of F1's media, being a US company

F1 was a sleeping giant because it was ruled for decades by a technophobic oligarch who used telegrams(not the social media) as late as the 90s/2000s

For me, Indycar is the most addictive. Even tho there are clearly 4 teams that are better than the rest, the results and winner is still unpredictable. I used to love F1, but since 2013 with the exception of 2021, it’s always been a story of 1 team dominating every weekend during both the RB and Merc days

F1 is most and foremost an engineering competition. Aka who is able to build a good car and have a driver that can win with said car. Then there are unlikley underdog stories but they almost never happen but when they do it's really awesome but most of f1 races are just mid and I say that as a fan.

Just found your content and this is phenomenal I love that your branching out and covering a widest variety of sports. All I ask is for a video on beach or indoor volleyball in future. This is amazing stuff and I’m sure you’ll find a place with some of the best channels like this out there ( baseball doesn’t exist and jimmy high roller )

I used to be a F1 superfan in the 2000s, the cars and tracks got neutered, the historic mom and pop teams went away, all the dysfunctional sides that were brewing for decades got turned to 11, then I found myself with no reason to watch and I got super confused when DTS happened around the same time and F1 became cool again. Shows how far promotion can get you, the previous owners/promoter stopped caring ages ago and only wanted to sell rights to out-of-touch legacy media and sell races to whatever murderous tyrant wants to improve their image that day(this part hasn't changed).

What would be particularly interesting is to know how much of this is different from US Indycar, particularly for someone who knows F1 much better. Aren’t the physical and psychological requirements the same?
@mooreanonumbers

The thing with IndyCar is that physical and psychological requirements vary wildly from one race to the next because tracks are very different from one to the other

Oddly, I think Formula 1 is easily the least interest automotive discipline. IndyCar, World Endurance Championship, various GT3 series, and many others provide RADICALLY better racing, but Formula 1 has the best television presentation of any of those, and that's all that matters. And, bluntly, it's especially all that matters when you're presenting it to a new audience that doesn't understand the nuances of racing wheel to wheel.
