I noticed as The Nanny progressed Fran's voice became ever more raspy but I never knew her to smoke. I wonder if throwing her natural voice to do the nasally "Fran Fine" for six years (and numerous takes) damaged her vocal chords. Or if it was an unrelated medical issue.

She mentioned in her book Cancer Schmancer that she was taking medication for Hashimoto’s disease, which is a thyroid condition. That might have contributed to her change in voice.
