Recorded at Caius College on November 22, 2021.
Dr Peterson recently traveled to the UK for a series of lectures at the highly esteemed Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. This was the first of said lectures.
After some remarks on Cambridge’s beauty and rich history, Dr Peterson examines the significance and history of clinical psychology. Drawing from the likes of Carl Rogers, Freud, Maslow, and Jung, this lecture investigates free speech, the value of structure, ways to approach mental illness, Jordan’s clinical experience, active listening, relationships, and the golden rule for conflict management.
// SHOWNOTES //
[0:00] Intro
[1:30] Start of speech
[3:10] Dr. Peterson reflects on the beauty and integrity of the University of Cambridge and the effort by Dr. Orr to make the talk about free speech possible
[4:20] How studying clinicians Carl Jung, Carl Rogers, Maslow, and others helped Dr. Peterson both professionally and personally
[6:20] Dr. Peterson stresses the importance of being an active speaker as well as an active listener, and explains how Freud “let people reveal themselves to themselves”
[12:30] Dr. Peterson’s approach as a formally-trained cognitive-behavioral psychologist and conflict resolution advice for people who are in an intimate relationship
[16:10] Dr. Peterson describes Carl Roger’s technique as it relates to conflict management
[23:00] The importance of having an overarching structure that unites a family for peace and harmony within a household
[26:00] Dr. Peterson explains why “free speech is not the freedom or right among many”

Mmmm, I’d say he suppresses his emotions in that he undoubtedly channels his frustrations, disappointment, and anger towards leftist marxists into his ultra meaningful discourses. "Free speech is all the oppressed have". TRUTH. As someone who grew up in a very oppressive household, I can confirm. The only time I ever felt even the slightest bit of freedom was when I was away from my mom and able to converse with friends in situations where I thought my mother wouldn't hear and she fought that heavily. Preventing me from seeing my sister and friends, going through my Facebook messages, demanding passwords to accounts, leering over my shoulder when I was online, standing right outside the door listening to all my conversations, forcing me to say things I didn't believe under threat of punishment and forcing me to keep secrets under threat of punishment. That shit took a massive toll on my mental health and I would rather die than give up my freedom of speech. I will have my freedom of speech or die defending it. Those who have not experienced having their speech suppressed have no fucking clue what an insane mind rape it is.

when i first came to japan i got a job in an english conversation school, and was surprised at first that many of our students who came just for free chat sessions were sent by their psychologist. apparently there was a freedom to be found in communicating in a second language, and especially so with non-japanese people, and that was therapeutic. looking into it more i found that a very large portion of the people coming there (as in not just the ones encouraged to by their psychologist) did so because they found it relaxing to be able to discuss what was on their mind, because japanese society has very tight limits on what is acceptable discourse. moving on later to teaching in a high school i have to say the best part of that job was the variety of things students had to talk and write about. on our yearly student feedback sheets i often got comments of the type "i like this class because the teacher listen to anything." i certainly hope i made at least some small dent in the outrageously high levels of youth depression and suicide in japan, and of course i fully understand and agree with dr. peterson about the importance of free speech both in society and also for the individual human mental state.

I used to work with an engineer that was from China. He did not speak english very well, but he could talk like no one I had ever met. I worked the midnight shift on the weekends, 5P to 5A. This man would work 16 hour days, and on the weekends would sleep under his desk to make sure he was there if something went wrong. He was in the US on a work visa. When he wasn't actively working on something, he was sitting next to me, talking about anything and everything. I thoroughly enjoyed talking to him because he was enthusiastic. It wasn't until he explained the third year experience of a visa holder to me that I understood why he had spent so many hours with me just talking. He wanted to learn english, he wanted to be an American. Those 6 or so months I spent working with him, talking with him, opened my eyes more than any other time in my life. Being in the US meant more to him than anything in the world. His drive and ambition to do whatever it took to maintain that life made me appreciate him and his work ethic more than anyone I have ever met. It made him insanely happy to ask me questions just to hear me speak english so he could learn, even if it was from a redneck. Unfortunately, I lost contact with him. JD, if you're out there buddy, you changed my outlook on life and work and what I have being an American more than you'll ever know.

Or people just hear a negative critique from someone else and just adopts the same critique without a sliver of research done. This type of thing is not unique at all to Dr. Peterson. After three hours of exhaustive escalation, I finally sat down and tried to put together his argument in a way I could understand and didn’t stop until he was satisfied that I had gotten it right and I marveled as all the anger dissipated until all that remained was our ideas, naked and vulnerable and only partially formed. We realized that we both have a lot of learning to do. As flawed and mortal creatures we felt the same. And there was the peace between us of which I’ve so often dreamed. Consistently I return to Peterson not to learn how, but to learn why.

@@3ZEBRA Yeah true you can say whatever you want, but it doesn't mean you're "allowed" to say it. For example, my tweet may be deleted if I mention political issue x, and that happens in many different countries. Hate speech isn't allowed (not saying it should be), but you can be jailed for saying certain things which may be your opinion, but society doesn't want to hear. So yeah, there's also social issues, like you always have to be careful about what you say all the time with most people. So whilst the idea of "free speech" sounds good on paper, in reality, we're all constraining what we say all the time, quite often for fear of repercussions. So I just think the notion of free speech is a bit of a joke IMO.

Jordan, I am 48 years old now. I was in the 80's and 90's a punk rock kid. My youth was peppered with indignation and rebellion. I still at least in some degree carry that feeling and spirit to this day (although with less aggression and angst).m I think that past helped me see through the malignant ideologies today. I honestly stumbled upon you in what to me was almost "Shock and Awe" at what society had become. I went from a man who was ADAMENTLY against religion, to a man who understands at the very least WHY others NEED it. I already understood and nodded along at "Take responsibility", and was glad to hear someone articulate at the base and emotional level why these tenants are ESSENTIAL. This subject of ALL of those subjects, to me, is most dear. Free speech is the floodgate to tyranny. The minute that goes, Tyranny is soon to follow. Not just governmental free speech limits, but EVEN SOCIETAL NORM free speech limitations are pernicious. The encroachment of 60's "new left" ideology, wrapped in new sheep's clothing is the scariest, encroachment on those liberties I have personally seen. Not only that, but the SPEED with which it changed to this new cancerous style infectious ideology was shocking. You sir, are a light tower in the foggy seas. You are a voice of reason AGAINST that swelling tide. I really appreciate the reason and LOGIC that you bring to these emotional times! I thank you good sir, You are an unlikely hero to me!

Since we don't all agree in the west to, say, slice criminals heads off in the street like Saudi Arabia. And not saying one way is better or worse depending on the society and whatever else, but that is what he means. Corrupt religion is just a layer on top that sucks for sure. But if we didn't have that basis of human value from our history we would live in a way worse set of Countries. Let me know what you think. JBP could absolutely delve more into errors of the Church, and he was pretty tough on the Christians and Catholics he's talked to on his podcast. I thought that was well done. Edit: I don't know why I just wrote all this out... ignore it if you want, maybe a bible basher will stumble upon and it will give them to think a little more critically about their faith I'm a staunch antitheist - I think organised religion is a corruptive force in the world in general. My grandmother attends a parish and it ostensibly brings her consolation so I can appreciate that, but I also just had a classmate who failed our psychology course because she refused to accept homosexuality, contraception and abortion as she was a devout Christian (from Kenya, where the missionaries had stripped away their pre-existing belief systems and forcibly converted them to Christianity no less). See how it pollutes modern minds with foul edicts and preachments by primitive patriarchs. I've read all the foundational texts and see no value in them at all. It's obvious there's not a grain of truth to any of it - the various books and gospels all contradict one another enough to conclude that much. Maybe they helped keep order in the tribes they governed but they're obsolete now. The 10 commandments are obscene; the first 4 compel love under duress which is sadomasochism, the next lot are just basic human decency and the last one punishes thought crime and offers a warrant for slavery. God is portrayed as a jealous genocidal maniac, Jesus is a hysterical preacher who's preachments hardly even make sense. Even C.S Lewis concluded that he must have been some raving doomsayer if he ever did exist. JP is misguided when he extols its provenance of morality in the west. It only ever reforms to the bare minimum when its forced because public morality porgresses. Antisematism was still an official doctrine until the 50's. And it has the audacity to consider itself the moral authority in the world whilst it harbours child abusers even among prelates and members of conclave. As I mentioned, the only concession I give religion is it's source of existential support for the downtrodden and feeble minded, but even so it encourages people to retreat into fairy tales rather than confronting reality as it is and in this sense it's a hindrance to human progress, not to mention it boycotts science. If it weren't ever challenged we would still be living under a suffocating theocracy in the medieval. To terrify children with imagery of hell and to teach them that carnality is sinful is child abuse even before the rape. We need to stop forcing it down children's throats and allow them to gravitate to it in their own volition. Of course the church knows that would be the deathblow since they need to strike whilst their targets are too young to think for themselves. We're getting there though. I also get this sinister sense when speaking with some pious that their faith is the only thing preventing them going on a rampage of rape, pillage and murder. I really hope I'm wrong about that

Sounds like your experience was poisoned by generation-based patriarchal dysfunction. This is from either parent, but the term is a clarification of how, “father knows best”, so do not challenge him. Without knowing your scenario specifically, it sounds like all family members entered into a silent agreement to never challenge the person(s) who spoke into falsehoods and illusions. With freedom to speak as an equal, you would be able to CONSCIOUSLY speak to WHAT IS and not what the person(s) were dreaming up or lived in a delusional experience about. Living this experience teaches people to believe anything they hear. They develop very few opinions and follow others easily. This plays right into the hands of the person spinning tales and calling them the truth. I wish you the best. JP is fantastic! Devour everything. Then challenge it. Always challenge what you believe. Primarily, how the citizens of a society en masse, could perpetrate such atrocities against their neighbors with such calculated cold blooded disregard for their humanity. I am neither naive nor unexposed to the reality of the existence of evil that can be manifested by human beings on one another within the confines of societies or situations where the rule of law or rules of engagement reign. But for the manifestation of unadulterated evil to be the society itself, is nearly beyond comprehension. I would venture to say, that if The Gulag Archipelago were a work of fiction, one would be hard pressed to convince most readers that the atrocities described on the level and for the duration that they actually occurred, would ever have the slightest chance of manifestation.

Something we often take for granted is the different ways that we comprehend our thinking between when we speak in our minds and when we actually vocalize the thoughts externally to others. Both can produce different means of interpreting our state of being in a moment. That is another function of freedom of speech--to better understand the clarity of one's own thoughts and state of being.

I’ve thought about this too. I’d add on to it. Here is a top down approach. There is the thought externalized, conveyed to others. There is the thought internalized, deliberately produced in the mind (such as speaking in the mind). And then there is the even deeper thought, that isn’t deliberately produced, that is unconscious, and of which is understood faintly. Now that I think about it, this resembles the Freudian concepts of the id, ego, and superego

Brings to mind an apartment I had to show to potential tenants for my landlord one evening about 7 years ago. For some reason it took nearly an hour just to get through the front door. The key just wouldn’t turn. Although, I had been to the apartment before with my landlord and the key gave me little resistance upon turning it. So, I found it highly odd that the key suddenly wouldn’t work out of all the instances in which it should be. The couple I was showing the place to even tried turning the key. Still didn’t work. It was as if someone inside held on to the deadbolt as we tried to enter. Ultimately, I was able to get us in once I turned the key the necessary way it needed to be manipulated. Can’t remember how many shakes and jiggles I gave that key. But, I was certain I had the correct key. So, we get in and turn on lights. Do a quick walk around downstairs and suddenly footsteps were heard. We all heard them. Naturally, I was asked if anybody was in there. To which of course I told them there shouldn’t be. So, we head for the stairs towards the upper rooms. More footsteps are heard and the couple and myself paused and listened. Sounded like someone had darted across the hall into one of the bedrooms. At this point we’re all suspicious of each other. But, I was confident nobody else was in there. My landlord and I made sure the place was sealed tight earlier. So, I bravely ascended the flight of stairs, turned on more lights and eased the worry of the couple. The husband then followed along with his wife. We then proceeded to check out the rooms. Windows were still locked and not a soul was to be found. Comfortable with what we saw compared to what we heard, we all unanimously laughed the heartiest of laughs. We were in utter disbelief because we know what we heard. Just couldn’t believe it with our eyes sorta thing. Finally, we came to the conclusion we had seen enough and left the apartment how we found it. The couple never did rent the place, and I of course moved.

In this analysis of how free speech is so necessary for people, Dr. Peterson also reveals the absolute necessity of learning to really listen to others even when we don't agree with them. Perhaps especially when we disagree with them, in fact. Thank you for sharing this, Dr. Peterson. God bless you and your family, sir.

Yes! So many times when I'm listening to someone I disagree with I'll dismiss them altogether by convincing myself they're operating out of bad faith without inquiring into why they think the way they do (because speaking of learning I found myself doing this in class recently). But it's pretty hard to tell whether people are being genuine when they say things that sound akin to some ideology they might have integrated.

@@lmnop01 yes, it’s an instinctive reaction to try and shut out things we don’t like or agree with, but it’s a real sign of immaturity in people as well. I struggle with it too, but I find that homing in on the idea of seeking common ground gives me motivation to keep trying to listen and learn. There’s an awful lot which I learn about people when I try really hard to listen and figure out what exactly they’re trying to communicate. It can be difficult because so many people nowadays utterly abuse the English language that their actual ability to articulate ideas and concepts instead of just emotions is really very limited. Much more limited than the person usually understands. I’m almost certainly guilty of it too.

Jordan, your impact on the broken people of this world is one of the greatest paradigm shifts in history, you are a prodigy of your environment. Many times I think of the factors and circumstances that forced you to become who you are. Many times I wonder what am I not seeing, what do I not know about you, the hidden trials and tribulations you have encountered, the untold stories you never share, the unwavering pain you internalize that most will never understand. Your work (a massive social experiment) is one of the most important work's in human history I believe. I will have to buy you a beer one day and bullshit with you, because many times the greatest insights come from the most unlikely of places.

He really finds open discussion and freedom of speech a fundamental human value and right, and no bloody wonder. We love Dr. Peterson because he is humble. He is not arrogant. He is honest. He is compassionate and kind. He is sacrificing his own health to save others. He will go down in history for sure. I practiced psychotherapy for 30 years and I will tell you that after seeing thousands of clients over the years I became ill and was diagnosed with MS. I found myself in a dark place during Covid and knew I had to give up my license to practice because it was killing me. Make no mistake, Jordan’s health issues are related to the work he is doing. He knows it will be the end of him but it is worth it to him. His whole life has been about aiming for the higher good. He is finally doing that and helping millions. I think he knows this is his cross to bear and I get it on a very small level. If you are a person of faith, please pray for him fiercely. We must hold him up. That means we will be helping him to help others. Does that make sense? Who’s with me? ❤️🙏😇
