I would like to add some information about how we feel about "l'empreur macron". The reason that people really hate macron today is because he lost the last parliament election. His political party ended up behind the left. In all of European country, when a president lost the majority in the parliament he must choose a prime minister of the first party of the parliament. But the king macron decides that it's not like this. He said "nobody won, so my government will stay". French people are in a bad situation. Rich French people are really happy about the situation. But the number of poor people increases. The others européens country thinks that France undergoes a crackdown. It's really difficult for people to live with just one job. The left party can help us and restore the country. But macron decides to just enjoy the Olympics games and let French people dead. Please share this video, french people need help.

During the last legislative election, most people who voted abroad voted for Macron's party. It was my first time voting abroad and I feel like they don't do much for French expats maybe only for the richest part. I don't understand why the French school abroad is expensive. To me, it doesn't make any sense also but still, many of them would pick his party... 3 years left with him. He made a mess in France

I understand his personality is very aloof, and this can be offputting, but on a personal level, I agree with his overall prognosis that France needs to offer more economic oppertunity in order to move forward in the world. For a long time, many in France had no real hope for upward mobility because employers didn't want to add people, and this especially affected the most vunerable communities like those in the Banlieue. I do realize how important the social safety net is for the French identity, and a balance has to be struck. The left has only one idea and it's one that eventually runs out of steam (or rather, money). The far right is worrysome, but so is unchecked immigration. France cannot take in the whole world and should have the right to determine who gets to come, especally since so many people have no desire of being "Of France" rather than just soaking up the benefits of being *in* France (which is two totally different things). Anyway, I don't mean to stir the pot, but this is my view come what may. Once again great video and I hope the French people can settle on someone who intents to unite the French nation rather than divide come 2027.

In Australia the age you can receive an “old age pension” is 67. There was interest in increasing this to age 70, but the idea was dropped as it would not be practical for people working in strenuous jobs (such as bricklaying or sheep-shearing) to work until 70. Many Australians retire from work at a younger age, but they are self-funded

The French pension system is specific, it is not a system governed by the State but by Social Security. Social Security is a system which is quite unique in the world, I believe, and which dates from the Liberation of France from the Nazi occupation in 1944/45 (thank you to all American, Canadian, Australian and other veterans who contributed to this). At this time, the main French business leaders were prosecuted for collaboration with the enemy and condemned to indignity. The economic organization of France must therefore be rebuilt, without business owners, but with workers' unions, most of which were banned during the occupation and whose members were part of the Resistance. Social Security was established at that time with the principle that everyone should contribute according to their means, but receive according to their needs. The contribution of the richest and the employers was therefore the most important, but it was the poorest and most vulnerable workers who should receive the most. But these contributions are not taxes paid to the State, but insurance contributions (for retirement, for health, for unemployment, etc.) paid to and managed by "funds" managed equally by representatives of employers and those of workers. But over the years, employer representatives have increasingly challenged this system, which is not really favorable to them, and have pushed the government to intervene in the management of the system to the detriment of worker representatives. Thus, the Government decided that employers would be exempt from social contributions in many cases, that the contributions of the highest salaries would be limited, then indicated that with the aging of the population, the system could not hold if we did not did not delay the retirement age (while in fact the system has difficulty holding together because of all the reductions in contributions decided by the Government). In short, Macron's Government takes the French for imbeciles, and we don't like that...

I've always wondered this. Macron always seems to say the right thing in his televised speeches and stood for progressive and environmental reforms. But then of course I don't live in France. Now I understand how he has talked out of both sides of his mouth. I don't know who he is. I understand the frustration and I commend citizens for saying, "no more!" He blew it.

I like him and do think he is doing and done a far better job at managing the country and foreign policy than any of his counterparts across the political spectrum could ever hope of doing. The main reason for this is that he is more pragmatic than ideological, and that is a breath of fresh air.

Everyone complains about their elected, whether or not they can outloud (for fear of punishment). Here in the U.S. it's a business, the news and pundit comedians make their living off of complaining and criticizing. The public are regular arm-chair politicians with opinions abound. It's not peculiar to France or anywhere, it's human.

Thanks Theo. A retirement age below 65 or more seems very generous and with people living longer and having less children- it will be difficult to maintain. As someone else commented eligibility in Australia for the age pension is 67 but most have some private retirement accounts as well

I'm from Malaysia you know that country next to Singapore? I have a really good opinion of Macron and I am a fan. I follow him on Twitter and Instagram. I really want him to visit my country someday. He keeps ignoring the asian countries lol But yeah, I understand that his politics favours the rich. And he is somewhere in the center so gets attacked by both the left and the right. He made mistakes but I don't think it is easy to govern France. And after 7 years of course people are tired. Maybe people will appreciate him when he's gone?

Macron is dangerous and responsible for our debt. he is not the only one responsible but he increased this debt. it serves the rich who do not pay their share to society. it accentuates poverty and strengthens the National Rally. he abuses the constitution. he hates France, supports the US and Israel and destroys diplomacy and its influence abroad. He wants to be king. His wife would have deserved an investigation because sleeping with a minor under her authority as a teacher is reprehensible.

The main thing in my opinion is not so much the person of Macron who is criticized in France, it is everything he embodies. The problems that we know today in France are not new, the thing is that Macron's political party has highlighted all the dysfunctions of our 5th republic, the French more than a new president want a renewal of institutions. As it stands, the president has exorbitant powers that he do not hesitate to use and abuse to pass laws that the people and the national representation in parliament do not want. Where is democracy when the presidential minority can do without parliamentary debate to vote for unpopular laws? (see the example of the constitutional procedure of 49.3)

As an American I like Macron and the leadership he brings France to an international scale but for France there are certain things that I don't agree with. I understand the frustration the French have towards Macron but France has always been a safe space for me when the American government is the worst (like between 2001-2009 and 2017-2021). Vive la France 🇫🇷

Malaysians love to bemoan their leaders, sometimes it is justified, but in any case it doesn't help the situation. I had a favourable view of Macron but that seems to have soured somewhat as increasingly he hasn't performed internationally as a world leader should in my humble opinion. We shall see. I'd like to see what happens if Melenchon becomes president of France.

In the US, Macron is generally viewed positively. Of course, we don’t focus on your internal politics, so we don’t see it from a domestic standpoint like you would. However, when a candidate or party in France is deemed extreme by our media, they’re described as a “far right” or “far left” party. On a personal level, I have a great appreciation for French culture. However, economically it appears as if the French are never happy. Everyone seems to want the government to institute generous social programs to provide everything for them, but the taxes necessary from the wealthiest and the business world to fund that will stifle the growth of the country necessary to sustain those same social programs. Conversely, while lowering taxes would stimulate growth in the economy in France, it would eliminate many of the social programs and would change the social structure and nature of France. The end result is a series of promises by politicians, none of which can ever be fully met.

Macron addressed the budget and the retirement system that was not sustainable. This angered a lot of people but was necessary for France to become aware of the financial reality. He also tried to address the Ukraine issue and to support their sovereignty. Europe must be aware of Russian agression and stand united. These are clear issues which have left him open to criticism from both the left and the right.

From the USA. EXCELLENT! Your presentation was clear, organized, full of facts both new and historical. Your presentation skills were very good. Passionate but not too overwhelming. Every country is disappointed in their elected political figures. Here is why - I will use President Barack Obama as an example. Here was a man who was mixed raised. He was half African and half Midwestern US. People here who are white nationalist and racists were against him because of the color of his skin. They paid no attention to the fact that his white mother had a Phd.(Doctorate in Anthropology) Because his mother traveled a lot in Asia for her work, so his white midwestern grandparents raised him in Hawaii. His grandmother was a Vice President in a bank. His African father had nothing to do with his upbringing after the age of 5 years old. His thinking was that of a white person. He attended Harvard University, one of the best schools in our country. He was the first mixed raised student president at Harvard of the Harvard business Review aa periodic newsletter that is read by corporate executives. He is extremely intelligent, extraordinarily well spoken with a calm, clear composure. All the markings of a great leader. While in the White House, every bill he put forth to help Americans and to modify our democratic process was shot down by the leader of our Senate White Nationalist, Mitch McConnell. McConnells Asian Billionaire father-in-law gave him 24 million dollars to run his last campaign in the state of Kentucky. He was up against an Air Force Lieutenant who fought in recent war and who would have been a better Senator for the state of Kentucky but lost because of the large millionaire and billionaire population in the state who voted for McConnell. In the USA for a president to be successful, we need a majority of the same political party in the three branches of our government - 1) House os Representatives, 2) The Senate, and 3) The Presidency. But it is always the President who gets blamed for the failures. Check out how much support Macron had in your government to further explain his failures. Research how many proposals and laws he tried to activate but were blocked by members of your government. That topic would be an excellent topic for one of your videos.

Bonjour Theo Great topic. I'm from the U S and have wondered what the Parisian's opinion of Macron is. I'm honestly uninformed about politics in general including my own country. I'm embarrassed to admit that, therefore I don't really have an opinion of Macron. I don't know if you Parisian's have heard what's happening currently politically in the USA as you've got much more worthwhile things to do what with hosting the Olympic games. It is an election year here in November. It seems as though our Republican party is most popular now especially since candidate Donald Trump dodged a bullet, literally thus surviving an assassination attempt. And as for the Democratic party our current President Joe Biden has stepped down and our V. P. Kamala Harris has stepped up in his place. We'll see come November.🤔

I’m an American living in Paris now. Bonjour Theo! My impression of Macron is usually positive, as you said he was a new idea for France. In the US we usually don’t know much about other countries and their leaders. Americans think the world revolves around them. That said, the president in the US usually starts out loved and ends up unliked. Except for Trump. He started off despised by many, many people. We still do. Having Kamala Harris now running against him is a great deal. We are excited again. I’ve been alive since Kennedy was president. In all these years I don’t remember people being afraid of what the other party might do in off to the extent of this fear of Trump. People still like Joe Biden. He’s just so endearing. Anyway, I hope I answered your questions. Au revoir.
