I've only been making videos for a few months, but I've already found myself falling into the "I should be recording this" trap any time I try to play a game. It's easy to lose track of just how much more energy goes into creating content versus playing a game for personal enjoyment. That isn't to say that you can't enjoy making content, just that it's important to be aware of the difference.

Exactly what I'm struggling with as well. I also keep hearing people stream like 12 hours a day too. Idk how the hell they actually make content if they're just streaming all day. Hopefully we both figure it out well 😂

Hi Dan! Thanks for this important reminder! You're right, burnt out due to playing games (+ making gaming content) is real, lol. Not to mention the very tight competition that gives you the pressure to post a new video very quickly to get more views every time a new game is released. Gaming has lots of sub-niches and each has its own challenge, and also its own strategy to grow. Really appreciate this video and looking forward to your next one about gaming! 👍🏻

There is just 1 advice here: START UPLOADING! AND DO IT REGULARLY! That is all you need. After certain ammount of time, you will develop everything, from how to speak, to new ideas for your videos. Also, copying other people ideas, modifying them a bit is a MUST, so ye, just go, go and never look back!
@DexTag2 жыл бұрын
My take on it is: -You are not playing. You can stream and play there in a real hobby way on top of it, but the rest is doing exactly what works and what brings people in. -Ignore subscriber counts, they mean nothing. I dont mean subs dont mean anything, the opposite is the case, but your focus should always be that every video is viewed as a growth video. If you do something you already did 10 times, still explain it. To a less degree, but your goal is bringing people in -If something doesn't work, drop it. Don't invest more time into it. If you enjoy it, you can do it on your own, in streams or possibly as extras/on a side channel, but the main channel should be focused -thumbnails catch attention, title will convince, but the content is what makes people stay and subscribe. All 3 of these are very important -Dont listen to subscribers, and I dont mean this with ill intent. I mean that a few loud voices will always exist and shift your perception to the bad. For them its a fun playing session, for you its your potential future or current job. The voice of the viewers is the views, watch time, views per viewer and subscription amount -keep a close eye on your growth. The longer you remain to one game, the more you exhaust the pool of interested people. If your growth declines too much, you'd be better off to find alternatives, even if that means less views for some time. There are some games that are exceptions to this, mostly the games that manage to get in millions of people each month, but aside from those it's a deadly trap -if you take KZbin as a job, be aware that you are not looking for an income equal to a job. Expect your KZbin career to end way sooner, but not only that, it's also a lot more volatile. One month might triple your old income and the next one might quarter it. Now obviously it should not be this extreme and if that happens, thats an alert signal, but my point is that there is more risk than you might assume -Jump on trends. Try them out and see if your audience likes them. It happens often that new trends do well in the beginning, then it depends on how you were judged. But in most cases, those will bring in a lot more people than your usual videos -Ignore complaints but be aware of negative trends. This plays into the previous point of "dont listen to comments", but I want to empathize that this does not matter to you, your measurements are on the videos performance. Milk anything as long as possible to grow as fast as possible, and when you notice it fizzles out, slowly start to implement a shift to other things. Abrupt changes can cause major upsets, so I dont recommend them If you want examples that pretty much perfected this, check out Legs Game It Out and DangerouslyFunny.

Also keeping “for fun” games separate from “work” games is super helpful

I'm still in the learning phase this bit of advice is very helpful, so I appreciate all the info. Yes focusing on one game allows you to build that community, the problem is I can't keep to one game for too long, or I would burn out, instead I do variety. But where I focus on is keeping to one area of gaming, for example gamepass games, I play them on my streams, I play them with my community, I am even working on adding reviews focused primarily on gamepass games. All I'm saying is listen to advice of videos like these but pick what is relevant to you and not just follow all the advice especially if you don't enjoy it. It's better to grow slow and passionately, than fast and miserably when you are not creating.

This video popped up in my feed so I thought I would watch it. IMHO The very good advice here applies to any sort of YT content creator. One thing I have worked out in the year or so since I started my channel (never having done anything like this before) is that the key to success isn't in having the best equipment, the best skills or the best personality, it's *making videos people actually want to watch*. Simples. Regards the 'time pit' surely the real answer is to have some other hobby when you finished work? I mean I make videos repairing stuff, but I don't repair stuff when I'm not making content, I play games or read books (SciFi/Horror mostly) instead. As for the sort of gaming videos I would watch on YT (as a very casual gamer), it's either the ones where I can learn how to get past some point in a game where I am stuck, or the ones reviewing some game I may be interested in playing. And if there are several relevant videos, I always click on them and try to find the ones where the creator is actually talking as well as showing the game play. Those ones always get my watch time.

I think the most important aspect of being successful is to have a great presence. Some people do voice acting or acting lessons to get better at that. If your personality isn't entertaining all money and all gear in the world won't save your channel. This should be the main focus while on the side trying to improve other things like audio and video quality, titles and thumbnails, and content strategy. I am saying that since I literally focused on everything else but my own presentation. So my delivery still sucks and pulls down everything else that I do. And honestly, I think if you are not a natural then this part will become the hardest thing to master. But it is worthwhile to pursue no matter how long it takes. It is an important life skill. Not just a youtube thing.

I think you should personally look at KZbin as a hobby especially if you're not making money. When you look at KZbin as a job, you're constantly worried about views, subscribers, how often you upload, and much more. You will burnout quicker to the point where it nearly makes you want to quit. This is happening to one of my good friends right now, and he isn't even a gaming channel. Don't push yourself so hard. If you lose focus on having fun with your content, you won't get anywhere. Always remember having fun with this is your top priority. Take your time with growing, because you will get there one day.

I agree that to begin with you need to figure out if you enjoy CREATING CONTENT. You already know you enjoy the things you do in your video, but sharing that passion with an audience is a different type of discipline. But eventually, when you start to get better at creator and more people watch, and you realise you can make money from it, you have to take it more seriously, if you want to make it sustainable.

As a magic the gathering youtuber i know how hard and frustrating it can be. Especially in my case because i just started a new channel since i ruined my old one using google ads promotion. Even though ity's really hard for me i'm not being demotivated because i know my new channel is making it's first steps in youtube and that the algorithm need time to find my taget audience. So as i upload on a daily basis i also make sure to learn how to edit my videos thumbnails, animations i put in my videos etc. And i actually enjoy the learning proccess even though it was really hard for me to learn all those stuff at the begining.

Spend some time working on thumbnails bro, your content might be legit fire, but nothing about its presentation makes it look inviting. You're fighting in one of the biggest and most saturated gaming spaces with Minecraft and you have 95% no thumbnails for your content. Take some screenshots and play with Canva for a few days, it's free and easy to use, mobile and desktop. Hope you keep going and growing 👍🖤💚💛

This “brake” concept is cool but it’s hard to find time to take a brake when you work a “real job” have to record, have to spend hours editing, and still find time for family. I do love making videos tho. The grind is real😮💨

Thats why i switched to doing gaming animations... my first channel was a normal gaming channel and it made me hate playing games over 2 years. Now all I do is animate games which let me turn normal gaming back into a hobby because I don't stream anymore so I don't have to be extra hyped (and kindof fake for entertainment) recording everyday and now I love KZbin again.

I just started my gaming youtube channel, and i've a lot to learn still. I don't mind making some (newbie) mistakes nor have the right gaming setup, like a better PC, but I do appreciate these type of videos which helps me to slowly, but surely improve my channel. Thanks a lot for the info and for everyone reading this: keep having fun doing what you do.

Wanted to say thank you for this message. I needed this. Like many others I started recording everything I play. I felt like everything I did needed to be recorded and uploaded at some point. It feels great to now sit back and select specific games I will use for content. The rest I can just sit back and enjoy and never worry about using it for content. Gaming for content can sometimes change how you approach a game. Having games that are just for us will help keep that separation of work and play.

What an awesome video. You nailed it. I burnt out about a month ago for just these reasons. I imposed a rule where whatever I'm working on I stop at 9PM and play some games for just me. no streaming or recording as yeah, they make it so you can't totally unplug and relax. THIS video made me remove the word 'hobbyist' from my channel description today. thanks for the eye opener.

As some comments already said: Making videos and streaming while playing games you actually enjoy and making money off of it seems like a dream, and it may be, I unfortunately can't give my experience on this as I am not monetized yet, but that's just a small part of the business. There goes so much more into this to build a long term sustainable business and to make a living off. Great video as always tho 😉.

It's true, a gaming channel can be difficult, I have tried many, but in the end if you're doing it for fun, I don't see any reason to care whether it's good or garbage, just have a great time and if people like it, they like it, chances are it will be somebody's cup of tea. If you don't look back at your old videos and think they were bad, then have you really learned anything?
@AnchMOICE22 жыл бұрын
I needed this video. Gaming, Tech, and Anime is life for me. So I focus my content on that. My Seasonal Anime list and Unboxing videos always do better than my actual gaming videos. Also, how can you focus on one game? Especially when you play mostly RPG’s and not shooters? Eventually you’ll have to create content on another game.
@vidIQ2 жыл бұрын
Plan in advance the 'next game'. What do you think your audience is likely to play next (so the next RPG, shooter, driving game, adventure, horror etc)? Then you can start to do crossover content and slowing build the ground work for that transition.

I have a gaming channel and honestly it takes me about an hour to put make-up on, put a wig on. Styling the wig takes a lot of time. Editing takes a massive amount of time. But I've been enjoying it. I don't expect to blow up. It's a way to connect with people. I just see it as a way to improve my editing and social skills. And also it's a way to test things on KZbin. When I stream I always think if I'm gonna have a minor goal or a story. Streaming definitely doesn't feel like casual gaming for me.

Spend more time watching tutorials on editing and improving audio than watching other gaming content these days. Started my channel 14 months ago with the instant mindset that if I want this to be my job I need to treat it as a job, and work it as a job. Until I get paid its all an apprenticeship, learning to get better at the job I want. Then Its bottom rung of the business ladder and working my way up. Building my schedule up and taking breaks have been key to consistency over the past 14 months too.

Some time ago I decided: if I play games and do YT content with them, why don’t I STREAM them? A week later I decided that I will not do that full-time, because regular streaming actually takes away my chance to rest in my favourite game, which WILL lead to a burnout sooner or later. Amazing video, straight to the point!

This is good advice. I have a day job making 6 figures but I wanted to turn my hobby (gaming) into a side hustle. I started by writing down a plan and realized gaming itself is just a fraction of what’s required to produce quality content. Gaming on its own is not very marketable. It’s similar to trying to be a professional musician because you enjoy playing the guitar.
