If millennials didn't change jobs every couple of years, they'd end up making something like half as much. The boomer way of sticking with the same job for 40 years is gone because employers think they can get away with skimping on raises even though they'd pay more to hire a new person.

100% - it's a false narrative Boomers make against Millennials. These are the same people who ostracize Millennials for living at home and renting - when they all bought their houses for what would now be $50K 20 years ago and now its worth $2M.

There's quite a lot that could be wrong with quitting a job and trying to find one you like more. This generation makes me laugh. It's like responsibility and needs take a back seat to pleasure and emotion. At some point we have to recognize that there are needs which require sacrifices and compromises. Quitting a job because you don't "like it" is not a valid reason at all. There are legitimate reasons for switching jobs/careers, but that isn't one of them.

I saw my dad pursue the "stability" route. He was "laid-off" probably 20 times. Now he & my mom are divorced and neither can afford to even come close to retirement. Not for me, no thank you. I feel absolutely ZERO loyalty for an employer beyond doing the job I'm paid to do. And don't even get me started on their "diversity" programs. I want to do a job (preferably remotely, if possible), and leave and live my own life. My job is not my family. My job is not my religion. My job is not my community. My co-workers are not my friends. My job is not a political outlet. My job is MY JOB. End of rant.

In my area plumbing, welding, mechanic companies charge $150 plus an hour yet complain they can't fill the positions for $12 an hour. They said they aren’t anti work from home towards the end of the video. They are just making people aware that you are at a higher risk of losing your job if you are a remote worker which is backed up by data on the topic. “Out of sight, out of mind”. I worked remotely for the headquarters of one of the largest international corporations. A lot of our US work was offshored to India and while we were making 5-6 figures doing the same job, they we’re getting paid pennies over in India compared to us. So there is an actual threat because if the job can be done remotely then it can be off shored. So a safer job is one that can’t be fully remote.
@kstar1956
@kstar1956 Жыл бұрын
@@Giordano1998 if that's the case then all jobs related to TECH can be outsourced! These jobs could always be done remotely it's just the pandemic forced companies to do it sooner. Outsourcing jobs is nothing new, if a company shareholders are more concerned with upping revenue it doesn't matter if the job is remote or not, they will do whatever they need to do to meet profits so if that's layoffs or outsourcing they will do it and that's the fact.

The remote work comment is invalid. Remote work has been possible for a long time. If there was ever a consideration to off-shore a job, then it would have been done a long time ago. Coming from someone who works in IT, remote solutions (VPN, cloud, mobile device management, etc.) have been available for over a decade. There is lots of upward pressure on wages. 90% of the time you need to leave to get better pay and/or take your career to the next level. There is MASSIVE competition in wages for people who want to work in person. My buddy got turned down for a 12% raise and promotion... he got a job elsewhere and gave himself the promotion and an 80% raise.

We quit are jobs because working for “the man” isn’t worth it. There’s far more to life and growth than having someone else place a ceiling over your head and dictating your growth for you, especially in a place you may not like. The key for Millennials and Gen Z is finding the companies that align with personal values and needs. They exist, but older generations are not paying attention to that shift in society. The terms Gen Z and Millennial have such a stigma attached to it and that’s a huge part of the problem too. Change happens so adaptation is needed on both ends.

The quitting isn’t about searching for employment that would help you thrive, but about having no motivation to remain reworking for compensation that doesn’t even guarantee survival. My close friend who's the father of 2 is trying to find a 5 bedroom house in Atlanta GA and its a nightmare. His 2 children are a boy and a girl, they are in high school so they cannot share a room. His mother was dying in the hospital of heart disease and she moved back in with her son because the company she worked 40 YEARS FOR was owned by a man who STOLE EVERYBODY'S PENSION, left, filed for bankruptcy and then died. Her and her coworkers couldn't sue anyone because there was nobody to sue, the money was gone, nobody to be held accountable. She didn't know that she was supposed to take steps to protect herself in case her boss STOLE THE ENTIRE COMPANY'S RETIREMENT. Because surely there were laws in place to protect someone like her? Some kind of insurance the government provides to keep working people safe? no, there was nothing. My friend works from home and needs a large office for his job. He now has to go from a 3-4 bedroom, possibly apartment, to a 5 bedroom ranch style home (for wheelchair access) that can support this giant family he's now saddled with because of the negligence of our country. And his children are *seeing* this, and they don't want to be involved in a system that deliberately neglects the needs of their family. He anticipates that they will have to live with him in order to survive here, but I wouldn't be surprised if they grew up and immediately left the country. Now that we have the information of the world on our fingertips, we know what the entire system *actually* looks like. We don't want to be mindlessly tricked into participating in a society that we can obviously see does not value us. We're not having babies, and we're not staying loyal to any job. Everything in this country is about money. Healthcare is about money. Shelter is about money. Mental health is about money. Relationships are about money. Being able to retire and be taken care of when I'm too feeble to function iS ABOUT MONEY. Money money money. You know what? We're playing along now. If you cant pay me better than the other guy, I quit. You go find a worker in India and I'll go find freedom.

We had off-shoring for years, and companies ended up pulling the higher end work back because of quality issues. Lower tier work like front-line phone support is still exported, but high end software development (for example) is kept more in house than it used to be. The bigger (or at least more immediate) threat to earnings isn't USA vs other countries but rather small town vs big city. "Why should I pay a NYC/San Francisco salary when I can have someone working remotely from Omaha for tens of thousands less?" Worker loyalty to companies died with the death of the defined benefit pension. When the pension plans were replaced by 401Ks, one of the biggest incentives for staying with the same company disappeared.

Kind of hard to outsource a trade job to India. When I was on a tour in Germany 10 years ago one of our guides talked about their process for entering high school. Tests were given and students who did not show the grades, aptitude, and dedication to study for pre-college were directed to learning a trade school to learn a trade. No student wasted time during those years just coasting in high school.

If you stay at a company long enough, your salary raises and promotions if any will not match the value you bring to the company. As you become more and more profitable to the company, your share of that profit shrinks. Now layer inflation on top of that and your purchasing power is also not keeping up. While the company raises prices all the time, they don’t raise labor costs (wages) if they don’t have to. It’s very possible that after 5 years, another company will pay you 50% more. Many times it’s the same company. They’ll hire a new guy paid 50% more but keep you at your wage.

As a Gen Z novice professional. It's really hard for us out there right now. It's so hard to even find someone to give you even an interview. Ngl it feels nearly impossible. I was injured doing my "for now" job and was chewed and spit out by the workers compensation monster. I cant work a normal job. I tried picking up another temp job a city away as a testing engineer at Digital Storm and they were paying me less than a high schooler working at Mcdonalds and gas prices rose so high all the money was going into gas. Its impossible right now. If I wasn't living with my parents I would be homeless. Almost every other 25-year-old I know is in the same spot or somehow surviving off tips as a waiter/waitress. I am not depressed, its the reality of where we as Gen Z are at.

College is a joke in most cases... paying 100k for some made up degree is insane. You can have a college degree and still be an idiot. When are companies going to wake up and realize that it’s unnecessary to require degree’s for many positions, there are many talented smart capable candidates out there who can fill these positions who don’t have degrees and will likely work for less pay because they aren’t 100k+ in debt.

Translation: You're probably working for someone that really doesn't know what you're doing in the first place. So even if you have goals that are attached to your job and frequent performance reviews that determine if you're reaching the goals (including weekly status reports and one-on-one meetings with your leader), it doesn't matter because it's all about feeding that person's (or their boss's) ego by being able to see you in the same building that they're in. As long as they can physically see you (you can call it feeding that person's ego or "networking") and say "hi - how are you doing" face-to-face, your job is more safe than the person that proves their productivity and flexibility no matter where they are. 🤔

I discern that deep down the talk show hosts would like people to stay with the same job like their parents and grandparents did. Our society no longer functions that way for several reasons. One, is we live in a "hire to fire" organized state of employment. It's been this way for some time and people are tired of it. It's narcissistic, toxic, and destructive. And these employers are sending your job offshores at the same time anyway. I will end it there. I understand not all employers are like this and are worth the respect. Its just the workforce has become too toxic and enough is enough. Just so you all know, I did become an entrepreneur and do work part-time for a private small business employer and life is very wonderful. However, 20 years of my life wasn't so wonderful and it has been the scenario I previously mentioned at the beginning. I have witnessed so many hard workers go through the same hardships as I have in my area. Again, people are getting to a point where enough is enough.

By the way the banks never even had the money to lend out in the first place, they get all the interest money pretty much because they have a license to counterfeit. Fractional reserve banking. Who's getting rich? Not you. The money just doesn't care. The money isn't even real, it's a figment of a control system.
