It’s overblown and a highly case by case basis. The only fellow Veterans I’ve seen have these issues by in large were in that situation by their own making. More often than not, other Veterans I’ve seen have a rough time after service were in such a predicament because they didn’t study their VA benefits and procedures before they separated from service, waited years or decades to file claims (and didn’t research how to properly file claims), they didn’t reach out to any Veteran Service Organizations, and/or they didn’t simply plan for what they wanted to do in some form or fashion after service. Also - big deal if you can’t own a firearm. Seriously, not owning a firearm is really not a problem.

As a former Army Recruiter, the reason is a little complex but I promise to be brief. Recruiters use various demographic analysis tools that mainly come from the real estate industry are able to tell us what kind of people live in various zip codes. One main issue is the average IQ of a demographic and it’s been dropping steadily in the past 15 years as our southern border is wide open and we’re being flooded with illegal immigrants and their average IQ is 75 and the minimum IQ to join any branch of the US military is 83. The population that has a large amount of smarter people is the white race. Now I’m talking about a large number of people and not smaller minority ethnicities such as Asian which is slightly higher that Western European whites. White people have had plummeting birth rates for over 60 years due to liberalism convincing young people to not pursue motherhood. So throw in “fat acceptance” and an unbelievable amount of high school drop outs and the pool of potential recruits becomes tiny. GED’s may be fine for the dropout but it’s almost worthless for enlistment aside from a minuscule amount we allow to join at the end of the fiscal year but they must score high on the ASVAB test. We found that GED holders have a high dropout rate, they usually quit the Army within 72 hours of Basic Training and call their mommy that they’re coming back home. So far it’s around a 50% dropout rate so we always double slot the job training seats to account for the amount of quitters. A persons IQ comes from their parents which can either be good or bad. When I was recruiting in California near Oxnard, nearly every Hispanic person we tested completely bombed, they had less than a 5th grade reading level and these were high school graduates! Single mothers/fathers is also a disqualifier, there must be both parents or a signed court custody order for the person to join. Then throw in drug use, we test for all drugs and marijuana is the biggest problem, it may be legal in the State you live in but not for us, we just have to make sure it’s been a few weeks before joining the Army, all branches screen for drugs. And all this is before we look into a persons criminal and medical background, it’s just nuts as to how hard it is to find what we’re looking for.

The Army only pretends to care about you up until the point where you're counted as a number in their recruiting statistics. After that you're worthless to them. I joined in 2018 during a 6,000 troop shortage and I suffered from starvation at in-processing. I had to fight passing out every morning while others vomited water due to their empty stomachs. Recruits were not allowed to use the bathroom so they peed on themselves. A girl I knew had to stay behind because her knees got infected and they wouldn't let her get treatment. I was even called a liar by the drill sergeant when I did not have any towels in my bag so I had to beg the other recruits for their extras. Even the civilians were straight-up extremely rude and disrespectful. Every day it was made very clear to us that we weren't wanted or needed there. Then in basic I was sick with severe chronic bronchitis, weighed 96 lbs due to constant vomiting and coughing, and wasn't allowed to go to medical until blue phase. When I did all I got was simply cough medicine which did nothing for me. The only reason I was able to pass all my PT tests is because of the training I did before I joined. Pain and heart tolerance while running everyday prepared me more than anything else. After that you are sent to AIT, which is prison school. You can't go anywhere by yourself. Not even to turn a corner or go to the dumpster. Doing anything at all becomes 10X more difficult. I was screwed out of my machining certs when I was put in night classes, so that simply is another tell-tale sign that the Army doesn't care about MOS proficiency. Finally, you end up in your unit, and if you're lucky you'll get to do your job. Otherwise, you're stuck doing endless worthless details which is going to cause early burnout with nothing to show for it. Let's also not forget the complicated six-event ACFT, and the mandatory PT you are required to do with your unit every single morning. This PT is not efficient enough to prepare you for the ACFT test so you have to go to the gym after work and use up even more of your slim free time. Soldiers often get injured because they are not given enough time to rest. I thought I was going to be stuck with knee problems for the rest of my life due to an over-use injury (thank god for covid). The other branches don't have issues like the ones I just presented. Whenever they are stationed in places that have joint AIT they see us being treated terribly and become embarrassed for us. We really are a laughing stock to them and it's sad af. We go through way more abuse for way less benefit. The Army simply can't compete with the other branches in terms of quality of life and MOS training. My service was a complete waste of time and I got nothing out of it. That is why we have a 15,000 troop shortage. Toxic leadership destroyed the Army in addition to all the other issues I presented. Veterans are telling their kids not to join and I've done my own fair share of getting the word out. The greater the shortage the better because then it will force the Army to change. Edit: Some of the toxic individuals who have served for 20 years like to come on here and call me a liar and say that I'm exaggerating, but everything I said here is the truth. This is why you should always take their opinions with a grain of salt. We're talking about modern-day Army and this is just a small amount of the BS I had to go through. If you think 'wokeism' is the Army's biggest problem today you need a reality check.

It's the military. If you expect their leadership to be "non-toxic," then you're REALLY not going to like dealing with terrorists! Military culture is all TEN-HUT!!! and SIR YES SIR!!! and all that shit because it's traditional, it acknowledges the chain of command. They treat you like shit until they've beaten your ass into the state it needs to be in to be a professional terrorist-hunter, and if you don't like that you're welcome to look for a job as a Kindergarten teacher. Christ people, your role in the military is to KILL PEOPLE, that's your JOB! And people are bitching about "toxic leadership"?! Anyway, boredom, depression and low pay are the reasons people leave their jobs. Even in civilian life plenty of asshole bosses abound, don't think you'll see the day when you won't find them in the Armed Forces!

The issue isn’t just recruiting. Failing to retain the Service Members that are serving is a significant factor that needs to be addressed. A good friend of mine told me there BN CDR said every (1) Soldier they get. The unit loses (2-3), and while reasons for leaving vary person to person. My friend says one of the most common reasons for Service Members leaving in his unit is due to poor leadership. Additionally, the units have to work their Service Members harder due to the known personnel shortage across the military and I can see why people don't to stay in.
@rikoea653011 ай бұрын
Unfortunately this is one of the biggest issues we have today. The fact that we have some military guys and veterans running around the comment section, calling people trash because they shared their story, is pretty much a good example of this. Good leaders care about their troops and want to see them succeed, but often their own narcissism gets in the way and it affects the entire team. I know when I left the Army, several soldiers followed behind, using marijuana to get out, or Behavioral Health, which on my base is a complete joke. Only a couple of them re-enlisted, and those were the people who drove everyone else out. Because of the years of toxic leadership, my unit was dissolved. I really hope that Gen Z will have stronger emotional intelligence, so that they can recognize the bad behavior from the toxic leaders and change force for the better, or at least not be toxic themselves. Until then, I'm just waiting for the next war that we will definitely lose because these toxic pos are running it.

As a Army Vet that served in the 82nd airborne division 504 infantry brigade 30 years ago the largest reason for the shortfall I believe is that conservative rural and small town white straight men are increasingly refusing to join. This demographic has always been the backbone in numbers of recruits for the military. They don't feel like their service is appreciated or wanted anymore. If a war breaks out who do you think is going to be put on the front line meat grinder, the lesbian woman, trans woman filing they/thems nails, or the white country boy from Kentucky, they all receive the same pay and benefits but they are not treated the same. Black Americans have never really trusted the military so their numbers have always been low, so I wonder who is going to be left to service in this new sensitive caring Rainbow military. We haven’t won a war since WWII but we’ve constantly been entrenched in proxy wars ever since. I did 11 deployments between Iraq and Afghanistan. I knew when I was there they had no intention of winning. Dick Cheney was the former CEO of Halliburton which had the largest contract in those wars. It was about the rich getting richer off the blood of the peasants. Six months after the Afghanistan withdrawal they found their new cash cow in Ukraine. They don’t even try to hide it anymore.

You are overthinking this whole thing. The main reason people aren't joining the army is because they don't want to lose the only life they are certain to have running at an enemy and getting shot. Real life is not like video games where if you get killed you just press the reset button and play again. In the past wars were glorified. Now people are fully aware of the reality of war.
@anmonrahman5191 Жыл бұрын
Thanks Uptin for such good video again. There are basically two major issues making such recruitment problems. 1. The uses of military have become so much politicized that even people from military don’t want their kids to sent to there. To be honest military have lost the appeal of patriotism and serving the country. 2. Less facilities and coping mechanism with society have made such situations. So what seems to be a right action for this time is that provide military new recruits with more social and educational benefits and making military environment more diversified friendly. Taking care of veterans is also important equally.

Active Duty Army here. There are good things about being in the military. Many soft skills have improved. I've learned to be more organized, manage my time better and be a better communicator. I even got a wake up call to be a more of a neat freak. I'm also a lot more confident than before I joined; I was much more submissive to authority but now my philosophy is if I had to put up with douchebag NCOs for four years I do not have to put up wIth a civilian boss's BS. The big one, however, is that I saved and invested a LOT of money. The reason I'm getting out is because I'm fed up with the toxic leadership and bureaucracy. The vast majority of NCOs I have encountered have zero business having that title. This is because of the Army's idiotic mindset that "everyone is a leader". Instead of living up to the NCO Creed and being mentors to their soldiers, they bully and harrass you. Sorry, but I can't stand the one-sidedness when it comes to "respect"; leaders and civilians are free to treat you like dirt but you get counseled for standing up for yourself. Because you don't pick your leaders, I can't take the risk of going to an even worse unit. The amount of things that do not get done due to bureaucracy is mind numbing. Paperwork gets kicked back over the pettiest of reasons, CIF won't take your gear back because of a speck of dust, the list goes on and on. I fully support reducing the amount of civilian contractors; they are rude, lazy and are THE single cause of all of the inefficiency.

The A-holes are the ones who stay since they fully know that there ugly attitudes would get them fired in the civilian world. And second, these A-holes who stay on are the only ones left around. I mean, you can't have a 28 year old who has been in the military for 9 years stay on as a Private. It's possible, but not likely. So, they're encouraged to become NCOs, these jerks become REAL jerks because they think someone thinks they're awesome. So now, these jerks become our leaders.

I think part of the reason is that you can't hide operations from the civilian population like you could in the past. They should've learned this in Vietnam, the first televised war, but the Army always forgets almost all of its lessons between wars until something relevant is needed to be dug up again. Start of afghanistan and iraq insurgencies they acted like we hadn't been in an insurgency before.........then they suddenly realized they fought the Viet Cong for a decade in Vietnam and started applying the same tactics. So when the civilian population trusted that Iraq had WMDs and that there was a link between Iraq and Afghanistan (the Al Qaeda member that suggested this link was under torture even) and none of it turned out to be true, every civilian in the US knew that it was untrue. Mini justifications like Saddam was a dick, murdering torturer who let his sons throw pregnant women up on meathooks aren't a good enough justification when the whole country fell into chaos after his deposal. Then they handled Iraq stupidly. They defeated the Iraqi Army and caught Saddam quickly. But then dicked around and fumbled everything afterwards. They deposed the iraq military members in favor of the Shiites. This left the Sunni's super pissed off, unemployed, and as trained military men with nothing to do and their rivals now in power. They had to try and balance resources between two campaigns. Iraq and Afghanistan. Contrary to popular belief the combat arms units of the Army and Marine Corps are actually hella small in comparison to the size of the actual military. So having to switch around your fighting arm to Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria as well as keep them deployed in places like Korea etc put a massive strain on the combat arms during this time. Then they allowed an insurgency of some of the worst religious extremist in history to fester there in ISIS. Our misadventure in Iraq actually COST US the war in Afghanistan because it got to the point where we were sending so many troops and equipment to Iraq that Afghanistan went wild in their absence. In the end, we ended up keeping people in Iraq (even today), and replacing the Taliban with the Taliban. Not a good look for the younger generation who saw the end results even if they don't understand everything that happened to get there and how our own politics at home played a role. There is also things the US Army needs to do different. Forget all this friendly military commercial bs they are advertising to reel in new troops. The US Army isn't about that. Even as a support MOS, your job is to support combat arms, and their job is what every soldier is taught in the Soldier's Creed. To close with and destroy the enemy. The entire organization is about destruction of the enemy even if you AREN'T combat arms. You support the people that are. When you have these happy commercials you get people with an idea of how things should work and then when they don't happen the way they envisioned, they are mad and bitter about it afterwards. When you come in EXPECTING things to suck, you leave your service much differently than the newer generation does. Somebody posted about their experience in reception, bct, and ait and then their service below. It seems pretty accurate to what I experienced except I went in KNOWING beforehand that it was going to suck bad. In reception we averaged two hours of sleep a night, a couple of bites of food at breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and waited in lines for hours upon hours getting gear, immunizations, paperwork etc. Reception was the worst part of the IET experience for me. BCT we got a little more sleep, and got to eat full meals, but were smoked constantly............but I knew it was going to be like that. In AIT I was in a can't get right platoon and we were smoked constantly AND put on extra duty. We got no off post passes, and only two on post passes. The rest of the time we were on extra duty. AIT was supposed to be easier, but I also knew it could be rough depending on how your training platoon got along with the AIT instructors. Ours didn't get along well. I also knew beforehand that it was entirely possible I wouldn't get to work much in my MOS with the way the wars were going. We'd just ceased major combat operations in Iraq but were still going hardcore in Afghanistan, but because we don't have infinite infantrymen every combat arms unit was doing other jobs to free those guys up to deploy elsewhere or being used as quasi infantry themselves. I deployed almost as soon as I got out of AIT, but didn't do anything field artillery, and instead was a quasi MP guy. If the younger generation actually had trust in their politicians, and the US Army actually told you how it was going to be like the old school advertisements and my recruiters did beforehand, I think they would attract more people looking for a challenge. Instead they are almost false advertising and getting people in with entirely different expectations which makes them bitter afterwards. Then they come to youtube and reddit and leave a lasting personal account of their negative experiences for it to be read by the younger generation for as long as humanity last (which probably won't be long). I rejoined in 2023, I think so far the Army is actually better this time around in terms of the actual soldier experience, and even the physical training is easier than it used to be.............but it still sucks. You just have to be one of those people that likes when it sucks. If you are a young person considering the military, especially the Army or the Marine Corps, just know that you are joining branches whose PRIMARY FOCUS is to close with and destroy the enemy in close combat. To kill them. To give them dirt naps. To spill blood and make the green grass grow. This shouldn't be a pleasant experience, and the existence into such a reality is often times shitty. But killing people shouldn't be easy either. Just know this beforehand. I hope you enjoyed my mini essay on the subject.

13p was my first MOS back when they had all the FDC MOS separate. Now it would be 13j. But yes, I was in a HIMARS unit first. I'm currently a 12b awaiting another MOS change. I literally never did my FDC job. We deployed, we acted as MPs, I got back, there was an MTOE change that dropped a firing battery for every battalion, and ours was the one dropped. So we were told we could reclass to anything we qualified for, or stay in that unit which became a FSB as support mos, or go somewhere else as 13p/13m. So I reclassed into something that was a little bit more like I was looking for. I don't actually regret that deployment though.

Gen Z generally does a good job of doing their homework before committing to something big. I've been approached by numerous Gen Z's asking about my time in the military and what jobs in the military really do. I've prevented a lot from getting shafted, but I've also helped some make the decision to join after I've dispelled the stigmas and myths about specific jobs.
