I was also thinking the movie makes more sense if its seen as a story about modern United States rather than Ancient Rome as a historical fact.

yes, the motivations of the characters felt more modern. Their personalities were ripped straight from our times.

My favorite part of this movie was when it ended.
@astronomer7475 күн бұрын
Ridley Scott seems clueless when it comes to script quality. I think even Russel Crowe had budded heads with him quite a bit over some of the lines in the first film. My guess is that Crowe did make it quite a bit better even if he was a pain to deal with.
@Alachia4 күн бұрын
I don't know why they keep giving him tons of money. Must be all about connections.
@astronomer7474 күн бұрын
@@Alachia Well he is a good director, just well past his prime. He made some of the best sci-fi films. Alien and Blade Runner are very good, and I actually think Prometheus is pretty good. But he just stopped caring I think.
@astronomer7474 күн бұрын
@@Alachia Ever since the 2010s or so he hasn't made much that is good. One indication of how lazy he has gotten in old age is that he filmed Gladiator II with multiple cameras with no depth of field like his earlier films had. Then he just pieces together the film and gives the cinematographer a nightmare to work with and the SFX team cleans up the shots. He turns out so many films and its all about efficiency over quality. John Mathieson was very critical of the way he shot that film.

I havnt seen the movie yet but some of my friends who have seen it . Basically it's no way as good as the first gladiator movie , not just in terms of story but russel Crowe was just an awesome actor with such a presence in that movie an of course the Hans zimmer score. That movie is legendary . Gladiator 2 is larger and more grand but acting performances are not great, apart from maybe Denzel Washington. Basically go in with low expectations, and enjoy watching gladiators fight and hopefully one should be entertained. But i understand when you mention none of the gladitorial battles felt threatening , which is not good , a circus show is not what gladitorial fights were supposed to be about most of the time. Historically however some fights were just a show especially when there were expensive , famous gladiators that were not expendable . Interesting review.
@Vaporious20007 күн бұрын
I feel like the revenge plot line could have worked better if Acacius had actually killed Lucius‘s wife himself, and Lucius saw it, but was unable to save her due to one of Acacius’s men getting in the way or something. That way it feels a little more personal and better justify why he’s going after Acacius specifically. Also, you could have Denzel‘s character encourage Lucius’s revenge path because it makes him easier to manipulate but eventually Lucius realizes the error of his ways and all that(thanks to his mom and Acacius himself possibly).

So I’ve thought about it before going into the film but it is possible he conceived Lucius with Lucilla and then met and fell in love with his wife a few months later and then had his son - all in the same year. That makes it possible for the two boys to be the same age. It is possible for this to be true. Lucilla could have got pregnant with Lucius as Maximus’s son and not told him - especially when she saw later in the same year he had met the love of his life and wanted to start his own family, and thus he would never have known Lucius was his son. I so wish they had stated this timeline clearly in the film!

She's alive!! Alive!!!! 😊🎉🥳🎈 Almost a ONE YEAR hiatus. Welcome back! I admire how she doesn't acknowledge her hiatus. New viewers will be obvious. Just another video. Skipped Gladiator II. Not a huge fan of the first film, although I really should rewatch it again. I have no recollection. Unfortunately, Ridley Scott has gotten old and lost his touch. I'm afraid his last great film was The Martian (2015). Alien (1979) is his magnum opus. Hiring H. R. Ginger on Alien was his greatest directoral dicision. Arguably, hiring Jordan Cronenweth as Cinematographer on Blade Runner (1982).

It was exactly what I expected (in a bad way) but had some cool moments that I rather liked so I can't complain too much, it could never come close to Gladiator 1, but a story that didn't feel like recycling the original's would have been nice.
@Dunybrook10 күн бұрын
I'm not an expert on ancient Rome but it looks like there was a lot of dramatic upheaval after the death of Commodus that they could have made a good movie out of. If they really wanted to make a movie about a gladiator who rebelled against the leadership of Rome you have to wonder why they just didn't remake Spartacus.
@Alachia10 күн бұрын
AMEN. a remake of Spartacus would be amazing. It is so epic in scope. The original is great but could do with new graphics and more authentic dialogue.
