Why GM Is Killing The Chevy Camaro After 57 Years

Since it rolled into dealerships in 1966, the Chevrolet Camaro has been one of the most famous American pony cars. It was General Motors’ answer to the Ford Mustang. It was also an affordable sports car - speed, muscle and even track-ready performance for a blue collar price. But the car is soon to disappear from GM’s lineup. GM is saying little about future plans, but facing a changing market, the company has been stripping sports cars and sedans out of its lineup for some time. It is also investing heavily in EVs. Some say an EV version of the Camaro could be a possibility. Fans hope it will return, but that the car can retain its classic appeal.

@Marc Torres Not really. 2 different platforms (chassis), different engines (direction injection vs not having direct injection), different interior and exterior. From a non cat person view, they look the same. From a car person view, they are not the same. Want to talk about not changing a vehicles looks for decades? Look at a Challenger, Charger, Tacoma, Wrangler or a GT-R. The differences between a 5th and 6th gen Camaro (exterior) is much more noticeable than those.

They’re not ending it at all. This video is either clickbait or just wrong. GM says a new Camaro will be released sometime after the current gen ends as a 2024 model.

My mom bought a Camaro in 67. It was Butternut yellow with gold interior, and by that I mean everything was gold: seats, carpet, headliner, steering wheel, everything. It was a 327/ 210 hp, two speed auto with a console. She paid 2200.00 for it new. Five dollars got you filled up from dead empty. Those were the days.

My family’s first car when we came to America was a 76 Camaro. Not really sure why, since it’s not a family car and there were four of us. Years later, when I turned 16, I was going to fix up that Camaro. I remember people coming by wanting to buy it because it was 25 years old. My dad donated it to charity. I almost had a stroke.

Car prices are outrageous compared to what they used to be. A young adult in the 70's-80's could buy a brand new car 10x easier than they could today. Now a car, like a Camaro, which was the cheaper sport option is reserved for the same people who bought Corvettes. It's no surprise they are cutting all these iconic names. It's not like people don't want them, they just can't afford them.

@MaverickRE
@MaverickRE 10 ай бұрын
Honestly this is a simple fix. #1 Redesign it to make it a bit more like the Mustang. Make it more user friendly so that the average customer will consider it. #2. Be like Ford and make sure you have so many unit on lot at all times. #3. Stay away from making it EV. GM doesn't seem to understand that their client base (Especially for the Camaro) doesn't want EV. It 100% destroys the heritage of it, it doesn't have the rumble, that feeling that Camaro's, mustangs and Challengers have. They want vehicle with character and I'm sorry but EV's just aren't that. #4. All of the auto manufacturers can't not continue to take losses. So EV's are only going to get more expensive as these companies have to make a profit. So all the manufacturers should make it simple. Let Governments fine them and put those fine costs into the EV's MSRP's. If they all stood up for each other, the government will back off because they will have too. Simple.

GMs best ideas always came from rogue visionaries not from committees. The Camaro/Firebird rivalry was a bit of genius because GM supplied both of the competitors. after the last Camaro reboot the Camaro was competing against Corvette another car from its own stable . The styling of the recent Camaros is somewhat bland and subtle for the high price.

I like the way they put that. Camaro was the answer to the mustang in 1967. Unfortunately, Camaro is unable to answer the Mustang anymore. They died off in 2002, and now they are dying 2:34 off again. Chevrolet seems to be having difficulty doing anything these days. Who was the nincompoop that approved those nasty front ends? It’s time to sit back and let the big boys do the muscle car thing.

Not sure why the crossover, a needlessly tall, un-aerodynmanic, heavier vehicle superseded sedans which handle better, are safer, offer a locking trunk and are just plain more fun to drive. With our sedans, we raised kids and all their crap, , carried my extensive video equipment, and with folding back seats, my road and off-road bikes away from the elements, all without having to drive a top heavy, unsightly box on wheels, instead of a car. It's my belief if more people drove the equivalent sedan over the SUV model they would see (and feel) the advantages. Sadly, our choices for rear drive, high performance sedans are pretty much limited to German, Swedish, Japanese and Korean options. The 25 year old Dodge Charger, is the sole popularly priced American sedan. RIP sedans.

To me, the 4th-GEN Camaro Bodies will last the longest because they were made out of "Dent-Resistant Plastic Composite" body panels with "Fiberglass Hoods" on the SS models. Only the quarter-panels on the 4th-GENs were made of "Metal", which was stupid of GM. The entire car should have been made of "Plastic Composite". No Dents and no Rust with "Dent-Resistant Plastic Composite" body panels, I have a 2002 SS. The 6th-GEN Camaros should also be made of either all "Dent-Resistant Plastic Composite" bodies or all "Fiberglass / Carbon Fiber" bodies, no "Aluminum nor Metal Body Panels".

Let's not forget there was a huge gap between 2002 and 2010 when there were no new Camaros. So it isn't quite 57 years. Also, the age of the small, impractical 2 or 2 + 2 sportscar or ponycar is kind of gone. Sales numbers for these kinds of cars are very low, performance of "normal" EVs is so good that the V8 ponycars are lagging behind. With the low CG of an EVs the low bodies of ponycars no longer provide a big advantage, and it has simply become a drawback. They lack space, you sit low, you can't see well, etc... They became niche.

Repair and replacement parts for Camaros were so expensive in the early 90's and I know of a handful of '80's Camaro owners who dumped their Camaros rather than maintain or repair them. So many beautiful cars went to junkyards way too early when it was too expensive to keep them running. Do they regret selling their Camaros today? Probably all would say YES, if money had not been an issue. This, of course, is not a Camaro-only issue. But it was a big reason why so few classic Camaros exist today -- it seems like there are way more older Corvettes than Camaros around, for example.
@soundseeker63
@soundseeker63 10 ай бұрын
This mandated shift towards electric cars is a tricky issue facing all sports and enthusiast marks, not just the GM brands. What is a muscle car without a rumbling V8 and the option of shifting cogs yourself? What is a Porsche without a flat-6 in the back? What is a Lambourghini without a screaming V12 behind you? The sound and character was not incidental with these cars, but a defining (and desirable) feature of them. EVs might work in daily-driver type family cars and luxury cars where silence and detachment are ok, but it's much more difficult to engineer-in character and involvement into an EV sports car and I will watch with interest how manufacturers go about attempting this. That being said, if you are fortunate enough to own one of these petrol powered cars, look after it and hang onto it, because they will never be made this way again! The Camaro name may return at some point, but this is the final chapter of "original recipe" Camaros and sports/enthusiast cars in general. It is the end of an era.

From an economical standpoint of view, I can fully comprehend the discontinuation of the Camaro, it wasn´t worth to hold it on. From a german petrol head perspective it´s a sad moment, every time such icone disappears. I´m even happier that in 2020 I saved myself one of these last Camaro masterpieces, a manual shifted 6th GEN ZL1 in beautiful silver ice! It´s an incredible car to look at every angle and perspective, combined with an insane driver feeling and bloodcurdling sound.

Camaro and Mustang owners have 1 thing in common, they both love their cars and enjoy driving them. However, the auto makers forgot what drove sales in the beginning; having an entry level, lower cost model that the owner could upgrade on their own and make it 'My Car' instead of the Ford or Chevy dealers version. Yes, EVs are coming but not because they are so great but because we are being forced into that market by the Government. Eventually the power grid is going to go 'no mas' and then what happens?

GM has said (not publicly) in the past that the Camaro directly competes with their Corvette. For a while (not sure if is still true) they both uses the same power plants so you were getting a 'vette engine for 'cheaper'. Which of course people figured out and it ate into their vette sales. I imagine that is, at least, part of the reason as well they just dont want to say that.

I remember writing about the possibility of a 5th Gen Camaro in 2002 for a college writing class. GM has never learned the lesson of how to preserve brand legacies. It’s not about retro styling, which is equivalent to the Hollywood “80s reboot” craze. It’s about allowing new technologies to evolve, while keeping the purpose and function of a particular car brand the same. A great example is the Impala SS. The ‘94 to ‘96 Impala was brilliant, because it evolved while still being what an Impala was meant to be: a full size mid-level luxury passenger car with enough muscle under the hood to make driving fun. As soon as the Impala became a wimpy, mid-size, entry level economy car, it died a slow, horrible death. The GMT400 trucks are another great example. The 90s reimagined look for the C/K series of trucks and rebranding them as the Silverado and Sierra didn’t diminish the customer demand for a solidly built truck with an interior and fit & finish a step above entry-level Ford and Dodge half-tons, while there was still plenty of demand until 1991 for the previous generation “square body” C/K Series.

@@TheRealJLucas, but that’s the thing: Buicks were selling like hotcakes to Chinese businessmen as the better investment per gross vehicle weight compared to BMW, Mercedes, and Maserati. Pontiac was just the “driving excitement” brand guys like Bob Seager would drive (saw his ‘63 Catalina in a car museum in Amarillo, TX). Let’s face it: GM has always bent the knee to politics because its that bureaucratic, feudalist mindset that’s required to acquire successful car manufacturers like Chevrolet into a single parent company, and do stupid things like sabotage Pontiac’s performance line by refusing to let them use forged connecting rods while only the Camaro and Corvette get them in the 60s, or limit marketing of the GNX and ‘89 Trans Am Indy Pacecar that could smoke the Corvette with a 3.8L V6. As much as I’m in love with GM tooling and branding, it needs to be broken up, or GM just needs to commit to each brand under their banner producing a certain type of vehicle (GMC for trucks, Chevy for general purpose cars, Pontiac, Buick, and Oldsmobile made more into brand packages for Chevy cars for the type of luxury and performance one wants, and Cadillac as the de-facto luxury car/SUV brand).

GM made the 6th gen Camaro too much of a sports car. The Alpha chassis was significantly better than S550 (stiffer/lighter/better handling), yet it became about 4 inches too small for casual buyers. Unfortunately, the American market cares about size over performance, hence why the Mustang and Challenger sold better. Speaking of the Challenger, it's on a 20 year old chassis that is absolute garbage, yet it sold incredibly well because Dodge focused on it as a muscle car rather than a pony car. The best car does not always win.

GM and Chrysler announced the end of the Camaro, Dodge Charger and Challenger at the end of the 2023 model year. As far as the 57 years go, don't forget the gap. The only Pony car that has stayed in production since the day it hit the street is the Ford Mustang. As far as the Camaro outselling the Mustang in those last figures is because people were buying them up while they are still there. The Must nag isn't going away anytime soon Just a little FYI. In 1985 I was car shopping. It came down to a Camaro RS or Mustang GT. I called my insurance company to see what i would be paying. After I got off the phone I called 2 more companies. My choice was made. A V-8 Camaro was $800 more than a similarly equipped Mustang. Even the 4 banget they had in 1985 was $500 more. The Camaro was considered a sports car and the Mustang was a 3 door coupe. Go figure. I had my fun.
