@Marc Torres Not really. 2 different platforms (chassis), different engines (direction injection vs not having direct injection), different interior and exterior. From a non cat person view, they look the same. From a car person view, they are not the same. Want to talk about not changing a vehicles looks for decades? Look at a Challenger, Charger, Tacoma, Wrangler or a GT-R. The differences between a 5th and 6th gen Camaro (exterior) is much more noticeable than those.

Car prices are outrageous compared to what they used to be. A young adult in the 70's-80's could buy a brand new car 10x easier than they could today. Now a car, like a Camaro, which was the cheaper sport option is reserved for the same people who bought Corvettes. It's no surprise they are cutting all these iconic names. My mom bought a Camaro in 67. It was Butternut yellow with gold interior, and by that I mean everything was gold: seats, carpet, headliner, steering wheel, everything. It was a 327/ 210 hp, two speed auto with a console. She paid 2200.00 for it new. Five dollars got you filled up from dead empty. Those were the days.
@pokor57917 ай бұрын
And people averaged $87 a WEEK (source Chi Tribune from US Census data), you know like $2.18 an hour, so the car cost 1,000 hours of work before taxes. The Camaro was an average cost car then. An average car cost $48k now, but that is very much sent off average because of the stupidly high cost of trucks and luxury cars that were not popular in 1967. Even so the average salary today is $29.7 an hour so yeah it is more than 1000x more, but the vehicle is objectively much less polluting, much safer, much more powerful, much more efficient, and more reliable. So the thing is now are the days.

Not sure why the crossover, a needlessly tall, un-aerodynmanic, heavier vehicle superseded sedans which handle better, are safer, offer a locking trunk and are just plain more fun to drive. With our sedans, we raised kids and all their crap, , carried my extensive video equipment, and with folding back seats, my road and off-road bikes away from the elements, all without having to drive a top heavy, unsightly box on wheels, instead of a car. It's my belief if more people drove the equivalent sedan over the SUV model they would see (and feel) the advantages. Sadly, our choices for rear drive, high performance sedans are pretty much limited to German, Swedish, Japanese and Korean options. The 25 year old Dodge Charger, is the sole popularly priced American sedan. RIP sedans.

Honestly this is a simple fix. #1 Redesign it to make it a bit more like the Mustang. Make it more user friendly so that the average customer will consider it. #2. Be like Ford and make sure you have so many unit on lot at all times. #3. Stay away from making it EV. GM doesn't seem to understand that their client base (Especially for the Camaro) doesn't want EV. It 100% destroys the heritage of it, it doesn't have the rumble, that feeling that Camaro's, mustangs and Challengers have. They want vehicle with character and I'm sorry but EV's just aren't that. #4. All of the auto manufacturers can't not continue to take losses. So EV's are only going to get more expensive as these companies have to make a profit. So all the manufacturers should make it simple. Let Governments fine them and put those fine costs into the EV's MSRP's. If they all stood up for each other, the government will back off because they will have too. Simple.

I remember writing about the possibility of a 5th Gen Camaro in 2002 for a college writing class. GM has never learned the lesson of how to preserve brand legacies. It’s not about retro styling, which is equivalent to the Hollywood “80s reboot” craze. It’s about allowing new technologies to evolve, while keeping the purpose and function of a particular car brand the same. A great example is the Impala SS. The ‘94 to ‘96 Impala was brilliant, because it evolved while still being what an Impala was meant to be: a full size mid-level luxury passenger car with enough muscle under the hood to make driving fun. As soon as the Impala became a wimpy, mid-size, entry level economy car, it died a slow, horrible death. The GMT400 trucks are another great example. The 90s reimagined look for the C/K series of trucks and rebranding them as the Silverado and Sierra didn’t diminish the customer demand for a solidly built truck with an interior and fit & finish a step above entry-level Ford and Dodge half-tons, while there was still plenty of demand until 1991 for the previous generation “square body” C/K Series.

Pontiac was just the “driving excitement” brand guys like Bob Seager would drive (saw his ‘63 Catalina in a car museum in Amarillo, TX). Let’s face it: GM has always bent the knee to politics because its that bureaucratic, feudalist mindset that’s required to acquire successful car manufacturers like Chevrolet into a single parent company, and do stupid things like sabotage Pontiac’s performance line by refusing to let them use forged connecting rods while only the Camaro and Corvette get them in the 60s, or limit marketing of the GNX and ‘89 Trans Am Indy Pacecar that could smoke the Corvette with a 3.8L V6. As much as I’m in love with GM tooling and branding, it needs to be broken up, or GM just needs to commit to each brand under their banner producing a certain type of vehicle (GMC for trucks, Chevy for general purpose cars, Pontiac, Buick, and Oldsmobile made more into brand packages for Chevy cars for the type of luxury and performance one wants, and Cadillac as the de-facto luxury car/SUV brand).

GM made the 6th gen Camaro too much of a sports car. The Alpha chassis was significantly better than S550 (stiffer/lighter/better handling), yet it became about 4 inches too small for casual buyers. Unfortunately, the American market cares about size over performance, hence why the Mustang and Challenger sold better. Speaking of the Challenger, it's on a 20 year old chassis that is absolute garbage, yet it sold incredibly well because Dodge focused on it as a muscle car rather than a pony car. This has been a long time coming because of the poor sales, Chevy, and GM in general just didn’t push this car enough and the 6th gen deserved more. But Ford was smart by not strictly making the Mustang an EV, but having an EV crossover in the family and I think if we do see the Camaro again , it’s going to be strictly EV.

These companies are killing their V8s due to government regulations and fines for creating low fuel mileage cars. Dodge and GM combined had to pay $363 MILLION in 2022 for the sale of cars that didn't meet mile per gallon requirements. That's why these cars are going away.

Over the years Camaro, Mustang, etc... have come to look more like every other care. Corvette was going that way for a decade or so, but now has reinvented a new look different from most cars, but similar to some high end European high performance cars. I guess 60 years ago there could be more niche styled cars because the total market was smaller. Now the market is bigger makers want every model to sell a lot of units.

The 6th Gen wasn't a bad looking car, but the design didn't appeal to the masses the way the Challenger and Mustang did. If you notice Camaro used to have lots of commercials when it sold well and had "ahead of its time" design. The second gen and the Thirdgen with the IROC Z had everyone and their moms wanting one. The reason they got cancelled in 2002 was the same issue, an unenthusiastic response the the 4th gen re-design. Again, not a bad looking car, but not liked by as many people who loved previous designs. The death of Pontiac was not good for Camaro sales either. The F-Body platform with Firebird and Camaro had strong roots and heritage. The newer Camaro is a Cadillac platform. Better, but also more expensive. A Camaro used to be style and fun first so everyone wanted one. If you knew what options to get some were quick but they had T-Tops, V8 rumble and were a party on wheels for cheap. Like if a Jeep Wrangler was a sports car. Camaro owners were content to let Porsches that cost 8 times more win because they were having more fun for far less $$$. Now that Camaro has to keep up with luxury and exotics they can get really expensive. If you look at GM marketing its 100% Truck, SUV and now pushing EV. If marketing = sales then there's also part of your answer.
@kevinsmith8003 Жыл бұрын
To me, in terms of aerodynamics, both the 3rd and 4th-Gen Camaros and Trans AMs are as close to the "Corvette-Feel" as any of the other Camaro and/or Trans AM Generations, with the front pointed bumper noses. Thus, in spite of the low head room, I am keeping my 4th-Gen 2002 SLP SS with a 6-Speed Manual.
@nwezetx1 Жыл бұрын
That wasn't the issue. GM wanted to get out of its agreement with the Quebec plant and I recall there being some clause, that prevented them from switching factories. The plan to bring back the Camaro, was already whispered verbatim around the industry in the early-mid 2000s. Bob Lutz knew something that the public didn't obviously, St. Therese plant had to go, but doing what they did was an open secret for years.
@JCMusicwriter Жыл бұрын
@@nwezetx1 could be, but when the 4th gen came out it was outselling the Mustang for a couple years (over 110,000 units) and once the did the facelift in 1998 they were under 50,000 units and plummeted to 23,000 units. Mustang sales did the opposite. I do remember them wanting to get out of their agreement with the Quebec plant. They had a lot of drama from what I heard when they shut Norwood down in 1987. I heard the stories from people that worked there during the Third Gen run. They gave away the last Norwood car to an employee so as not to totally collapse morale. Still shows how Chevy really always treated Corvette better. Aside from the Thirdgen and even the beginning of the 4th gen you can tell just from the marketing they were excited about what they were putting out. And even now the press videos on the C8 and Z06, you can tell Chevy is proud of that product. That’s part of the story as well.
