I worked with young operators that schooled me on GPS....LOL, I schooled them without it. NOT A HEALTHY BALANCE but when their GPS system goes down, I'm still up and running. Great vid

If they think auto-grade is the only, or best part about having GPS, they have a lot to learn.
@TheLeverMonkey3 жыл бұрын
there are a lot of guys out there that rely on the GPS system to make them that top guy. Not me I love the GPS systems but still rely on my skill first to interpret what the engineer wants/intent was for the GPS model. The models I dealt with were made to max limits which gave me room to work inside the model to make things work AKA rounding corners that computers can't really do. And the model is not made with the equipment used as a reference to make it easier for us. Great video bud.

Thanks Shane! Just like having GPS will make a good dozer hand faster, having good dozer skills will make a GPS operator that much quicker. The two go hand in hand as you imply here. Thanks for the comment brother!
@downfour473043 жыл бұрын
I learned this the hard way. Literally ran gps on a dozer last week for the first time with zero knowledge on how it works. Lol. I couldn’t understand why all of a sudden it would just dive on me. But I got through it. To make things worse it was kind of a goofy shape pond. The engineer was goin doe style points I think. But regardless gps made things quicker for me still. It’s definitely an outstanding tool to help you, but like you mentioned you have to have a good understanding on what you’re doing in the first place.

Great video! I totally agree with needing dirt sense and blending skills. GPS is a great tool when all the stars align with the satellites and they are actually working properly. On large jobs being able to figure out where the next file is and whether it’s actually accurate can be quite a task some times. Finishing road top with machines that are not dialled in can leave you scratching your head in a grader at 3am with your front wheels 5 feet in the air.It happens when the gps thinks it should be cutting something that’s too hard to cut. Similarly when the differences in grade between machines leaves you with small fills and only fines to fill them with,they constantly look like cottage cheese when you pack and blade over them no mater what you do. GPS is a great tool for saving a ton of stakes but in my opinion is a whole new skill set having to be a great operator to start with. You need the ability to know when to watch the screen and to know if it’s working or lieing to you while creating that design masterpiece.

Great summary Dimsum! Another factor that plays into your grade is blade wear. I didn't get a chance to make a video talking about that aspect of using GPS but that can play a huge role in your accuracy over the course of even a month or so. When you really start paying attention to your cutting edge you'll be shocked at how fast it wears down when you are shooting for an accuracy of half an inch. Thanks for the comment!

Only 1 thing makes any of us operators GOOD operators………………. EXPERIENCE 💪 gotta have a good eye, GPS has its place tho I will say that👍👍 it allows you to have the grade elevations at your finger tips instead of having to get off and look at the print. It is really nice for parking lot contour drainage, and definitely for holding ponds👍 good explanation video boys👍

I want to modify what you said just a bit. The one thing that makes good operators is a willingness to learn...constantly. The ability to continue to learn and educate yourself separates operators from stick pullers. Experience simply sharpens our skills over time. Thanks for the comment Burt! I appreciate the support!
