I think this opinion is really exaggerated. Even if he is letting them know the score, that doesn't mean the players will just stop playing. The players knew anyways because everyone in the crowd was shouting it to them on the field. We also don't know that the score of the other game is what his hand gestures meant. It's also a common hand gesture for one on one man marking.

Long term, if the US, Mexico, and Canada want to get better then they should push to have concacaf and conmebol merge. The clubs and national teams would benefit from playing better competition. Obviously the biggest hurdle is travel but concacaf is a black hole.

The 1-1 fingers by GB is a physical manifestation of GB's weak mentality. in the press conference after the US was bounced out of the tourney, GB boasted that the US exceeded expected goal differential in the Panama game. To translate, that is GB bragging that the US with 10 men didn't lose to minnow Panama by two goals or more. That is such a loser mentality. And clearly this team has adopted his malaise and inadequacies.

@@therealking6202I heard soccer is more expensive and not as accessible to join or get to the few facilities. Parents with a lower income cannot afford to pay or send their children to these places. So usually it is rich parents who can afford it. You miss out on a great deal of talents who want to play soccer but will never or can't progress beyond playing for a small boys' club. Perhaps missing out on several 100,000 talented children who will never be able to get the chance. Basketball, American football, ice hockey and baseball are the four major sports in the USA that dominate and are biggest investment. In these sports, there is more interest in finding, scouting and picking talent from poorer areas, because that is where, for the most part, the best talents come from and becomes the best players. Usually clubs pay for these youths and sometimes sign a contract. In the soccer world, that investment or ambition does not exist.

Our keeper stable is the worst it's been in generations. The one thing we could hang our hat on as a USMNT team was elite level keepers, and they were one of the key reasons that the US was always a tricky opponent for decades. Matt Turner is probably a really nice guy. He was also benched by a relegation-level club for making the same kind of mistakes he's making on the national team. We can't play out of the back consistently with a keeper that can't use his feet. And our backup keeper was a benchwarmer for the benchwarmer in the same relegation-level club for half the year. Who is currently the best American keeper that is actually starting for his club team day after day? I want that guy.

You need to monopolize youth soccer. There are way too many playstyles in the NT they never mesh well, it looks like a pickup game every time. No cohesion. Watch the Euros, most teams have some sort of identity based on the style played in the country. What is the style in the US? It varies wildly from state to state. Until you develop a unique American playstyle and the MLS stops being a retirement spot for washed players, you will never have a good NT.

I'd rather get an experienced international coach than a club coach who might be looking for a slower paced job. Firstly, if someone is in the mindset that they are taking a job as a slowdown from what they are used to, I don't think you are getting them at 100% committed. Secondly, the international game is so different than long league seasons, in terms of how you motivate and strategize. We shouldn't try to fit a square peg in a round hole, even if the square peg is a really good one. Hire someone with proven success in tournament play. Renaud would be my top candidate. I'd be speaking with his agent right now, while letting him personally focus on the Olympics with France's women's team. Ideally we then heat up the recruitment to close the summer and into the fall. But there are plenty of others too. Just look at how many teams in the Euros, from unheralded countries, have caused real problems for world powers. Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey, Switzerland, etc. Or even look into our part of the world. Last week wasn't the first time Thomas Christiansen's well drilled Panama team bested Berhalter's tactics and far superior squad.

Pulisic pops up and scores big goals because in normal circumstances, having a lay-off target 9 gives you nothing but low-scoring losses and draws. Staying within that system in open play just means he'll be defended by the sideline and left to make Hail Mary crosses. He needs to be dead center with no job description other than dribbling central defenders and shooting past keepers. That's the only place he ever scores from; against run of play and head down. That break he almost had before the bad call to return to the spot of foul was a perfect example. That's not Gregg's "system". That's just what Puli is good for. You won't see him get neat shots or assists after a worked buildup with probes and switches. If he could play anything other than Hero Ball up top, we'd have seen it by now.

You guys hit the nail on the head in terms of the mentality. Besides GGG's utter lack of tactical answers, he's allowed the team and USSF to be lulled into a false sense that some meaningful culture-building has occurred under his watch. It's absolute bullshit. Culture in professional sports isn't about how much teammates and/or coaches like each other, or how secure they all feel in their respective roles. That's what beer leagues are for. The only culture that matters in professional sports is a winning culture, and that typically only comes if you have hardened personalities who refuse to settle for mediocre. On this point, and to also connect the dots with your comments about Weston's poor play. After our loss to Panama he was photographed at a local hookah lounge around midnight. We literally just suffered a terrible defeat, in part because of poor mentality by one of his teammates, and that's what he decided to do afterwards. A guy who is clearly not near top physical fitness, in a smoke-filled lounge. A guy who's been left off the squad before due to off-field decisions. But, he doesn't respect the coach and/or he knows real accountability for such actions isn't going to be applied. One other thing that really stands out to me in this same vein are the press conferences or even pre-recorded montages where certain players (usually Pulisic and Adams) talk about the pride of representing the country. It all comes off as super scripted to me. Like these guys have been drilled since their days with the youth teams about how much of an honor it is, but that they don't actually feel it to the degree that their well polished talking points suggest. They don't actually know what it would be like to not have that opportunity, because it's always been afforded to them (injuries aside). It's a culture of entitlement and dressed up with one-liners about "the crest". And I really like both of those players. I'm not even trying to blame them. It's what they've been taught, by a plastic federation.

They can absolutely pay to keep them. It has to do with stepping up to the challenge of European leagues in order to take the next step in development, lets face it, MLS is amateur league compared to them and would completely stunt their development. As for why that is, theres many reasons. No relegation to demand clubs to stay competitive, no youth development academies to develop players, cap restrictions on clubs, lack of quality continental competitions like Champions League. I heard soccer is more expensive and not as accessible to join or get to the few facilities.

On the bright side, I was able to find some good soccer channels like this one. Gregg represents a losing mentality and his entire coaching career shows it. 6 yrs of mediocrity, many losses, minimal amount of goals and zero signature wins. Shame on the USSF for bringing him back after the World Cup debacle and still not firing Gregg after this disastrous Copa America 2024. Its time for Gregg to go and if not, its time to replace members of USSF. Im tired of this sh1tfest.

Weah is a bigger reason for not advancing. It's probably for the best to get a new manager for a change but putting the blame on GB is crazy. Weah puts his team down a man for 70+ minutes against Panama. Still, Balogun gets a goal but there's so much energy wasted on marking an extra man. Refs rule an obviously offside goal for Uruguay as being on along with other crazy decisions that game. Nothing we can do there. I would have liked to see Zimmerman alongside Ream but it's understandable to not want to select a guy coming back from injury.

Derphalter WILL NOT BE FIRED. I don't see how it is that people don't understand this. He's a pliant stooge and they need him in place to make sure MLS is well represented on the final WC roster for '26. I think there's a good chance he'll be there for the next cycle as well. He's their boy and he'll jump when ordered.

At this point, I would prefer bunker ball + counter attacking. The player pool has shown they are out of depth handling a more controlling, progressive, attacking style of soccer. Until a good core of them can prove that at the highest levels of football, we just have to accept the fact that we can only play bunker ball soccer.

Thing is it's a young team that needs some experience, character is built by experience, you've got a young, talented squad, but you need some experienced high charachter guys around the camp(whether it be coaches or players), Berhalter doesn't have that level of character, really you don't even need a big name, expensive coach (besides Jurgen Klopp would probably only coach Germany if he took a national job) personally id go for Joachim Low (providing he still wants to be a manager) experienced hand, good with younger players, he brought that a sensational German generation through, even a Mauricio Pochettino (forget about what happened at Chelsea, that club's a been a total mess in recent times) a guy that's good at developing young guys

Gregg Berhalter should never have been hired in the first place. Some people want to credit him for bringing the team together, but look at the results! Two players got red cards for hitting other players. When has this ever happened before? Why does he play Renya so far back, and why can't he change a game with tactics for substitutions? Matt Betty Crocker should also be on the hot seat because if he doesn't get this new hire right, he has to go, too. Crocker had to admit that he was wrong for bringing Berthalter back, unlike Berhalter, who constantly blamed the players. USSF needs to make better decisions and break up this nepotism even more.

Little fact about soccer: It is my opinion that soccer comes from the full name of the sport, which is "association football". Specifically, from the "association" part. Also: I'm still baffled how US Soccer could rehire Berhalter. I mean, he at least isn't worse than Jürgen Klinsmann, but after all the shitshow with Claudio Reyna and his son, I thought he's be blackballed from US football.

This team has good surface level talent - Berhalter is our biggest issue and even though Brandon Vazquez did not pop off in Liga MX , he has hold up ability, passing, size and decision making our team could use.

PAY-FOR-PLAY for a sport that never rewards college scholarships! THAT IS THE BIGGEST ISSUE. I have kids who played club soccer and AAU basketball. Soccer was extremely expensive and the ones that can afford stayed until highschool. In basketball, travel teams get players even from playgrounds, middle schools. Recruiting the very best COZ THE SPORT IS CHEAP!!! And it rewards them better for college easily. Now you see the difference and why we will continue to SUCK.

I’m not the greatest soccer mind but I really do hate that Greg keeps throwing Tyler Adams at the 10. Especially in a system where we try to build out of the back and relying on the distribution of our midfielders. Tyler Adams is more of a CDM to me. Gio Reyna would be far better at the 10/CAM

"It's all Gregg's fault." Player analysis: the midfield was awful the entire tournament. Jedi wasnt great. Should Scally be replaced? Weah 0-10, if we don't get a red card we go thru. Realistically, this young team makes huge mistakes over and over again. Richard's was crap. Pulisic wasn't great. Weston struggled at times, Musah disappeared, Pepi missed too many chances, and Weah and CCV cost Gregg his job.

The fact that people are so mad the US didn’t advance just shows the level of incompetence from the US fans. You all act like by virtue of being “Merican” and just showing up that you demand to be respected as equal to the top teams in the world. Only suffering from delusions of grandeur could one argue that we are among the favorites to win… despite never once producing a side that has actually been truly competitive. When walking down the team, there are two players who actually play a lot AND play decent for their side. Robinson and Pulisic. And to be fair, neither are world class but you get productivity out of them. None of the other guys start regularly. Reyna never played at Dortmund and was essentially garaged saled to a team most likely going down next year and he doesn’t play for them either. Turner lost his spot because he is as reliable as Biden is to make sense. McKennie was the fortunate recipient of two lucky incidences where Juve got hit with an FFP violation and a points deduction last year and Pogba got hit with a 4 year ban, essentially meaning they could not really change up their side or buy new players, even in the winter transfer. Don’t believe me, McKennie did not travel with Juve to the US for their summer tour when Pogba was active. They said they didn’t need him. Now, Motta told him he has no future at Juve. Not sure who wants another American Squad player. And these examples go on and on. Our best players are productive yet mediocre. If Pulisic got injured, Chukweze comes in and probably helps balance Milan to take some of the attacking load of Leao. In short, Milan’s level doesn’t go down. There isn’t a single player on our team that is truly relied on by their club teams. You cannot have a successful national team if you have a team of less than mediocre cogs unless you have an absolutely world class coach… which Berhlater is not haha! The players, the coach, and the federation are all ignorant and incompetent and I hope you all keep these same excuses for failure because you will need them in two years.

The US have surpassed Mexico in what exactly? Last time I checked, Mexico are still the current champions in North and Central America and are still the record champions. Please don't give me the FIFA world rankings now, they say exactly nothing. The US are ranked higher than Uruguay, Germany, Switzerland, Colombia, Denmark, Austria, Poland, Panama or the African champions Ivory Coast. These are all teams that would, or have, kicked the USA's ass. And also in terms of its reputation in the soccer world, Mexico has historically and will continue to have a higher standing than the USA in the coming years.

Yeah, the “perfection” pitch isn’t going to cut it. This team is already down & if you’re demanding “perfection” from a group that’s already NOT met their potential (thus far) and they know/hear/see that, you will lose them. They will point fingers. They will resent each other. As a coach, I don’t “preach” anything to my players. You motivate them to understand they are capable of more and to shoot for excellence in discipline, patriotism (for this nat’l team) & grit. Use the pillars of what this nation is (blue collar) and match a playing style that goes with those pillars. ONLY THEN can we expect this team to play well. But if we sit here and bitch/moan about perfection about this “golden generation”, we will be let down again.
