Why Guilty Gear Failed As A Weiss Schwarz Set

Weiss Schwarz released a set for Guilty Gear Strive. This set has a booster box, trial deck, and supply set. The only sign card in this set is in the booster box. The SEC card has the signature of Daisuke Ishiwatari the developer of Guilty Gear. The SP cards have no signatures on them. The Over Frame Rare cards look better than the SP cards. These were illustrated by hungry_clicker.
SP cards feature - Nagoriyuki, May, Goldlewis, Chipp, Leo, Millia, Giovanna, Potemkin, Zato-One, Ramlethal, I-No, Baiken, Anji, Jack-O Valentine, Axl, Faust, Happy Chaos, Testament, and Ky.
Today I talk about the failures to produce sales on TCGPLAYER. Bushiroad President Kidani did not discuss the survey results in detail during the Bushiroad Winter Conference. I will talk about problems I see with the Guilty Gear release. The problems are the lack of special looking art in the Special Rarity cards, OFRs looking better than SPs, the case rate, shipping delays, and advertising.

I didn't know this was a thing even though I know of Weiss and Guilty Gear. I think the bigger issue is a lack of advertising, how was anyone supposed to buy these if no one knew they existed.

they did a push with content creators but that was spread wide enough to more creators and we find ourselves here. it should've happened earlier too but it is what it is. hopefully they change going forward. i also didnt see ads for this set. i would see them on some websites but this time around i didnt see any ads. maybe they though GG would just carry this by the IP name.

@@BigBAnimeTCG It's bizzare how Bushiroad sent CFV Overdress product to Fighting Game Content Creators, but didn't do the same with the set based on a contemporary fighting game.

I preordered this set because they kept advertising hungryclicker was going to be making exclusive art for the set. Hungryclicker is one of my favorite artists and when I saw how few cards had his artwork I was pretty upset but it was too late to cancel the order. Super bummed with how they handled the SPs and the pull rates in general. Luckily my case had the SEC so I wasn't destroyed.

oo congrats on the SEC! that is a fantastic looking card. i always hope when we hear about exclusive art that it would be the SEC/SSP and SPs. im no artist and i know it takes time but it is supposed to be the best rarities. really disappointing what happened hear. glad u didnt get destroyed.

I agree, as a concept the double sp box is nice but like you said, it does nothing to reduce the number of dead boxes. Which I don't even know if they think is a problem worth addressing. I was also bummed to see the no signatures as well, but what amazes me the most is that they didn't even include a stamp. I know we all dislike stamps but they at least differentiate the cards from other foils like SR's and RRR's. Its the same issue I had with the ATR's from the Avatar set. A special rarity with nothing to differetiate it from regular SR's is sad to see.

How would you fix the dead boxes problem, if you have any solutions in mind?

I mentioned it on another video and you may already know this but on their website there should have been a stamp. "SP (Special Rare) cards with unique hot stamp in gold!" I don't know if they scrapped the stamp or the border in gold is the "hot stamp" but i think it got scrapped. these cards were just srs to me and like u said was just really sad.

I wonder if there would be that much crossover between the FGC and CCG worlds, anyway. One is dedicated to split-second timing, reactions, and flawless execution of inputs. The other is all about planning and strategy. Even if BR advertised in front of all Maximilian (not sure on spelling here) Dood's videos, the large reaction probably would have been something closer to "I dont even know how to play that". Also forgot to mention: Jan 6 stream is going to be one of the 5 hour long ones, so probably don't plan to livestream it.

i thought the same about fgc and ccg but given we have seen adventure time, batman ninja, etc and how they reacted after the boom, this set could have done well. i think u just have to get 5% - 10% of the base to have an outstanding sales number. i think it is love of character over actual game play. reading the comments advertising seems to be a major missing then the art and signs. not doing another 5 hr one of confusion and tiredness. ty for the heads up!

There is a big crossover between the FGC and TCG communities. A lot of FGC events have TCG events at them. CEO has an entire second floor devoted to TCG space. This conversation crops up a lot in relation to UFS/UVS as well. The FGC side knows about the TCG side, but the TCG side doesn't seem to know about the FGC side lol The Venn Diagram is damn near a circle.

I can totally see that being the case. FGCs aren't for everyone. throwing controllers do more damage than cards.

i think boxes or cases should have no seeding or reasoning. complete RNG would get rid of any dead boxes or packs and make ripping more exciting

thatd be nice but it doesnt seem like they have any interest in doing that any time soon. all we can do is know it is a possibility before buying and getting it from someone u trust. for the more well to do people, they just buy cases.

I ran preorders on my site while GG preorder window was open and didn’t get a single order for 1 box and therefore I decided not to order a case and stock it. It seemed like everyone thought it was going to be very popular but little people knew or even wanted it. Glad I didn’t order it in, likely would have been sat there for a year!

i think a lot went to advertising. as i type back to these comments also the fact of the card market going down. easy to get people to play a fighting game with minimal cost vs buying into a card game.

What i honestly think happened was that they accidentally used the new ratios for boxes. They are going back go 20 boxes a case and in theory that will be 4 RRs for every box giving you 2 full playsets. This could also explain the double SP boxes.

the first part makes sense. the double sp im not so sure of. they have played with so many ratios lately like uma to then dengeki, that they had to specifically place the double sp in there. i really feel like they are trying to combat the dead box / dead packs. they actually do try to appease the english side like with silver signatures where jp isnt different.

Yes, they need to stop stating the exact number of sps per case or at least state that there is a possibility of 4-9sps per case with only 1 sp per box. There will always be dead boxes but that is just the way it is. The thing is the amount of dbs would definitely be lower and unless the opener of boxes decides to sell remaining boxes after only getting 2-3 sps then at least there is a better chance at live boxes. All depends on how many boxes the opener will crack and just how lucky one can be.

yep there will always be dead boxes. the nice part is the chance all are alive which the 4-9 would do. they cant be bothered right now to do it. maybe they just dont know how to do it. weird to say that but after thinking about it maybe some math on ev and potential for profits on their side says dont do it.

When they first announced guilty gear I was very shocked. I didn’t think it would do good and I was very right. We all were right 😳

At this point I'm hoping Bushi learned a lesson here with this dumpster fire. I pretty much forgot this thing was coming out. The best bet for this set is for the players to find something in it so they absorb any of it floating around.

What a wasted opportunity... Great game, check. Great anime art, check. IP has a cult following, check. Now where's the signatures!? (Other than Sol) This reinforces my hot take: If Bushiroad can't get the signatures for a set, they shouldn't do the set, period.

Yeah the English original SP are lack luster from avatar to now guilty gear. Deadly sins (mid art style) and RWBY (rainbow signature) dodged a bullet I guess before the lazy decision.

sometimes that works and sometimes not. if you go out further than a week u can see others with high view counts. also switching video topics, u will lose viewers like Rudy when he does Weiss. i think GG is popular enough and the advertising was lacking.

Weiss slowly losing market share, with all these other tcg using similar or even the same titles, no one really plays so what makes weiss #1, seems like what seperated them from the others is slowly dwindling.

i started to play and theres a growing scene in my area with new players moving on from collecting and trying out the game. the good thing about the set is that its actually playable too along with a popular IP

they are definitely taking for granted their competitive advantage. no one can match them yet but definitely are being slowly chipped away. we shall see with union arena coming oct 2024.

I love Guilty Gear and this set is such a big disappointment, the OFRs should have been the SPs. Maybe next time will be better 🙃

totally should have been sps. 4 sps and 19 ofrs makes more sense. realistically they should had him do may 9 sps and then have 15 ofrs.

Thank god I was able to cancel my master case preorder, these did not do well on streams at all. They couldn’t even put some kind of character signature stamp like with Bocchi, nobody cares about foil box borders 😂. This is just like King of Fighters, that set was a flash in the pan release weekend, and then interest completely died out after. I agree, Bushi could have done so much more with this set. The SPs look like trash, OFR art is decent. And yea the advertising and hype build up was nonexistent

nice timing! i know foil box triggers are a thing but it looks really stupid when it is empty. i know why they have it empty but i will always think that. ahh so that is what happened with kof. i know people were excited. prices were up but just didnt hear anything else after a little while. bushi got to do some work and stop thinking collectors will be anything.

I'm not going to lie I've never played a Guilty Gear game. However Bridget is great and shes a trans icon online. I'm trans and believe representation matters. I was really excited to get at least 1 but probably more than 1 Bridget SP or higher rarity. For some reason she's not in the set period which seems like a crazy choice to me. We can only help she's in a sequel if one happens.

They only did the season 1 dlc characters. I'd imagine if they included the other dlc (like brisket) characters it would come in the form of a supplementary set. But I do agree Bridget was one I was hella hoping for

Unfortunately Bridget was a new DLC character so she wasn't able to make it to the set. Hopefully they do a set 2 and feature Bridget and the other new DLC characters.

what everyone else said. if the GGS set did well they could always do a premium booster or second set that includes more characters. Seven Deadly Sins got another set so always a possibility.
