Josh was originally not a guitar player, he was a drummer. He learned almost every previous rhcp repertoire to fit in and play live. I don't think Frusciante would do the same with Josh's two records. Josh committed to his job in rhcp consistly for 10 straight years. The amount of respect I have for Josh grew so much over time.

I feel so bad for Josh for all the shit he gets just for not being Fruscainte. People forget that John is the one who left the band. The Chili's didn't kick him out or anything, they just needed a replacement guitarist, and Josh did an incredible job for 10 years. Songs like Feasting on the Flowers, Sick Love, Dark Necessities (Obviously), and especially Goodbye Angels. I genuinely think Goodbye Angels is one of their best songs ever.

@@hanburgundy4317 We're all glad John Frusciante came back, it was so incredible. He looked to me even more reclusive and retired from rock than Zack de la Rocha was between Rage's forced hiatuses. Even if I dig many Josh's songs and I'm a longtime One Hot Minute supporter against Frusciante's hardcore fans, I'm so happy Froosh came back. I'm not a fan of The Getaway production, especially for the drum sound. I applaud Josh's dedication, his willingness to play any song from any era, but his style was always too bizarre, effects-oriented, to me. It's all a matter of taste, anyway.

My favorite songs from the Klinghoffer era are the ones most people never heard because they were on the b-sides of I'm with You. They got released piecemeal after the album and way later as a compilation called I'm Beside You. I remember reading somewhere that those songs only got released at all because Josh pushed for it. Personally I think the b-sides should have been the album and most of the album should have been the b-sides.

I need to preface my reply with two things. First, I was at the Toronto PJ show too. Second, I am not a Klinghoffer hater. Okay, with that out of the way: I thought Josh's set at that show sucked. The sound was awful for one thing, but the playing and singing was just super inconsistent and boring. I wasn't really familiar with Pluralone prior to the show, so I watched some videos both before and after the concert, and confirmed that what I had witnessed was pretty consistent with his other performances. I like what he did in the Chilis, and on John's solo albums, but man... Pluralone just doesn't do it for me.

I always felt the hate towards Josh was unwarranted. I'll admit, when he joined the RHCP, I was fairly upset due to the fact that he basically replaced John Frusciante. After sometime, I grew to appreciate his talents. He was probably the next best thing to John. He really kept the peppers alive, even helping Kiedis w/ lyrics when he forgot the lyrics. The dude was dedicated to the band, probably more so than Frusciante ever was. The way he was abruptly kicked out of the band was unprofessional, to say the least.

I’ve heard josh say he specifically tried to play things that weren’t in the ‘frusciante realm’ which I can’t imagine how hard that must’ve been. Knowing now how stifled he felt, the fact he still dug deep and found such uniquely beautiful and interesting melodies demonstrates the depth of his soul. Which, again, I can’t imagine ALSO being able to do that while constantly being compared and reminded that he was not his predecessor. He has built a tremendous pedigree and the company he keeps value him like beloved family member. Dot Hacker, Pearl Jam, Gnarls Barkley, Pluralone, Bob Forrest-such tremendous collaborations.

Bob Forrest is the secret Frank Zappa of that generation. If you jammed with him, you went somewhere. Josh is so talented and honestly the Peppers did not deserve him because he didn't have their full hearts, he was an after thought in retrospect but it was the same ideal that happened with Dave Navarro. John should lose his ego and play some of the greater songs from the times he wasnt in. (and i am a lifelong huge fan of the chili peppers but honestly Josh deserved better)

I had the honor of getting to see him play alongside Jane's Addiction, and Smashing Pumpkins when they toured together recently. He was in the area, and heard they were gonna be playing a concert, and he asked if he could come be the guitarist. They agreed, and I gotta say. Hearing Jane's Addiction, and Smashing Pumpkins songs played in the style of his guitar was out of this world. It was a borderline psychedelic experience. It was in a closed arena too, so the sound was like right in your ear. It was one of the best live performances I've ever listened to.

A few years ago, when i first discovered the Chili Peppers, Josh was on and they had just released The Getaway. I was FLOORED. It had all the sounds i love the most from the history of the band and it just had that gorgeous, classic RHCP aesthetic. Josh Klinghoffer not only inspired me to broaden my horizon and write music but he also inspired this profile's name.

Longer vids are great, you keep killing it with this channel. Dark Necessities has been a nonstop track for me since finding out about it for the first time recently. Your breakdown makes it feel like more than just a guilty pleasure 😊 and on top of the breakdown/storytelling also appreciate you chipping away at the negativity around appreciating guitar players, elitism in this space is rampant and desperately needs an alternative like this. Nothing wrong with enjoying different things without tearing someone/something else down!

I've never understood the hate that Josh gets just because he replaced John, always seemed kinda petty. Also, I'm still at the beginning of my music theory journey, but I love videos like this. You have a pretty great way of explaining things, so even someone like me who knows the make-up of a chord but doesn't quite know how to apply that in the wider sense of music can understand. Also just wanted to say I've enjoyed both your longer form videos as well as your shorter skit styles videos! keep 'em coming!

The solo melody over the chorus of Raindance Maggie is one of the best examples of 'playing with feel'. That same style is also heard on the sick love solo, the chord arrangements for both songs give it a both dreary and optimistic vibe at once

Everybody respects and appreciates Josh for keeping the band alive. But the problem is his guitar work was never connected to Flea´s bass work as well as Johns. They sounded like two separate things. Never got to see Josh with the Chili Peppers, but I did get the opportunity to see him with Jane's Addiction. And let me tell you this, he is one of the greatest guitar players I've ever seen live, and I've seen a lot of the greats. He not only took Dave Navarro's riffs and played him note-for-note but he was also able to improvise and throw a little bit of himself in there and it was a little chunk of guitar Heaven I'll tell you. Didn't know much about Josh's work before that, but based on that single performance he will go down as one of the best guitarists I've ever seen live and in my opinion one of the best guitar players alive
