Very well put. Edit: The only thing I would add is that C is the most balance language between size of your toolset, and efficiency of code. You can make a smaller toolset than C, but it will not be much better than C itself. You can maybe create a language that is a bit more efficient than C, but not without some increase in code needed. Assembly, of course, can be faster than C, which is why I think it should be used for optimizing algorithms that you have already written in C or as inline code. Assembly produces 3x more code than C. Therefore, write in C, optimize in assembly.

I was kinda thinking in terms of arbitrary function or operator overloading, but now that I think about it, most languages have duck typing, typeof, some overloaded operators etc. Haskell wiki calls typeclasses ad hoc as well, but personally they feel very different to me. Like, would you call inheritance ad hoc? Maybe technically sure, you can use it like that if you really want to, but Idk. Maybe it should be called something like structured polymorphism, since it's explicitly designed to push you to use different more structured style. Idk. Fine point taken, I was thinking too narrow.

@jeffwells641
@jeffwells641 6 ай бұрын
@@lozyodella4178 It depends on what you mean by "simple". C is one of the simplest modern languages. Building anything substantial with it, however, is extremely difficult, because C's definition of a "convenience" is things like for loops, if statements, and pointers. That's kind of what makes it simple. Another way of putting it: C the language is very simple (a tiny fraction of the size and feature set of C++). C programs, however, are extremely complicated. IMO it's good to learn the basics of C just to get an understanding of what all the other languages are doing "under the hood", so to speak: C is essentially the minimum high level language necessary to do anything that a program is capable of doing. Most modern languages were prototyped in C before they developed their own robust compilers and interpreters (depending on the style). Learning how to write programs in C will teach you how to do all the things a modern language does automatically, and so can help you troubleshoot unexpected behaviors when e.g. the garbage collector in Python does something you don't expect. That said I wouldn't want to or try to program a major project in C unless you're aiming to do some really low-level systems work, like contributing to the Linux kernel or something like that. Even regular systems programming I think you should use Go instead of C. But learning how C works is definitely good knowledge to have.
@majorhumbert676
@majorhumbert676 6 ай бұрын
When you've learned enough languages, you won't have to worry about having learned the wrong language. Various programming languages are used for different niches. What kind of programming are you interested in? Python tends to be used by numeric computation. C tends to be used for embedded systems. C++ for desktop games. JavaScript and TypeScript for web applications. Lots of different languages are used for web server applications. I'd recommend learning a bit of C. It's a simple language, so it won't take long to learn the language itself, but you'll learn a lot about how computers work on a fundamental level. I'd also recommend learning a bit of pure functional programming, because that will teach you how to structure your code, and to write scalable and maintainable applications (even if you end up writing code in a non-pure functional language). You can learn Haskell, Elm, PureScript, for example. But the main focus should be on learning the tools that you need to write the applications that you want to create.

Haskell is great for writing academic papers about your new haskell library. Or the new feature you implemented in the haskell compiler. It's also great for seeing what other languages will be adopting in twenty years.

Haskell truly is the dopest and efficient language. However C++ is just the perfect balance. Haskell is the king of procrastination. It will only ever something when it has too. It won't update shyt until the variable or something is checked.
