"New thing bad, old thing good" Heart was pop music back in the day, and so was Zeppelin, and so were the Stones. The reason we still listen to it is because it stood the test of time. You don't hear the hundreds of songs which were popular at the same time decades ago but didn't stand the test of time. The same will happen with today's music. The good stuff will stick around, the bad stuff will fade. Just because you don't find the majority of it to your liking doesn't mean it's objectively worse or anything

@@riffler24 The thing that separates the music is the talent and ORIGINALITY. You knew the band when you heard them, even if it was completely different from what they mainly did. Today it’s manufactured and a production. The mainstream music sound all the same. Auto tune, computer generated background noise. What a joke. Even country music is mainly trying to be from the 70’s, country doesn’t know what they are, rap?

Absolutely. One of the most impressive female lead singers. And with a unique sound. I hate it that many just refer to their later 'commercial-revival' work. Also hate it that she is hardly ever listed in 'lists of great female lead rock/metal singers'. Often forgotten, set aside for contemporary screamy divas of bombastic rougher or symphonic metal bands. Imo only Anneke and Floor have reached comparable level qualities, each in their own unique way.

The song Barracuda was basically a huge middle finger to a male-dominated recording industry. The ladies, Ann & Nancy Wilson, had been the subject of some nasty rumors and nasty treatment from record company executives and this song was essentially a giant F.U. They're a great band. Nancy was, and is, a ridiculously underrated guitar player.

Actually it was in response to an article written by a reporter that painted both the sisters in an incestuous relationship . Trying to point out that women can't lead a rock band unless there is something else going on between them that makes them different than other women . Now normally this isn't nor should it be a problem of any kind for women to be together but the article was aimed at an incest trait between the sisters as a way to insult and destroy them .

@@TheFatboonedaddy In addition to that, it was also a musical middle finger to Mushroom Records, their first publisher. Mushroom started off with an ad that showed Ann and Nancy standing close together, wearing off-the-shoulder blouses (so in the pic it looked like they were naked), with the caption, "And this was our first time!" (sparking the rumors that would later fuel the article). Later, the studio decided Heart wasn't making their second album fast enough, so they took what little material the band had produced by their arbitrary deadline, combined that with a couple of songs performed by studio musicians, and released that as "Magazine", at about the same time Heart (who had in the interim signed with CBS subsidiary Portrait Records) released their proper second album, "Little Queen" (the album that contained this song). Later, Portrait sued Mushroom, forcing them to recall the album. It was later re-recorded and released by Heart themselves, under the Portrait label.

Heart were big hits way before Iron Maiden was. They're in the Rock 'n Roll HOF with hit singles including "Crazy on You," "Magic Man," "Straight On," "Barracuda," "What About Love," "These Dreams," "Little Queen," "Kick It Out," "Heartless," "Even It Up," "Love Alive," "Dog and Butterfly," and "Dreamboat Annie." Their peak was 1975-1995 with the albums "Dreamboat Annie," and "Little Queen" being their two best in 1975 and 1978 respectively. Most of their biggest hits came from those two albums which went multiple platinum, although as mentioned they continued charting singles and LPs up until the late 1990s. They were a pioneering female led hard rock band.

Tommy, you picked another favorite of mine. Ann and Nancy have that "blood harmony" thing to the max. Both of them have lovely voices and together they are goddesses. In 1975 Dreamboat Annie came out with songs like "Magic Man" and "Crazy on You" and woke me up to the notion that women could sing real rock. Then in 1977 came Little Queen with "Barracuda". That album featured Nancy singing "Treat Me Well" (Beautiful ballad) and "Cry to Me" (Ann's beautiful ballad). In 2012, Heart performed a tribute to Led Zeppelin at the Kennedy Center and Ann proved that she can still bring the house down by singing a "Stairway to Heaven" cover. Excellent choice, excellent review Tommy.

There is quite a rabbit hole, actually. While driving rock was one of their fortes, ethereal ballads were also part of their regimen. This old classic rocker recommends: "Love Alive". Haunting acoustic intro, Ann's soft voice, orchestra choruses and bridges, Ann;s flute skills, delicate outro. Arguably their best song, among all their other best songs. "Dreamboat Annie" (and the reprise) And most especially, "Cry to Me." If you don't weep, you fail the Turing Test.

I grew up in the 70s with Heart who were huge in Canada. They moved to Vancouver from Seattle as Ann Wilson was dating Mike Fisher (Heart's manager and Roger's brother) who draft dodged his way into Canada. There were few vocalists at that time with Ann's range and clarity. She has inspired generations of female vocalists! Enjoy this rabbit hole as their catalog is deep. Their first 3-4 albums were all killer no filler. Off the beaten track but great reaction songs would be Heartless, Straight On and a personal favorite Sing Child. There is a live version of Sing Child where Steve Fossen has some questionable taste in an upper garment. Dreamboat Annie is a great "Serenity Now" track.

From Seattle, they "made it" in 1975, after playing dive Bars and parties for years. These two sisters, Anne and Nancy Wilson are as talented as they come. They are master guitar players and vocalists. The rest of the Band isn't to shabby either. This Band (Heart) along with Fleetwood Mac's Stevie Nicks, and Christine Macvey owned the 1970s and 80s. Heart was sort of inspired by Led Zeppelin. In fact, they finally met their idols, and became friends with Plant, Page and the others. That's why Anne and Nancy Wilson, along with Jason Bonham (son of the late Zeppelin Drummer) played Stairway to Heaven at their Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. You can find it on KZbin. I agree with all the recommendations below, especially since you were asking for songs you might have heard by them. After checking out those, I would recommend the funky 'Straight On For You' and 'Even It Up." "Heartless" is a great tune as well. For more of Ann's vocal shining, check out the cover of "Tell it Like it Is." Also with all the recommendations for their cover of Zep's Stairway to Heaven at Kennedy Center Honors, I assume you will get to that eventually, j8st thought it is worth mentioning that it also features Jason Bonham (John's son) with the infamous Bonzo top hat in honor of his pop. Zep was Heart biggest influence and the typically closed out their shows with "Rock n' roll" and more recently "Kashmir." Can you imagine Ann Wilson singing the Who's "Love Reign O'er Me?" Well they've been known to do that one as well. The original band was incredible, but much in the vein of Fleetwood Mac there was turmoil and fall out. Roger Fisher's guitar tone and technique was ahead of it's time. I'm sure he was the inspiration for "Magic Man" according to him for more than just his guitar playing. Hours of great music to explore and enjoy from this band.

Lots of people have mentioned it but.. hardly anyone can cover Led Zep well but not only do Heart pull it off, they totally smash it. The fact that you can see Robert Plant brushing away a tear when they played Stairway To Heaven at the Kennedy Centre honours concert speaks volumes. Have a listen to their song “What About Love” it’s vocal a tour de force.

That song was from 1977 and they have so many hits but the must resent that I no is they did a Tribute to Led Zeppelin for the Rock and Roll Hall Of fame "Stairway To Heaven" that was unbelievable and a must-see!

As someone who studied voice in my younger years, I know just how much damage rockers can do to their voices if they use improper technique. Ann Wilson is one of the few whose throat I never worry about because she manages to hit, and hit hard, but not in a damaging way. Which is why she's still rocking in her 70s. I know many others have recommended the Kennedy Center Honors Led Zeppelin tribute, and I'll definitely add my recommendation to that, but when you watch it, take a moment to appreciate the fact that she's 62 during that performance. Also, try Magic Man by Heart at some point. That one is my absolutely fave. You may have heard more of their 80s stuff, which was more commercially successful but not nearly as musically strong. "Alone", "Never", "If Looks Could Kill" "Who Will You Run To" are some examples. Their 70s stuff is where the real gold is, though. "Magic Man", "Crazy on You", "Straight On", and for the softer sound, either "Dreamboat Annie" or (my preference) "Dog & Butterfly."

If you want to check out some modern female-fronted bands, I’d _highly_ recommend these seven: *Blood Ceremony* (flute-tinged witch rock), *The Bridge City Sinners* (punk folk), *Jess and the Ancient Ones* (psychedelic rock), *Lucifer* (doom rock), *The Oath* (classic metal), *Thundermother* (classic hard rock, and actually an all-female band), and *Twin Temple* (doo-wop). They all released their debut albums within the last thirteen years, and they’re actually my favorite bands of all time.

There's a big power ballad from the late '80's you've likely heard somewhere or the other: "Alone". It's covered fairly often these days on singing competitions and such.. Not my favorite by them, but it got a lot more radio play back in the day compared to their earlier stuff.

The 60s and 70s are a box filled with treasures but so many song have been made since then. In my country the Netherlands we had a top 100 of all time in 79 and now we have a top 2000 that says it all. Even i discover songs and groups from those days that are great. Some bands or songs are forgotten and sometimes it isn't a loss but there are enough songs that are worth listening.

before a concert in her dressing room was a man that asked her how her love life was. she said my husband is great .and he said not your husband ..your sister... rumors and all that. so she wrote this song in response to the rumors.

Feel so bad for young people who didn't grow up in 70s.....they missed a generation of best songs ever written and recorded. . Arguably, Ann Wilson has the best voice in R&R, ever.

So glad the Wilson sisters made it! Had a crush on Nancy in the mid-80’s - she was hot and could play! Definitely worth listening to a few more. Crazy on You is one of their best. Cheers!

If you were asking about a tune that was by HEART ("a tune by heart" sound like a nice pun :)), I would guess you might have caught their power ballad "Alone" sometime somewhere. People who are real fans name numerous and possibly even better songs, but it was the first that I did hear (I'm an 80s guy, started with music in the 90s). That means, if nothing else, it was getting a lot of airplay.

I have no idea what the lyrics are about but when I was younger, I always thought the song was about a car...a Plymouth barracuda. A pure American muscle car! So, for example, check out a 1971 Barracuda.

This is a fantastic song. Gretchen Wilson with Alice in Chains did a terrific cover of it. For further exploration try "Alone", "Crazy on You", "Magic Man" and their cover of Led Zeplin's "Stairway to Heaven live from the Kennedy Centre Honors".

While one of my favorite videos of theirs, the audio is the studio release to which a concert video has been edited on. It's obvious at points, almost looking like lip-sync. But they never once did so. She did and does, however, sing effortlessly piercing and nuanced. The mic cut at Rockford Speedjam in 1979, and we could still hear her from 80 yards away.
