I really like your questions because they help me understand Taiwan's shortcomings and start to think about how we can improve it as Taiwanese.Thanks to you and Daryl. Taiwan is incredibly fortunate to have both of you.

It's not surprising to talk about education, but this situation isn't limited to Taiwan; perhaps it's prevalent across East Asia. In fact, South Korea's cram school culture might be even more intense than Taiwan's. Asia tends to focus more on educating civil servants, compared to the West. There are both pros and cons to this approach. At least during the pandemic, Asia's performance was actually better. A society that leans towards producing civil servants and one that leans towards producing scientists each has its own advantages and disadvantages.

That's interesting. One thing I have noticed is that living in Taiwan (and teaching young kids) for 18 years has changed the way I talk a lot. It has changed the way I think about communicating. I'm not used to having conversations with native English speaking adults anymore!
I think Taiwan's education has high standards and the school subjects and curricula are important and designed well. The question is, why are the students learning? Are they trying to understand and master a new skill or are they trying to pass an exam? Most students, parents and teachers make exams the priority. Kids learn quickly that knowledge is for tests and not for using in real life. The pressure to get good grades is the driving force, not the curiosity for discovery. Is that the education system's fault or the whole society's fault? If it is the education system's fault, it should be easy to fix. If it is society's fault, it will be much more difficult.
Daryl .. we're in Vancouver and good move to stay and bring them up in Taiwan.. our PM and unelected PM is down the toilet
@daryl_s2 ай бұрын
There are pros and cons, of course. But so far, I believe we have been able to give our kids a healthy, stable, good quality of life. Maybe we could in Canada, too, although we would probably be below the poverty line in Vancouver as a teacher on a single income.

@@daryl_s It was a joy and pleasure watching your conversation with Cole. I am Chinese, born and raised in Hong Kong and came to Canada when I was 19. Spent my adult years in Edmonton and now retired in Victoria BC. Now 71 years old, start missing my roots ... It was a saving grace when I became a vegetarian in late 30s. You have a great attitude and practice in simple and content living. If you can slip in half an hour to one hour a day to do tai chi or yoga, the benefit one reaps is long term. I have great respect for parents today as I cannot imagine the challenges they face in today's economic/financial situation in raising a family. I pray for peace, good-will and stability for humankind, how can we take the 'kind' out of humanity when we are all connected?

We pay money for kids to learn English, but you not need, and that is not cheap……..
@daryl_s2 ай бұрын
I understand your point. You are right, it isn't cheap. It has taken years of our time and effort to make sure our children are bilingual. Maybe it didn't cost us money, but spending the time training them ourselves cost a lot of time and work!
