I think Valve did choose Alyx because... major change of writers. Laidlaw isn't main writer anymore and also they wanted a normal game "to push VR". They tested Portal and L4D(I guess) and only HL just left. HL3 is indeed hyped but maybe to decrease expectations(that anyway is too high for them) they decided to make a HL2 prequel, that no one thought about for serious. Maybe to make HL3 better in future, they literally said "if HLA will be a success, maybe we will make more".

But I bought a VR headset on the announcement of Half Life alyx, and now after playing the game, I finally understand just how world changing the half life series has been. I played the first half life and the opposing force/blue shift expansions, I read the TF2 comics, I played poker night for the TF2 items and then sam and max hit the road, i got the sacrifice and other stories hardcover in grade 6 and kept it in my desk all year, i drew my own TF2 gmod-esque comics in my notebook, i made gmod animations, never really fell in love with L4D beyond a single playthrough mostly because i had nobody to play with, but i did enjoy the atmosphere and characters. got into CSGO as soon as it was free to play, got into gambling crate openings, spent all my christmas money then got scammed, stop playing csgo, saved my money, bought an index when HLA was announced, proceeded to have one of the best experiences of my life, here i am now.

The title "Half-Life 3" is symbolic for something much more than just the next game in the series. The reason HLA is not Half-Life 3 is because Half-Life 3 would bring closure to the decade-old cliffhanger of Half-Life 2: Episode 2, in a playable format. From what I learned with Valve and their games, Half-Life is their flagship IP. Each game at least has shook the gaming industry with it's underlying technology. Half-Life 1 showed us narratives through a first-person perspective, Half-Life 2 showed us physics can be a part of gameplay, Half-Life: Alyx showed us VR is viable for gameplay. Not only that. If we only listened to Gabe Newell earlier before in an interview where he said (paraphrased) "I'm jealous of Nintendo being able to make a game side-by-side with a console" taking a jab at Super Mario Odyssey and the Nintendo Switch, we could've deciphered that this was coming all along as part of his vision.

HL: Alyx is not "showing VR is viable for gameplay", everyone already knows VR is viable. The actual next-step that HL:A is making, the next-gen leap that is coming for VR is the graphical fidelity, the immersion factor. The textures, materials, lighting. The lighting system is really effective, and the detail put into every asset is what is jaw-dropping. The VR 'gameplay' in HL:A is emphatically _not_ what will be considered ground-breaking. Just as with HL2 did for physics in games, HL:A will do the same for graphical fidelity and that level-of-detail 'wow' factor.

I think itll happen soon because of cloud gaming, the only way real hardware can compete is with VR. Who's going to build a 2k gaming rig anymore just to play on a flat monitor when you can rent a similar machine for $5 a month and game on the cloud with less hassle then even consoles. Thats goin to be the budget king which will replace regular flat monitor gaming as the cheap option and VR should turn into the new standard. I dont know about $100 but $300-400 could be comming. Geforce Now just released, so its taking some time before everyone figures out what a pretty good deal it is and consoles and PC hardware manufacturers start to feel the lost money and adjust thier prices or offer more and thats where VR should come in. Im already planning to throw money at a game instead of a hardware upgrade because i can play it on the cloud without having to build a 1k PC to play it. I would spend 1k to make a PC to do VR though. And once they start having VR games on the cloud.. all you need to do is buy a headset, which could actually get to the 100-200 range.

My main counter argument is that people understand what a 'real' Half Life 3 (ie. the one that this isn't) would be. As you mention, it would be built upon the same substrate - engine, gameplay, universe - and as you also say, would only have a different story & protagonist. But the story is the crux of the argument, and your dismissal of it really diverts the argument. Is Marc Laidlaw's post Half Life 3? In some sense, yes absolutely. But is it a game? I must say I don't see your argument at 1:46. Yes - the experience that takes me through Half Life's continuation is _missing_ and Half Life Alyx is not that. I don't think VR even has a place in the argument, on either side (I love VR, to be clear). Would a Half Life game that continues the story that was in VR be Half Life 3? Of course! But for me what it comes down to is this: People have for years referred to 'this' Half Life (ie. the one that is a continuation of the story) as Half Life *3*, which is why in my opinion, Half Life Alyx is not Half Life 3. I do wonder _why_ you're making this argument though. Most of this video is a defense of VR (which I'm in total agreement about), and less about why you've made a somewhat confusing decision to call a game by a name it was not given. Maybe the grief really has gotten the best of you! :D
@cia4u4014 жыл бұрын
not to mention that Laidlaw's post is a plot synopsis at best, if it was actually a finished novel, book or even something akin to the TF2 comics the people that care about the story wouldn't feel dissatisfied as he mentions. Sure, it would be a completely different medium, lacking gameplay, visuals, sound, and everything nice he cited in the video, but that doesn't mean it can't be just as good or enjoyable.
@gronkiusmaximus4 жыл бұрын
This is Half-life 3 because just a basic upgrade on graphics and such wouldn't be very Half-life, Half-life strongest's weapon its innovation, thus VR, what did people care more about, the massive innovation Half-Life brought about, or its story? Yeah
@ricksaburai4 жыл бұрын
@@gronkiusmaximus by this logic, the episodes and Portal 1/2 would be HL3 too. The application of new graphic technologies was astonishing. It'd be like calling God of War 3 "GoW 6" or something due to all the prequels and side stories that came after the second game in various platforms. HLA is a prequel that doesn't pick up where the episodes left off, which is one the most massive cliffhangers in gaming history. If anything it's Half-Life 1.5.

@@ricksaburai The whole point of Half Life was innovation not some story only a few people (Edited cause it sounded like I completely miscredited the story, few people relative to the impact of source, obviously a lot of people still care, measuring the net positive brought on by both aspects) are affected/care about this many years after, that's not the point of GoW At the end of the day the biggest thing that came from half-life was not a cliffhanger but the technology I don't really care about names so I won't force you to call it 3, but to me it is Also Portal's purpose was HL's such as I described so nah Maybe it's just hard to get the logic or desire to call it HL3 if you're not someone who never cared for half life as a game but instead what it brought to gaming, Idk maybe if you watched the video again you'd get it
@ricksaburai4 жыл бұрын
@@gronkiusmaximus I get what the video is saying, I just disagree. This "leap forward" in graphic technology is one of the most obvious characteristics of the series but it isn't its core point. No Half-Life game is a mere tech showcase - they may _flaunt_ Valve's newest weaponry, but it isn't the major focus. Improvements and technology side by side with simple _enjoying_ the game is the company's ideology. As for the benefits it brought to gaming, I know them too well. Like I mentioned in another comment, I am almost 30 years old. I have thoroughly enjoyed not just the games themselves, but also the change they brought on the industry. Everyone, regardless if they call it HLA or HL3, is excited about this next level gaming Valve is known for bringing about. I have come to actually like the idea of having the view from Alyx's perspective - introducing us to her character before she herself is being introduced to Gordon Freeman. Imagine also a sequal to this (HL:Alyx that is), that is the continuation of where HL2:E2 left off, and witnessing the hardcore actions of Gordon Freeman, and we're all now in VR-mode, so things are extra cool. I can't stop but thinking, that all of us playing as Gordon Freeman for HL1-HL:E2 until now, will and can now truly appreciate Gordon Freemans Character, and we would also be like "Damn! That's us! That's Gordon Freeman! What a mad lad! He's unstopppable! A beast!". I don't have VR, neither a computer powerful enough to run it, but I'm just as excited about HL: Alyx with VR, as I would have been with HL3. I can still see a way for Valve to wrap up the story of HL2 and the episodes, with not too distant graphics with VR, in a perfect way. It's all promising, from my side of view.

Lost Coast was another 'yeah' moment IMO, even if just a tech demo. However, for me this is not Half-Life 3, but is an expansion to the HL universe. The only game I will ever call Half-Life 3 will be the one that continues Freeman's storyline, whether that be in 2D, 3D, VR, or in 2050 when we're using Holodecks. So to conclude, for me there's nothing wrong with HL:Alyx and it's an interesting concept, but it's the start of a new franchise within the HL universe and that's that. Interesting video! “Why HL:Alyx is Half Life 3” Project Borealis: Am i a joke to you?
@bravomike47344 жыл бұрын
I'm only 17 years old and I totally understand what you meant by the "Yeah" Half-Life magic. I'm only 17 and one of those young gamers. A few years ago I listened to my cousin brother who's either half or almost a decade older than me talking about Half Life 1. To him there was no other game other than Half Life. Well, when Valve announced Half Life: Alyx it also temporarily made its older Half Life games free. So, I tried Half Life 1 out of curiosity and respect for the game because there aren't alot of games that can mean the life to someone, if it did to my cousin brother it probably did to so many other people and also because I'm looking to go into the gaming designing industry in the future as a computer science student, so I was curious to discover what sort of stuff Half Life 1 or as I knew it, the god father of first person shooters was made of. When playing Half Life 1, as it began like any other game, there I was just looking at the monumentally old graphics and had to console myself with the fact of the game's age and when this game came out, this graphics was probably revolutionary and ground breaking. The movement was difficult, the legacy movement where the characters sprints by default and shift is walking and not the other way around, over time I got used to the movement but the legacy movement leg placement still bit me in the ass at times. However as I played, slowly I got the "yeah" factor, the detail and attention given to the game's level design was simply phenomenal and outstanding for me. Getting slightly hurt due to the game's intentional pathway planning then seeing a medic kit on a wall, rushing in only to find there are two zombies hidden in the corners of the room with the medic pack, that was simply awesome for me. After finishing Half Life 1, where the "yeah" slowly built over time as I slowly got over the graphics, mechanics and system which I considered to be "crude, arcane or legacy". Half Life 2 instantly hit it off from the prologue since it still holds to modern standards. I'm yet to finish Half Life 2 but I know for sure I won't be disappointed.
