Arnie and Stallone movies from the 1980's were the golden age of masculinity. Just watch "Predator" for what was the ideal badass of that time. (heroes looked like action figures come to life. No CG or digital filters back then) Then DieHard came out and it became ok to look average again but men still had to act like a masculine man. The Lethal Weapons movies showed how you could have masculine and funny men with high skill as the protagonist. After this Matrix and the John Wick movies took from this style of hero over the muscle man of the 1980s. (someone who can actually dodge, climb, roll, dive for cover and fight and run without getting tired because they have athleticism too not just brute strength) For a long time the James Bond flicks were the gold standard of masculinity because you had to be cuning and smart and be able to outwit other spy to be a badass. The Bond movies are what all men aspire to be like. You got the gadgets, the cool cars, and style and the babes. Both men and women watch it because its got the things we want to see. Today? beta males are the protagonists and nobody cares who they are because they look like the dude who works at mcdonalds.
