Local government. No wonder America has no history, if it tears it down, ere it gets interesting. Our family preserves three 'historical monuments' built between 1470/1511. They have an aura of their own, people that understand that, will always want to live in it. People have to get the idea of 'owning' something out of their minds. You're only a guest in such an old place, and if you have a historical house you are the caretaker and maintainer in a long list of caretakers and maintainers that came before you and will come after you.

custodians not owners and is a landmark home I would expect so gov't does have more right to expect the home preserved despite what owners want. They can modernize inside or addon but knock down? definitely not. They should be forced to abide by heritage standards or give it up. What happened to all her other homes were they sold I expect. I wish a family member had gotten it and would put a stop to it. If it wasn't a place she had died no one would care but because it is it should be kept. I have written to the Brentwood council and the Whitehouse to protest any appeals for demotion by this couple the new owners.

Speaking as an old fogey who was raised on the cutural influences of old Hollywood, it is sad to think that many of the homes which were once owned by famous actors have now often been co-opted by a rag tag team of shift-less grifters, talentless money grubbers, vapid talent agents,, hedge fund managers and the like. Just read the biographies of Lucy Arnaz, Marlo Thomas, Nancy Sinatra, and the like, and you'll get a glimpse into the lives of Hollywood royalty. Nowadays, many actors choose to live outside of L.A. because of so many detrimental factors. Of all places, the last residence of Marilyn Monroe should be preserved. It is true enough, that many women who contributed so much to America's entertainment industry, especially in the beginning, were under-valued and often mis-understood. Mariska Hagarity has made many comments about how her Mom, Jayne Mansfield, was so mis-understood and often made fun of. No one seems to be aware of how she was raised in a cultured, multi-lingual house-hold. We make judgments about people whose lives we know very little about. I'm so glad that the City Council stood up to those who are more interested in making a quick buck than they are in preserving cultural history!

I visited the street a few years ago when visiting the US. It's in a nice area but not a glitzy one, at the end of a cul-de-sac. I was surprised that it was so modest for one of the most iconic stars of the 20th Century. I thought that said a lot about Marilyn-it was simple, not at all flash like the 'stars' of today would demand. I also visited her resting place at Westwood Village( yes I admit it-I love Marilyn!) which is a really small cemetery. Marilyn is there along with some of the biggest names in Hollywood. She is in a Crypt that is not immediately noticeable. But when you find it you see that it is covered in kisses on the outside(well it was when I visited), no one else's is. Apparently 90% of people visiting are there to find Marilyn. Astonishing that 60 years after her death she still exercises such a pull on people. I wonder what she would make of it-that all these years later, people seem to love her even more. The more we know about her, the more she pulls at our hearts -she had a terrible upbringing and yet made herself into an icon. She was a fabulous beauty and was a kind heart. R.I.P. Marilyn.

I remember watching a house tour on KZbin a few years ago as I believe it was when the house was for sale. Honestly I think it’s a great home, has better character than most other modern homes, especially most celebrity homes these days. The back yard has a great space too, with a pool view by most rooms in the house, the spacious grass lawn, and the winding paths down the hillside with a lovely view. It maintains a quaint feeling and you’d never think it was over the top, I can see why Marilyn got it. Thankfully it’s considered a historic home and is potentially going to be preserved. There’s some people that I want to throw bricks at for thinking they are above historical significance and can just flat out a perfectly beautiful home that holds meaning to the culture, in this case Hollywood’s glam years.

One place that she lived for a year or two was in a guest house with its own small swimming pool that had privacy from the main house was in Chatsworth, CA. in the West Hills of the San Fernando Valley. The home is a beautiful single story modern home that Frank Sinatra rented for about 10 years in the 1950s and into the '60s. It sits on a hilltop overlooking a Damn and the valley in what would have been farmland or untouched wild bean fields at that time. It would have been very secluded with no other homes for miles around. The house was designed for entertaining with floor to ceiling glass walls that opened to patios with a large pool and beautiful yard with 360° views, large open living room, dining room, bar, and parking for over 200 cars. It's rumored that JFK would frequently spend time at the house staying in the guest house with Marylin having an affair as the rumors have told over the years. The house is used for film and television production quite often and also used for private parties, and weddings. I've worked on a couple of films that shot on location there.

LA has a history of destroying heritage buildings. That’s why Rudolph Valentino’s homes, Pickfair and Marian Davies’ homes no longer exist as well as the famous original Brown Derby restaurant. In the 1950’s a whole hill with historic mansions was leveled. The Garden of Allah no longer exists nor does the famous Schwabb’s Drug Store. Angel Flight has been moved from its original location. Just about everything you might associate with Old Hollywood from the 1920’s to 1960’s is gone and replaced by soulless modern architrcture or even a vacant lot in the case of the Garden of Allah torn down in 1959. Now it’s tents of homeless on the streets. So how do you explain this? What’s next ? Pave over the La Brea Tar Pits for a shopping mall? Hey? Maybe I could sell that idea to the city. In 2150 maybe the original Disneyland will have to go for a trailer park. That is after an army of homeless took it over in 2030. The Hollywood Bowl filled up with condos and Hollywood sign sold for scrap to China. I better write these down and send to that tall building downtown where Jack Webb used to work at as a detective in Dragnet. “ This is the city. Los Angeles, California but you wouldn’t recognize it as all of the historic buildungs you saw in countless old movies are gone. I wotk here. I’m a cop.”(or used to be. While on one hand I do agree that private owners should be able to do what they want with their property, on the other the preservation of this home is paramount. All too often in LA history, people have removed a lot of its iconic buildings under the guise of progress. The Pan Pacific Auditorium torched so the owner could make way for condos after the city didn’t allow him to simply tear the structure down. Unfortunately, the city has lost many iconic homes as well. Lucille Ball’s home on South Roxbury Drive in Beverly Hills being one notable one. The owners who bought this home also knew the history of it when they purchased it. Sorry, but no one alive doesn’t know this significance of the home and should they prevail they will most likely run into issues with neighbors who will no doubt find a way to make them move. Their quasi star status will be forever married to a reputation of ill repute. They will become social piranha and eventually fade into obscurity. Their legal fight like so many these days will set the precedent for others seeking to follow in their footsteps of destroying Los Angeles. It’s sad that some people don’t value history. Clearly the current owners could not care less about Marilyn Monroe and her rich history and contributions to the film industry both on and off the screen. It’s always sad to see money wasted on such people as they don’t use it wisely. Surely there’s other homes adjacent to theirs they could annex that don’t have such historic reference. It’s a shame they are seeking their 15 minutes of fame in this fight rather than finding it using their own talents. Grifters.

I say just take a piece of it like the main lounge area and let people see it in an L.A museum. Before it’s demolished allow people to take a little memento of what ever they want such as some roof tiles or a door, paving stones or a tree cutting. Miss Monroe would want a beautiful new home in place of the old one, I know she would. In honour of her name a tiny stone near the new house gates can be placed there to remember her by. She was a carefree beautiful woman who never made a big fuss about silly things such as houses. Build a lovely big house for her in her memory.

Or it could be a residence belonging to someone who would want to preserve and restore it because tkhey truly appreciate the beloved property and would cherish it. Either way, it should only ever be sold to those who appreciate the historical importance of such a place. Don't buy something unless you are willing to take that into consideration. I doubt that the structure will add anything to Monroe’s legend particularly since she only lived there six months, and with the changes and all of her furniture sold back in 1997. The only thing I see is the morbid fascination for the location of her tragic death. Those of us that grew up watching the transformation of Marilyn from a unknown to a respected actress will be part of us until we all grow old and die ourselves. The other tragedy is she never understood the total enjoyment she gave to movie fans in her movies. Yes she had a beautiful face and body but there was much more to her then that.

I respect the position of the current owners; and the fact that this change could affect their current home. YET, this is where Marilyn died; this was the only home she ever owned. I realize the owners may have rights and could win the battle - which would be respected. But what a terrilby sad thing to lose this place... to wipe it from history. It is heartbreaking.

Most of old Hollywood is gone, no one wants to go on a bus tour of Hollywood homes and see the Kardashians home, ewww. We want to see old Hollywood homes the REAL famous actors, this is bull that Marilyn's home could be demolished, no respect for old Hollywood.

The historical group should purchase it and but it on the tourist list, for people and charge them to go through like a museum..

It is so unbelievably weird to me the owners would want to demolish the building, I’m quite interested to see them defend their wishes as it’s utterly inconceivable to me.

This Home must be Preserved.

Not that any of our comments matter but they should not demolish Marilyn's old home it's sort of an icon and has history. It has meaning and it's marked forever with Ms. Monroe's life & past 😪☹️😭

This is a very dangerous presidence by the government over reaching their authority for their own selfish needs. A presidence that could effect any land owner. It would undermine the rights of one's ownership of land & home. Paying millions to own a property but the government gets to decide whether you really own it or not? Screw that! The government clearly violated the owner's right. The only compromise is to allow a digital artist's company to 3D model the exterior & interior of the home and setup a VR museum. Let the new owners do what they want with their property.
