Bullshit! A burning spaceship is not the place to stay. If FTL were to be discovered, the power requirements necessitate fusion power. Even a fusion reactor when damaged is going to be "hot" with radiation. This ain't a plane crash on Earth. No search and rescue on an unknown planet.

Has anyone ever noticed this about these HFY stories--that either it's one about humans as "holy crap space Hulks" or it's humans as "pathetic wet noodles not worthy of attention if you stepped on them"? And they always either take place in a galactic academy/some sort of military training school OR an alien invasion facing the consequences of invading Earth in some unimaginable way. Or--my personal favorite--the Galactic Council sentencing some human to a deathworld to die, only to watch them treat it like Bear Grylls being on vacation.

HFY writers should really expand their 'humans are resistant to poisons' list. Allium is a whole family of plants (onions, chives, garlic) that are well known to deter insects. Allyl-epropyl-disulfide is the chemical in question, and it's what makes cut onions burn the eye. And we eat it regularly. As seasoning. We enjoy it. Just one of many.

Flattery aside, these stories paint the entire universe as incompetent and weak, more than it props up our species...
@hallowedbeyourdaysАй бұрын
That's part intentional but mostly the problem, I'll agree. It went pretty far beyond belief in short order, even back when HFY was new. In 2010 and before, it seemed like just about everything was anti-human. Or rather, humans were always cast as the default and it seemed as if everything was crafted to be shitting on what was normal. Every alien was humans with hats on, and every accomplishment the human faction in the game achieved was relentlessly mocked in the narration and plot. Then James Cameron's 2012 Avatar released. It looked like everything put up with from the direction of neo-elf LARPers and everyone roleplaying online trying desperately to be anything but human, the first iterations of Humanity, Fuck Yeah congealed on the traditional games board of 4chan. It's meant to be a direct counter, but here we are in the mainstream, where too many people have no idea why this genre exists. If you want a truly good quality HFY story, look up the tale of Drake McDougal. That's a story revering what about is worth revering about the human species.

@@liaml.e.5964 One that isn't specifically sci-fi HFY but so, so very well encapsulates the spirit of the genre is the Ballad of Edgardo. Why do these space alien warriors appear to be like modern school children. They are completely detached from their teacher's lessons.
@TheSpacePyro2 ай бұрын
That is because of a lack of interest for example if you try to play with a cat they either go ballistic and play or they just are not interested and refuse to play. Having a lack of interest is a universal thing in all animals. The reason why it is more apparent in children is that they have a mind a developing brain that is constantly active and trying to absorb information at a rapid pace so they have a hard time focusing on one thing at a time
