I made the previous comment on this video 3 1/2 years ago when i was 14, and i made some incorrect and statements about the clothing 1. My original statement that they should be allowed to wear things like this without any hate or judgement because fashion isn’t a make or break to someone’s personality still stands 2. To correct myself, the dresses are not doll dresses, they’re victorian era inspired dresses and referring to lolita as “living doll” is inaccurate and patronizing.

I have a friend that is into this. She customises her outfits, shops for wigs and attends the tea parties. From what I understand this video is a pretty accurate reflection of the sub culture. It is not sexual and it is about experiencing that "simpler time" and expressing ones self creatively through clothing. The communities are very close knit and supportive of each other. I personally have never wanted to take put in her interest as I find it indulgent and wasteful (all that effort and money put into something that is not essential), but then again I am sure there are people that think the same of some of my hobbies. To each his own. As long as its not hurting anyone then why care what people do in their free time.

I have been into lolita fashion for close to four years now, and I am very happy to see this small documentary, as it is unbiased and beautiful. However, the comments are a bit of a different story. Therefore, I feel obligated to explain a few simple things about the lolita fashion. Though the fashion itself did start in Japan it has its inspiration in Victorian and Rococo young ladies fashion, and has nothing to do with anime, and to call a lolita a weaboo is just simply being uninformed and biased. People who bring anime into lolita fashion are often considered novices, or are just plain insulted by crueler members of the community, and there are several lolitas that do not watch anime, or even have interest in anything that is stereotypically related to Japan. Secondly, lolita has nothing to do with fetishes of any type or pedophilia. The fashion can even be considered a type of cute, innocent rebellion upon people saying that someone can not be beautiful without being sexualized, as it puts great emphasis on modesty and elegance, as it is considered daring to even show a collar bone or your knees, and very taboo to show your thighs or breasts. We are well aware of the connotation of the name, but we can assure it is by pure coincidence. Lolita is an actual girls name that has been tainted by the novel, and it is widely accepted that the name was popularized by Mana, of the now defunct band Malice Mizer, as it was beautiful and feminine. Lolita was built to be a very innocent and elegant fashion, a standard which it holds up today, and though it is not for everyone, it is generally harmless and I much more than what most assume of it.

I think the name lolita is unfortunate lmfaoo. people tend to associate the fashion to the book. the fashion, while sharing the same name, is compleeeetly different to the themes in the book. the community makes it clear that they dont want people who are into the fashion because they confused it for a weird fetish.

James Moriarty trust us there are toned down or tone downable levels to this fashion (casual Lolita), as well as what would be classified as other styles (otome Kei, larme kei, mori girl, boystyle, etc.) with the the same dresses or pieces. Most to get the most out of their wardrobe follow other style influences including 40-50-60s Americana influenced feminine styles Tea party's and themed events is usually the only time, most to/or some, go to the regal over the top levels. But how a person styles them self depends on their personality and the print or non print dress they are wearing... some can't be toned down. They were made that way.

As a 24/7 dress wearer (not lolita; but still), I worry I have to struggle now (and possibly forever) being single having autism and not being able to get out in the world much, worrying that my being so “girly” is somehow a curse to be weak and not have any fight in me….yet when I see videos like this one, about girls wearing frilly dresses and just valuing friendships more than love and being confident in who they are and their strength, it gives me a lot more courage to see I can just be the feminine AND strong woman I want to be :) Tomorrow is going to be a bit of a difficult day for me, possibly, so I am really glad to see a video like this one. It’s not just a video for lolitas this video is in my book; but, anyone who just wants to know you can be both tough AND pretty in this world. Both mean a lot to me. For those in the comments: Lolita isn't even remotely correlated to the concept of being a Living Doll nor is it a fetish. Most Lolita's wouldn't agree with "acting the part" they are simply clothes and we are our own person in and out of the fashion. Lolita fashion is just that; no deeper or hidden meaning. It is is simply a subculture of the Kawaii movement in Japan. edit: while I'm at it, I suppose I can drop a few Informative videos by other lolitas or accurate documentaries about the fashion. Sugar Coated: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jWG0hKysbdl4nck Cuteness, Escapism and Lace Monsters: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKjRnnqlmZWCp68 LOLITAS ARE NOT LIVING DOLLS: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i2eTnYRoj9qJpa8 Whilst these are great sources, most still inaccurately suggest that Lolita by Nabakov is pedophilic and romanticizes child exploitation. I left a comment regarding said topic under the last video source listed above but for those who are less likely to watch, ill leave it here as well. Touching on the Lolita by Nabakov subject, like any other style, the clothing came before the name; while the EGL community and the novel and or theatric depiction of the novel, share the same name, there is no correlation between the two.(and while we have no trouble differentiating the two, the general public always finds a way to twist it otherwise.) Though that is a common misconception for the EGL community, there also seems to be a prevalent misunderstanding about the influential novel. The novel Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov reflects the authors’ direct observations of American culture. (specifically Hollywood) and projects to light, the apparent obsession with the sexualization of youth and the reoccurring theme of child exploitation in and out of the private industry. Many Lolitas who were interviewed often mentioned how the fashion differed from the novel because, “we don’t seduce older men,” and or, “don’t intend to.” This further adds to the harmful stigma that Dolores was actively consenting and aware of the actions forced on her. Dolores Haze was undoubtedly a victim of child abuse and deliberate exploitation. Her character was loosely based on American child stars like Shirley Temple. Whereas Humbert was a representation of the media and culture at the time. Clegg (Christine Clegg attentively examines the critical history of Lolita through a broad range of interpretations.) follows the novel’s non-disclosure of Lolita's feelings as directly linked to the fact that her “real” name is Dolores and only Humbert refers to her as Lolita. Humbert also states he has effectively “solipsized" Lolita early in the novel. Eric Lemay writes: “The human child, the one noticed by non-nymphomaniacs, answers to other names, “Lo”, “Lola”, “Dolly”, and, least alluring of all, “Dolores”. “But in my arms,“ asserts Humbert, "she was always Lolita.” And in his arms or out, “Lolita" was always the creation of Humbert’s craven self … The Siren-like Humbert sings a song of himself, to himself, and titles that self and that song "Lolita”. … To transform Dolores into Lolita, to seal this sad adolescent within his musky self, Humbert must deny her, her humanity.“ I understand that this isn't particularly significant to those keenly interested in the style. However, I find that gaining a more proper understanding, ourselves, of the general misconceptions, aids us in addressing and explaining our fashion and the reflective novel, correctly.

robbysoaks Lolita is worn by mostly adults because “Youngins” can’t afford the fashion as branded dresses are between 200-500 USD. I see that your comment comes from a place of good intent but for a lot of people Lolita is a lifestyle, not a phase since it is primarily all adult women.

I’ve been a lolita for about five or six years now. And I have to say that this is why i joined the fashion. Outside of my family I always felt like an outsider. Through most of my life i was bullied by other girls. Then i found lolita and I wasn’t the odd one out anymore. I then started making JSK and dresses. The dresses were kinda a fail. But it inspired me to keep sewing and designing! Now I’m in college for costume design. This fashion helped changed my life along with my family’s support!

That pisses me off when I hear people tell these women, "You're the reason we have pedophiles." No, pedophiles are the reason we have pedophiles. It's our horrible rape culture of blaming women and men victims for the perpetrator's thoughts and actions. How about we stop shaming these women for doing what they want to feel happy.

Me: Wow what a nice looking docu about lolita, maybe this one will be great. First Girls:: "There is a lifestyle and you have to be polite and proper" Me: Okay nevermind (x's out of the window). Shout out to literally every lolita I know who wears lolita as a fashion and does not change their behavior or pretend to be demure because their clothing isn't cosplay.
@IkkyVlogs7 жыл бұрын
Trudat. I think the "Demure and proper" attitude that newer Lolitas adopt is a misconception. I'd probably hate myself if I couldn't swear or drink while I happen to be wearing a frilly dress - most of the other veteran lolitas I know are the same.
@kokeru7 жыл бұрын
While it is a misconception and most lolitas don't act proper while dressed up all the time, what she said is still true. There IS a way you're SUPPOSED to "act", mostly referencing Misako's forbidden behavior rules (probably some other Japanese models too, misako's the only one coming to mind rn) I imagine. Very few people do it tho, I agree, but in this situation aka a tea party i guess the polite and proper thing still applies.
@IkkyVlogs7 жыл бұрын
But those Misako videos are satire. There are general things she does cover like pulling your petticoat under you so you don't take up like 3 seats which is common sense but overall those videos were supposed to be making fun. Going to a tea party or a nice dinner whether you're Lolita or not should be met with the appropriate manners but it's a misconception to assume that you should curb your personality and act a certain way just because you're dressed up. She mentioned that you should be "Proper" when you're in Lolita in general, not just tea parties which is just not true. Case and point: The Harajuku Angelic Pretty shop girls are regularly seen drinking, smoking and swearing when they knock off work because it's just a fashion.
@kokeru7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I mean the satire comes from somewhere, as well as the misconception. The whole proper shebang kind of fit with the fashion so yeah of course people are going to think and/or expect the cute lolita to act proper, even if it's not true. I don't believe the girl int he video was trying to say that there was a way you HAD to act more that there was kind of that grey cloud of things you we're ~~supposed~~ to do, that's what I was trying to say.

Kyle Pasta And all the hate in the comments is just strange. A few socially awkward women (the few in the vid, not every Lolita girl) found a little dress up/subculture where they can make friends. What's the big deal? Is it the name that's pissing people off?

because it has the word Lolita. the connotations of that word is what gets to people. these people take the word out of it's usual context, but you can't really see that from the title.

Why all the dislikes?! It's just for fun and artistic expression, nothing bad about it... It's not about the japanese culture or anything, yes it's origin is from japan, but what matters is just the style and the fun about dressing and feeling like a princess or just pretty... and not for others but for yourself... and It brings different girls/women together.... 2017 should be more about being kind and understanding to others, not bringing down everything you don't understand... ohwell...

Fat, skinny, white, black, girls, boys... If you think of it, Lolitas only care about looks but no-one seems to care about the other to critizise. No-one is saying "Uhm... Your face is already too round to put a bonnet around it, you should try this or that instead", which is what fashion industry is always telling us to do: "If your body is like this or your complexion like that, you can ONLY wear this or that;" Lolitas don't. Everyone can wear everything. Maybe we should learn a bit about them, at least in that sense. It's fucking 21st century, after all.

There's the second-hand market a lot of lolita keep stuff in impeccable condition, there are the lucky pack sales, and Taobao brands that have some beautiful designs when it comes to the cash mone resources the best thing to do is budget it out. See something you like or have something in ming just put aside a bit each month for it a lot of themes repeat, so if you're looking for things that maybe have a deer theme associated with it mid-summer through fall/ July-nov is when you will see releases like that. getting the most coveted dresses can be stressful AF. Taobao resellers or secondhand sales are groovy. or learning how to use Taobao. Some styles of blouses you can find in thrift stores or other.

While I do love vice and viceland, I personally think that they should've gone into more detail about Lolita fashion. Such as controversy to its name and what the fashion is, maybe an inside look of different types of Lolita like Goth, Sweet, Classic (Doll), the male Lolita, Steampunk, Sailor, Punk, Wa Lolita etc... I know there are a lot of different terms in the Lolita community as well. (ex: Coord = Coordinate. The outfit they put together or Coordinate. Hence coord.) It would've been nice if they even explained some of the Lolita brands and the problem with Replicas... Usually vice does great things to spread awareness and get messages across, this time I feel rather confused. You've shown us a bit of the fashion and the people in it but I feel like what we saw was just a glimpse. Cute video just not vice educational.
