I'm 54 and my wife and I are VERY worried about our future, gas and food prices rising daily. We have had our savings dwindle with the cost of living into the stratosphere, and we are finding it impossible to replace them. We can get by, but can't seem to get ahead. My condolences to anyone retiring in this crisis, 30 years nonstop just for a crooked system to take all you worked for.

No alternative crosstown highways, outdated roads that need expansion and trains that really go nowhere as an alternative . HA! Finally! A Real Estate Professional speaking truthfully on this. We moved out to the Locust area from the Matthews area during the pandemic because the numbers made sense. It put us waaayyy under our budget for the same exact property being sold in Meck County for up to $200K more. We tried to warn our friends, buy they ignored us because they view this area as being "far". I told them it takes us 20 minutes to get to Charlotte, but that fell on deaf ears. Those same people are sitting there looking weird as they try to make a purchase in Meck County for the crazy crazy price. In two years, the population has literally doubled out here because of the price points, and the work commute truthfully is the same 45-50 minutes to center downtown as when I was in Matthews.

We live in a older suburban style subdivision in Charlotte and I am conflicted in that it's convenient (most things we need - groceries, gas, restaurants, shops, entertainment, kids activities, parks, medical, services, etc - are a 10 minutes or less drive away), but walking/biking places is not easy. I also now really dread venturing outside my footprint to other parts of the Charlotte area that interest me because of all the traffic/congestion, construction, people driving CRAZY and all the fees for parking and whatnot. I think the surrounding towns, both inside and outside Mecklenburg, are where it's at as far as being nice places to live at a better price, particularly if you are in the walkable core and can get to amenities easily. I can also appreciate country living with enough space to grow crops and raise some animals, but I am not inclined to living in a rural/exurban subdivision, because I can't work remote and would have to commute longer than I do now and I wouldn't like being far away from amenities. Reading Nextdoor, seems like there's a lot of drama with bad neighbors, bored kids and HOAs in these places as well.

I mean, I’m 27 so maybe that’s why I don’t hate the world seeing that there’s a lot of accommodations for young people, but I’m pretty sure growth is a good thing for any major US city

I’m 53 as well. We live in Jamestown, a suburb of Greensboro. We have 2 adult kids in Charlotte. They both earn more than I do, but can barely afford rent. We have 1 adult kid in Raleigh. He out-earns all of us put together, and is also a home owner. We bought our house for $165k in 2017. We get cash offers on a daily for around $350k as-is. If we did more improvements on our house, $400k would be very achievable. I worry about my 2 kids in CLT being able to afford to purchase homes. We enjoy coming to CLT to hang out with them. If we did decide to sell our home, I would move to York or Fort Mill.

Though I was born in Charlotte and raised in NYC, l lived in Charlotte from 2006-2017. Also, I have a lot of family there. Anyways, in 2011, I rented a two bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment with a patio and swimming pool access and a nearby pond. The rent at the time was $612. In 2017, I had to move out, went back to NYC, to care for my daughter and grandson. Another management took over the property and they were no longer accepting subsidies. Fast forward, they have raised the rent there, which that was their intention. I agree that Charlotte has become way too expensive and congested.

I told a job recruiter that they could not pay me enough to live in Charlotte. I've lived in Winston-Salem my entire life and nothing seems to be able to pry me from this place. I did live in Fayetteville for a year though, due to circumstances, and wouldn't recommend it. My biggest complaint about Charlotte is that it turns into a parking lot every other hour. I love the switch to some guys living room. That was pretty clever! 😅

Good content. I think it’s a matter of preference. I moved here 12 years ago from NY / suburbs. I worked in the city and enjoyed retreating to the suburbs. Not exactly country but doable. If the state legislature would increase the minimum wage to a salary commensurate with inflation, most people would be able to afford a suitable home. I need to be within proximity to good schools, great healthcare and stores. 14 miles outside of the center of Charlotte is good for me.

What u said about present day Charlotte is true in that the growth has brought in tons of people, major development, higher home prices and rents BUT there are suburban areas such as Matthews and Huntersville that are hidden gems located close to Charlotte. Decent 3-4BR homes in these towns will cost in the upper $400ks and up. In order to get something similar in the $300s one has to go further away from Charlotte as u mention. What used to cost $300k in 2020 in the Charlotte area /suburbs now will cost VERY close to $600k and MORE. Crazy but it is what it is>>>the good old days of 2020/pre pandemic with lower home prices coupled with ROCK BOTTOM INTEREST RATES are gone FOREVER. The train has left the station.

Born in Fort Mill SC Went HS in FM Moved out, went to college in Charlotte (CPCC/ a bit UNCC) Prime years were there, I didn't miss FM as a young adult, loved the city and still more or less do. Steady girlfriend, now I live in Rock Hill SC. I lived everywhere in Charlotte, from Derita to 5 minutes away from North Lake Mall. Rode the bus from 2009-2017 or 18, worked many jobs from front end developer in south charlotte to Tech Support at CPCC. My parents moved from Charlotte to FM because of the schools, while I understand that now a few things from a race perspective (granted, this is 2002-2008 for me) affected me a good bit being in FM all those years, they graduated from JCSU so safe to say I have alot of roots here in Charlotte. Taking down the Epic Center and multiple clubs/bars around the city makes this city....weird for active folk. I am not that, but I have friends that are. While apartments/homes might be being built here, I'm not sure what there will be to do from an outside perspective as someone that is 21+, then again, that climate has changed being that I'm of the millennial generation vs Gen Z's and Alpha's behind me. The Pandemic also closed down (and to a degree opened) alot of places. Going down say N Davidson or Central Ave Pre Pandemic vs Now is a night and day difference. Being in Rock Hill is...nice in the way of it feels like a smaller version of Fort Mill but it still feels local, but I for sure miss public transit, and I actually can't stand driving. I never really drove in charlotte unless I had to and ofc couldn't stand it either there (independence is asking for trouble) From the Influencer standpoint however, and anyone trying to do anything online as a career, something to think about is the online infrastructure of the place you're moving to. Some places for example still don't have fiber and the further you go away from the city; you might even only have dsl as your only option. If you're going to York County specifically look up what Internet Service Providers offer you. Comporium pretty much has most of York and I think spectrum is slowly getting into the SC side of things. True Vista is the one that is mainly dsl. You want to be careful of that if you go further out of Charlotte. The Micro Center is going to bring alot more people wanting better internet and a closer lane of getting computer / smart home essentials, which potentially means more social media influencers which isn't necessarily a bad thing for local economy. I honestly miss Charlotte all things considering, but alot of it was the convivence of the transportation / people I've met. I like Rock Hill, but wouldn't be opposed to finding something maybe a little further out personally.

Yeah…Charlotte is cool for a visit, but too slow for me. I went out there for a work conference & it was clean, it just reminded me of a bland version of Atlanta except smaller. It’s a little overhyped to me. Too far from the beach & too far from the mountains…so I’m willing to pay extra to live on the West Coast to have it both ways. I don’t mind saying hi to people but if I’m in the grocery you got messed up if you think I’m having a full blown small talk discussion with you. Having neighbors not far from you is a part of community. If I have to trek to ask my neighbor a question that’s unnecessary. As a former Southerner turned Westcoaster, I never understood the fascination of living in rural nowhere in a big house with nothing but birds chirping & bugs hissing with Walmart as your closest form of entertainment. Give me a city with traffic, public transit, culture, & energy nearby any day over creepy suburbia any day of the week. Just my 2 cents.
