"Rigorous history" can mean a lot of things, depending on the context. Maybe they've overcome some challenges. I am sure you missed the part where he says that finding someone you connect with and who shares your values is important. Would you want someone with a past? Absolutely! Everyone has a history, and it can shape who they are today.
